AWA Studios announces Black Tape bringing together horror, heavy metal, and 1960s Los Angeles

Rock’n’Roll will never die, but it often kills a few folks along the way. AWA Studios has announced Black Tape, an all-new original mystery comic series that tells the fictional story of a miscreant and rock idol named Jack King, who drops dead under mysterious circumstances in the middle of a sold-out show. Penned by award-winning comic creator Dan Panosian and illustrated by acclaimed international artist Dalibor Talajić, Black Tape highlights the best of horror, heavy metal, and 1960s Los Angeles all while attempting to uncover what really happened to the rock’n’roll legend.

Mick Jagger claimed the swagger, Paul McCartney & John Lennon wrote the best tunes, and Robert Plant wailed like no other — but all those singers served as frontmen in a rock ensemble act. Only Jack King put it all together with his own name as the brand that would carry him to stardom. So when Jack dies suddenly at the height of his musical reign and his cause of death comes with neither rhyme nor reason, subsequent events paint a picture of a singing superstar caught in a web of lies, addiction, and even the unholy powers of the occult. What really happened to Jack King and the legendary, never-released final album called “Black Tape” that King produced shortly before his death? Will his widow Cindy be able to protect his legacy as she mourns her loss? With the intersection of music, Hollywood, the 60s, counterculture, Satanic Panic, detective stories, and the supernatural, Black Tape unravels the mystery behind the lost album, Jack King’s death, and who had the most to gain by making sure the iconic rocker never performed again.

In Black Tape, Jack King was a rock’n’roll god who projected a stage persona on par with the devil. After Jack dies on stage, his widow, Cindy, grapples with grief and struggles to protect his legacy, unaware that she is being surrounded by dark forces that covet the master tapes to Jack’s final, unreleased album – a heavy metal masterpiece that just might open a doorway to hell. Throughout the four issues, the series is full of mood and tension that builds to big plot twists and supernatural action set pieces.

Black Tape is written by Dan Panosian, illustrated by Dalibor Talajić, colored by Ive Svorcina, and lettered by Steve Wands. Black Tape #1 will be available February 1, 2023, both digitally and in stores wherever comic books are sold, with the following four issues available on a monthly basis.

Review: King Thor #1

King Thor #1

Jason Aaron and Esad Ribić again team up to wrap up their tale of Thor that began seven years ago. King Thor #1 wraps the epic tale that began in Thor: God of Thunder. The results are both good and bad due to that.

Taking place in the future, King Thor #1 focuses on Thor, the All-Father of a broken realm and dying universe. The Necrosword has returned and is now in the hands of his brother Loki who’s intent on killing him and the rest of existence. Thor’s daughters are on a mission to stop all of this and prevent the end of existence.

It’s a story that feels like years in the making and the first issue’s ending brings the circle around in so many ways. That’s a big payoff for those who have been reading but also a difficult hurdle for those who haven’t. King Thor #1 is a great read but the comic’s also not new reader friendly. But, it’s a tale that’s worth going back and catching up on what you’ve missed.

Aaron infuses the first issue with a melancholy feel about it all. There’s a morose and depressing feel about it all as if it’s the finality of one who knows their time is up. And that’s part of the point. This is the tale told by those who celebrate a final stand while drinking but also in remembrance.

The art by Ribić is beautiful as expected. Joined by Ive Svorcina on color and Joe Sabino on lettering, the art captures the mood of the comic and allows us to linger on the experience. There aren’t close of panels of shock moments. Instead, we take in all of what we witness as if the audience in a play whose final act we’re witnessing.

King Thor #1 is a comic I can recommend for those who’ve been following this story from the beginning. For new readers, the issue might be a bit over your head, especially the end. If you want to take part, you’ll need to do some research along the way. The issue feels like the beginning of the end. One last chapter to add to the book that began seven years ago.

AfterShock Comics Announces A Walk Through Hell From Garth Ennis and Goran Sudžuka

AfterShock Comics has announced a new series, A Walk Through Hell from Garth Ennis with art from Goran Sudžuka, out in May. It’s the publisher’s third series with Ennis!

So these two FBI agents walk into a warehouse…

Special Agents Shaw and McGregor handle the routine cases nowadays, which is just the way Shaw likes it. She’s pushing 40, a borderline burnout, the ghastly memories of her last investigation still clinging like shadows. McGregor is younger, more dedicated, hanging onto some measure of idealism whatever the world might throw at him.

When two fellow agents go missing inside a Long Beach warehouse, Shaw and McGregor are sent to investigate. But what they find waiting is far from routine, as the local police have already discovered to their cost. Before the night is out, our heroes will encounter terror beyond their most appalling nightmares—in a place where the night may never end at all.

A new kind of horror story for modern America is written by Ennis with art by Sudžuka, colors by Ive Svorcina, and letters by Ron Steen. The first issue features a cover by Andy Clarke and Jose Villarrubia as well as a solid black variant.
