Terrorwar #1 is Ghostbusters with nightmares

Terrorwar #1

Terrorwar #1 kicks off a sci-fi horror series about working people fighting mind-bending monsters. Blue City was the last livable place on Earth. Now it’s crawling with Terrors-creatures that transform into their victims’ worst fears. Humanity’s last hope? Muhammad Cho and his overworked, underpaid crew of freelance Terrorfighters.

Written by Saladin Ahmed, Terrorwar #1 is an interesting start of a series that feels like Ghostbusters but with nightmares instead of ghosts. Much like that iconic series, this one features what feels like a blue collar crew who are trying to make a dollar while eliminating threats. It’s the detail and the world itself that makes this debut feel like more than just a reskin.

Set in the future, the series has a look and style that feels like it’s been thought out. The visuals blend The Fifth Element and Blade Runner to deliver a worn down city where the tech feels both futuristic and a bit janky. The end result makes the debut feel like Ahmed is playing as much game master as storyteller with a focus on small details that enrich the series as a whole. A quick description of a weapon or a simple conversation adds so much to what could easily have been an action focused series.

The art by Dave Acosta helps with this. With ink by Jay Leisten, color by Walter Pereyra, and lettering by Shawn Lee, the comic is packed with tons of detail. Every bit of it adds to the world and story help telling what this world is like. What also stands out is the Terror-creatures themselves. The first had me pause and laugh as it felt so out of place while the second evokes a classic character. Both help make the tone of the series bounce around a bit and keeps readers on their toes. Much like Ghostbusters, it adds a bit of humor and levity to the series and situation.

Terrorwar #1 is a great start with an overall concept that might feel familiar but the end result is a well worn world due to the detail and thought put into it all. It’s an entertaining debut that has us wondering what terrors lie in the next issue and wanting to find out.

Review: Timeless #1

Timeless #1

It’s the end of the year and last week of new comic releases and that means Marvel is releasing their one-shot teasing out what we can expect in the next year. Timeless #1 revolves around Kang the Conqueror who is becoming square and center of the Marvel Universe in what’s to come.

Jed MacKay handles the teases as Kang is out to prove that he’s a greater villain than Doctor Doom. He’s recruited a sidekick who will eventually write a pro-Doom book that becomes a hit. Kang wants him to bear witness to see how wrong he is when it comes to that. It’s a trip through time as we get to witness ourselves as to what makes Kang so great but more importantly, what makes Kang tick. But, there’s a threat in a “pirate timeline” that threatens existence as it attempts to survive its destruction.

Timeless #1 is an interesting issue that stands on its own as a one-shot to teach us who Kang is. As a character study, the issue is great and provides an interesting take on the character. This isn’t just a villain looking to conquer different time periods or just cause chaos. There’s some motivation and an underling pinning of a reason behind the actions. We’re given teases that what motivates Kang might actually work out for humanity and protect it in some ways. There’s an interesting depth here.

The comic is also about teases which are kept to a surprising minimum. Many of these past comics have felt like a series of short vignettes creating a choppy reading experience and a read that feels like a lot of prologues mashed together. Here, it feels like narrative has come first continuing Marvel’s focus on its villain of the year(s). The fact this rising profile coincides with a higher profile in the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t lost on me but if it’s a good read, that doesn’t really matter. And, this is a solid read.

Timeless #1 features quite a few artists, Kev Walker, Greg Land, Jay Leisten, Mark Bagley, and Andrew Hennessy. Despite the five different artists, the art does feel consistent and is really solid to watch. This doesn’t have a feel that a certain artist took one particular time period and that’s it, there’s an actual flow in visuals that the different creators isn’t as noticeable and definitely doesn’t feel out of place which can happen. Marte Gracia provides the colors with Ariana Maher on lettering. What’s interesting about the art is that while it looks good, there’s also a missing visual moment with long impact. There isn’t that iconic panel or spread that’ll stick throughout the year. But, the art looks really good.

Timeless #1 is a solid read that focuses more on one character than teasing out what’s to come. There’s only about 3 pages total that does that and some of the teases we generally have answers to. But, it’s that end page that’ll have readers in the know lingering and excited for what’s to come. In an age of leaks and spoilers it’s a reveal that has been kept impressively quiet. It also teases what might be one of the biggest shakeups to come to Marvel in quite a while.

THE ORIGIN OF KANG!
The man called Kang the Conqueror has been a pharaoh, a villain, a warlord of the space ways and even, on rare occasions, a hero. Across all timelines, one fact seemed absolute: Time means nothing to Kang the Conqueror.
But the truth is more complex. Kang is caught in an endless cycle of creation and destruction dictated by time and previously unseen by any but the Conqueror himself. A cycle that could finally explain the enigma that is Kang. And a cycle that begins and ends with an old and broken Kang sending his younger self down a dark path…

Fables Returns with Fables #151 and Batman vs. Bigby! A Wolf in Gotham

Once upon a time, fans met the characters of Fabletown, the hidden city populated by legendary heroes and villains of fairy tales and folklore. Now, in celebration of its upcoming 20th anniversary, the bestselling series Fables is picking up where it left off—and expanding into the DC Universe. To celebrate 20 years, two new releases featuring the Fables world has been announced.

First, on sale in September, Batman vs. Bigby! A Wolf in Gotham sees Fables’s infamous sleuth Bigby Wolf go head-to-head with the world’s greatest detective, Batman, in this six-issue spinoff miniseries from DC Black Label. Written by Bill Willingham with pencils by Brian Level, inks by Jay Leisten, and colors by Lee Loughridge, this crossover detective story will delight fans of both Batman and Fables—or fans who just love a good noir mystery.

Then, on sale the first week of May 2022, the main story line continues with Fables #151—just in time for the 20th anniversary of Fables #1. Fables #151 is the first installment of “The Black Forest,” a 12-issue arc that picks up where the story left off in Fables #150, and is also a perfect jumping-on point for new readers. The series also reunites the core creative team, with pencils by Mark Buckingham, inks by Steve Leialoha, colors by Lee Loughridge, and letters by Todd Klein.

Bill Willingham’s return to DC will also include Cursemas, a 48-page standalone holiday special featuring the Justice League.

The Inkwell Awards Announces Artists For the Ivan Reis Spotlight Challenge

The non-profit Inkwell Awards, devoted to promoting the art of comic book inking, has released the list of 24 artists participating in its fifth annual Sinnott Inking Challenge Spotlight. This year’s Challenge features artist Ivan Reis‘ take on DC’s iconic super-team The Justice League from the cover art to DC‘s Man of Steel (2018) as originally inked by Ivan‘s partner Joe Prado. The artwork will be auctioned afterward for fundraising.

The artists (in alphabetical order) are:

  • Gerry Acerno

According to founder/director Bob Almond, the Spotlight Challenge, which grew out of its more inclusive, original Joe Sinnott Inking Challenge, showcases other contemporary, fan-favorite talents on a more limited scale with veteran published inkers who may or may not have participated in other challenges. The previous four pencilers were Jim Lee, Neal Adams, Erik Larsen, and David Finch.

The Challenge Spotlight furthers the inking advocacy’s dual mission of promoting the artform and educating the public. Blue-lined art files featuring a tightly penciled Ivan Reis Justice League pinup are sent to the artists to finish in ink. Each inked page will be signed by Reis and the inker, and include a certificate of authenticity signed and numbered by Almond. All pages will then be auctioned off at a later date as a fundraiser. Fans will be able to see the difference in the penciled and inked versions to better understand how much inkers contribute to the artform.
