The Heat is On in the Stranger Things Summer Special

This summer, Dark Horse Comics presents the Stranger Things Summer Special One-Shot! Written by Keith Champagne, illustrated by Caio Filipe, colored by Dan Jackson, and lettered by Nate Piekos, the Stranger Things Summer Special arrives just in time for the summer premiere of Stranger Things 4, and features covers by Diego Galindo and Heather Vaughn! Volume I of Stranger Things 4 premieres on Netflix May 27, 2022 followed by Volume II July 1, 2022.

Officers Powell and Callahan patrol the “mean” streets of Hawkins Indiana with the enthusiasm of two hefty dachshunds pretending to be bloodhounds. Typically, they don’t have to chase down more than the occasional petty theft and teenagers smoking reefer but lately the town has been getting weirder, and while they might not get to the bottom of it, they just might be lucky enough to survive it.

Stranger Things Summer Special One-Shot will be in comic shops July 6, 2022.

Apex Legends Expands to Comics with Overtime

Writer Jesse Stern is joined by artist Neil Edwards, inker Keith Champagne, and letterer Nate Piekos for the new comic series from the award-winning battle royale videogame Apex Legends in Apex Legends: Overtime beginning June 2, 2021.

Apex Legends is a squad-based battle royale experience where players select from one of 16 Legends – each with their own unique abilities and playstyles – and the last team standing wins. In the comic series, the Legends find themselves pulled together to rescue the city from Mad Scientists, brutal assassins, and the sudden and sinister grip of The Syndicate, a corrupt cabal attempting to “fix” arena outcomes in their favor. Will the Legends hold up to their celebrity status and be the heroes Solace needs?

Apex Legends: Overtime #1 (of four) arrives June 2, 2021, and is available for pre-order.

The Inkwell Awards Announces Artists For the Ivan Reis Spotlight Challenge

The non-profit Inkwell Awards, devoted to promoting the art of comic book inking, has released the list of 24 artists participating in its fifth annual Sinnott Inking Challenge Spotlight. According to founder/director Bob Almond, the Spotlight Challenge, which grew out of its more inclusive, original Joe Sinnott Inking Challenge, showcases other contemporary, fan-favorite talents on a more limited scale with veteran published inkers who may or may not have participated in other challenges. The previous four pencilers were Jim Lee, Neal Adams, Erik Larsen, and David Finch.

The Challenge Spotlight furthers the inking advocacy’s dual mission of promoting the artform and educating the public. Blue-lined art files featuring a tightly penciled Ivan Reis Justice League pinup are sent to the artists to finish in ink. Each inked page will be signed by Reis and the inker, and include a certificate of authenticity signed and numbered by Almond. All pages will then be auctioned off at a later date as a fundraiser. Fans will be able to see the difference in the penciled and inked versions to better understand how much inkers contribute to the artform.

Review: Frank N. Stein Private Eye

Frank N. Stein Private Eye

One of my favorite genre mashups is Who Framed Roger Rabbit? It’s a movie that still holds up despite its age. The movie revolved around a washed-up detective who now works as a private eye, played luminously by the late great Bob Hoskins. As a major figure of the cartoon town that borders the town where he works passes away, a cartoon idol, Roger Rabbit, gets framed for his murder.

The movie took everything everyone loved about the Crime Noir genre and mashed it up with the all ages cartoon feature. Essentially, taking the flair of Robert Towne’s Chinatown and the subversive humor of Monsters Inc. Frank N. Stein, Private Eye is another genre mashup in the spirit of that iconic film, but this time with monsters.

We are taken to Monstertown, where Frank N. Stein, the local private eye, whose ex-wife has been a nightmare at the very least to him, as she has been more than unfaithful when they were married. In “Alife in The Night,”, we the dissolution of his marriage and how his line of work can be dangerous for all the reasons no one can see. In “A Strange Visitor,” an alien toddler crash lands into Monstertown, where a human helps take custody. In “A Red-Hot Mess,” Little Red Riding Hood hires Frank to find out who chopped up her grandmother, only to find out who killed her, was not the person everyone thought it was in the first place. In “Riverdale Jumpstreet,” we see frank going undercover in Archie’s Riverdale, where he finds out that Reggie has been behind all the hijinks happening Archie’s friends. In the last story, we get “The Sailor Man,” where Frank finds a nasty love triangle between Popeye, Olive Oil and Pluto.

Overall, the comic is a fun if not cheeky set of stories that aims to both honor and poke fun at all these classic storybook legends. The stories by Keith Champagne are funny and engaging. The art by Dev Madan is diverse and vivid. Altogether, a great collection of stories that will entertain readers and remind them of how amusing mashups can be.
