Review: Skyward: Into the Woods Vol. 1

unnamed(1)This weeks see the release of the first trade paperback collection of the runaway smash hit Skyward! You now have no excuse as to why you aren’t reading this series. This trade paperback collects the first three issues as well as the Free Comic Book Day story that started it all.

It all begins here, as young Quinn and his dog Jack face off against a threat more terrible and a world more fantastic than they ever imagined!

These first issues sets up a fantasy world that’s perfect for both kids and adults alike. The story is still being set up, but these issues follow Quinn and his dog and their journey as well as the search to find them. Exactly what this is all about is only hinted at, ready to excite and entertain us as the series continues.

Jeremy Dale does double duty on the series acting as both the writer and artist and doesn’t miss a beat with either. With each issue, the series only gets stronger, a great sign overall. The more I read, the more I was hooked. While some things might be predictable in the first issue, as the second and third roll around that all gets chucked out the window and it all becomes a very fun ride.

If you’re a fan of fantasy or looking for a good introduction to it for younger readers, this is an excellent way to spend your hard-earned dollars and support solid indie comic work at the same time.

Review: The Final Plague #2, Princeless: Tales of Family Ashe, Princeless: Tales of Girls Who Rock, Skyward #2

The Final Plague #2

final-plague-2-artThe Final Plague continues! A mutated rabies virus continues to spread across the planet, infecting, killing, and re-animating animals both great and small. Can mankind survive? And what will happen when the first humans are infected? Will they fall, only to rise again?

I’m not the biggest fan of horror movies. It’s taken me a long time to get into them, and it wasn’t until I was well into my 20s before I really got to enjoy them. Good horror can freak me the fuck out. The Final Plague is good horror.

I don’t know what it is, the story, the art, the combination of the two, something really clicks with this series as I find myself squirming as I read through each of the issues. Maybe it’s because it’s rats involved? Possibly because it’s realistic?

Whatever it is, it works. It works really well since I find myself struggling to make it through reading the issue without freaking out. A great story elicits emotion and this does just that.

The fact that I struggled to make it through, like a good horror tale, shows that it’s a solid comic and the fact it’s done that two issues in a row makes it great. This is easily one of Action Lab: Danger Zone’s best comics and one of the best horror comics on the market right now.

Princeless: Tales of Family Ashe

Princeless-tales-of-the-family-Ashe-coverWhile Adrienne is having the adventure of her lifetime, her family is getting pulled into the fray! Learn what happens to the ethereal Angelica in the aftermath of Adrienne’s rescue attempt! Shudder to learn what horrible fate has befallen Adrienne’s next sister, Angoisse!

And learn the rest of the tale of the young King Ashe, ensnared in the trap of the fiendish elves.

Serving as an epilogue to the second volume, this one-shot covers some of what happens after Angelica’s rescue as well as serves up what I can only assume is the next sister we get to meet Angoisse.

Like the main series, there’s some amazing writing here and great humor that can be enjoyed by both adults and kids.

The fact is, Princeless is one of the few series that features strong female leads, that are relatable, and on top of that minorities. It’s a comic you can be proud to hand off to people to show what comics can be.

This one-shot is a must for fans of the series and those wanting to find out about events after the end of the second volume. For the rest, you need to do yourself a favor and start from the first volume to read what is one of the best comic series on the market.

Princeless: Tales of Girls Who Rock

Princless-tales-of-girls-who-rockPrincess Adrienne is on the loose again, and this time she brought some friends! While Adrienne may be the first runaway princess, she’s certainly not the only girl who rocks! Come join Adrienne, Bedelia, Sparky, Tempest, and some brand new friends in Princeless: Tales of Girls Who Rock, a one-shot sure to introduce you to your next comics obsession!

They can’t all be winners and for a series that’s been as solid as this, there eventually had to be one issue that didn’t quite work. This one-shot that expands the Princeless universe a bit is entertaining, but as far as stories and flow, something was off for me and didn’t quite click.

What’s amazing is the series has been so good, comparing this one-shot to the rest is almost unfair, but even to the normal comics off, this one didn’t quite speak to me as I expected.

Thinking about what didn’t quite work, I don’t think it’s Whitley’s writing which is entertaining. I can’t say it’s the art, which is good as well. Neither are quite as strong as past issues or one-shots, but they’re all still good. I think the plots themselves didn’t quite seem as enjoyable as past releases.

There’s nothing bad about this at all, and as an addition to the overall Princeless universe and volume it’s nice to see the world expanded a bit. But, the stories at this point don’t seem to add a whole lot for me, which I guess caught me off guard. There’s a lot of potential here though and I’d love to see more of a world formed.

If you’re looking for a place to start with Princeless, this isn’t it, but it is a nice step in a great direction that I’m hoping for more of.

Skyward #2

02skyward00-_cover-p_300_colorsThe chase is on as an unlikely group of villagers race to catch up to Quinn, who is on the run from the assassin Slog-Riders. Yikes!

Reading the first issue of Skyward, I did wonder one thing, where was the kick-ass female lead. With a proper introduction of Abigail, here we go and more evidence that Action Lab is a publisher that gives a crap about diversity.

Gone is the predictable plot points from the first issue, instead we get very relatable characters (there’s that word again) that draw you further into the fantastical world creator Jeremy Dale has come up with.

And in that relatable department is Abigail, a strong female character who is there for more than to just look at. She has a strong personality and great abilities when it comes to fighting and tracking. She’s every bit as capable and more-so than some of the other male characters. The fact is, she’s a strong female protagonist, something that’s awesome to see.

The issue has great pacing and quickly leads back into and follows up from the events of the first issue. Dale has put together a fantasy series that’s fun and easy to get into for long time fantasy fans and new readers. It’s also fun for old and young alike. A solid series that I hope finds the following it deserves.

Review: Double Jumpers TPB, Ehmm Theory #2, Ghost Town #2, Skyward #1

Ehmm Theory #2

Ehmm-Theory-2-coverI went into the series thinking we were looking at a horror/comedy comic series, and by the end of this issue, I’m totally confused as to what genre I’m reading, but that only makes me want to read more. Gabriel and Mr. Whispers discover the true connection they share with the mysterious Alyona. One step closer to Gabe’s father, the three encounter the top-secret super-team know only as G.O.D.D. and fight for their lives against a cybernetic crab. What? Yes. Craborg is coming!?

Did you read the above? Did you see how that all got twisted around? This flagship title for Action Lab’s Danger Zone imprint definitely kept me on my toes for this second issue. That’s good and bad. It’s good in that it kept me interested in a series that I might not have normally dug (the straight horror/comedy). The bad is that it all comes off as a bit schizophrenic. Almost as if the comic was trying to be everyone for everyone. I’m fully expecting the third issue to be all romance.

With all that being said, I found the comic unique enough to keep me interested. It definitely isn’t like anything else out there, especially when it comes to what genre it’s supposed to be.

And that really comes down to taste. While I found the hopping around interesting, some items seemed to come out of left field in an almost zany sort of way. It was all a bit disjointed because of that. But, I do like the characters and the dialogue and a lot of the ideas. The comic though is almost like it’s trying to be too much for too many people.

I think when this first volume is done, it’ll all be a bit clearer, but for now, the shift from the first to second issue was a bit too much for me. I think this might be a better read once it’s all collected eventually. Not for me, but it might be for others.

Ghost Town #2

ghost-town-2-coverThe unthinkable has happened. In the wake of the terrorist’s time displaced attacks on Baltimore and Las Vegas, Washington DC has been evacuated. With the government uprooted, the abandoned Capital has become a refuge for bandits, smugglers, hardened criminals and those who have chosen to stay behind.

The concept of Ghost Town is amazing and I was wondering how it’d shift from that first fantastic issue to the second. That first issue was all set-up and now we get the fallout. The series has gone from a macro story to a micro one focused on a few characters at the local level.

And it’s cool. There’s a lot of potential here in this next story arc. It’s a complete break from that first issue. I expected more of the fallout of the police/FBI/military/etc dealing with the actions of the first issue, instead it’s a simple story of people trying to survive in this new world and how those actions changed it.

That’s a cool direction and not an expected one. It’s a tale where we’re able to relate to the characters more instead of being driven by the events as much. And the characters are great. The way they’re living, what they’re doing and how they’re dealing is engaging and interesting. While the situation they’re in is over the top, they are not, nor is the day to day dealings and discussions in the world they inhabit.

This second issue isn’t what I was expecting, but it’s a cool direction and now I can’t wait for what comes next.

Double Jumpers Vol. 1 TPB

double jumpers #1 coverThe cult hit of 2012 is finally collected! After Jason and his team of programmers get stuck in virtual reality game, Dungeon Lords, they must find a way back to the real world. Unbeknownst to them, the fantasy characters they inhabit have taken control of their bodies… and now wizards and warriors run free in Las Vegas!

I’m a fan of video games, so when I first found out about this 9-bit of fun, I had high expectations. Then there’s also the fact that when I think of Action Labs I think of some great comics for all ages and very “girl friendly.” Then I got to read the first issue and boy was I off in what I was expecting.

Instead of some deft commentary on gaming and its community instead we got a series that played directly into the juvenile stereotypes you’d expect. This was more dick and fart jokes than anything else. That’s not a bad thing and I went with it for a while.

And there’s a lot I thought was funny. The story and its plot, how it played out, that was solid. It was some of the jokes that fell flat for me. The biggest is the idea of a female character being stuck in a male character’s body and vice versa. Most of it was easy jokes and some of it a bit tasteless, but that’s my personal opinion. Others might find it funny, but there’s so much of it, for me, it drew me out from really enjoying the rest.

When it comes down to it, this one is very much a personal taste thing. It might be different for you, but this wasn’t really for me.

Skyward #1

Skyward-1-Cover-671x1024The fantastic storybook adventure begins! The new creator-owned series from Jeremy Dale follows the thrilling tale of Quinn, left orphaned by an invasion of his homeland. He and other lost villagers run headfirst into a conflict and world that is much bigger and fantastic than they could possibly imagine.

I read the Free Comic Book Day offering for Skyward and it intrigued me. I liked this new fantasy world, one that was all-ages and accessible to new readers of the genre.

I’ll throw the bad right out there. Some of the actions that set Quinn upon is journey are predictable. And some of them hit very overused tropes as well. That’s the worse thing about the comic and even then, the story those tropes and overused plot devices begin is exciting.

The action is present and just comes at you and takes you along for the ride. The pacing is great and story just moves along with a great flow. Quinn too is a character I like so far. While his situation has been seen many times before, there’s something about him that makes me want to cheer for him. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but he’s a likeable character.

Dale pulls double duty on the issue with his art style fitting perfectly for the story. He’s showing off with this first issue why he’s a creator to keep our eye on in the long run.

If you’re a fan of fantasy or looking for a good introduction to it for younger readers, this is an excellent way to spend your hard earned dollars and support solid indie comic work at the same time.
