The Denny’s Thing Burger, Not Exactly Kosher

thing-burger_thumb-mDenny‘s is running a tie-in with the upcoming Fantastic Four film and features various dishes with a “theme” pertaining to the character it ties in to. As a whole I’d shrug my shoulders, but the one for The Thing is actually interesting. I’ll ignore the 1920 calories, 1180 of them from fat, the high amount of fat, cholesterol, and sodium. You might be a superhero to survive eating it.

For those that might not know, Benjamin Grimm aka The Thing, is one of the more prominent Jewish characters in the Marvel universe. While he’s not regularly at synagogue in the comics, he has said Jewish prayers in comics and mentioned his religion every so often.

Back to the hamburger. It includes the burger, cheddar cheese, bacon, and a cheddar bun, among other things (special “thing” sauce). Pick up on the issue here? Not only does the hamburger include bacon (some Jews don’t eat pork, I do), but it also mixes milk and meat (unless Denny’s is admitting their cheese is anything but). This violate Kosher law which prevents the mixing of the two. In other words, this is a meal a lot of Jews probably wouldn’t eat.

The Thing might not keep kosher, stats vary as to how many Jews do (anywhere from 15% to 40%), it definitely is a bit insensitive to his history and background. Definitely a hand. head. slap. moment.

Japanese Illustrator Offers His Own Penis as a Meal

File this under “what the fuck.”  In April, Japanese illustrator Mao Sugiyama decided to offer up a very special meal, his own penis, testicles and scrotum.  Yes, that’s right, the illustrator’s surgically removed genitals.  Five diners (the sixth didn’t show) paid the equivalent of $250 for the ability to partake while 70 people attended and observed.

The 22 year old Sugiyama considers himself asexual and doesn’t identify as he or she.  I licensed chef helped the illustrator prepare the meal which was served with Italian parsley and garnished with button mushrooms.

Cannibalism is not illegal in Japan but health officials are investigating the event to see if any food hygiene laws were broken.  The sponsor of the event has said none were.

I could make a joke that I’m shocked it could feed the six intended people, but I’ll hold back.  Though, with all of the latest news of zombie attacks and cannibalism, I can’t say I’m shocked about this story at all.

CalorieLab has numerous more photos of the event including the meal.  It’s very NSFW to warn you.

Fantagraphics, Elysian & Charles Burns Serve Up 12 Beers Of The Apocalypse

Official Press Release

FANTAGRAPHICS, ELYSIAN & CHARLES BURNS SERVE UP
12 BEERS OF THE APOCALYPSE

DECEMBER 14, 2011 – SEATTLE, WA. In a year-long wind-up to the end of all time (according to the Mayan calendar), Elysian Brewing Company and Fantagraphics Books, both of Seattle, are planning a series of twelve beers, issued on the 21st of each month in 2012 and featuring label artwork by Charles Burns. Taken from Burns’s weirdly apocalyptic work Black Hole, the labels will adorn Elysian’s “Twelve Beers of the Apocalypse,” featuring the creativity and unusual ingredients for which its brewing team is known. What twelve beers would you brew (and drink) if you knew they would be your last?

First up in January is NIBIRU, named for the mysterious planet X supposedly on a collision course toward Earth. The Elysian / Fantagraphics Nibiru will be a Belgian-style Tripel, flavored with an infusion of yerba maté. Combining the tasty esters of Belgian yeast and the compelling tea-like flavors of the South American herb mixture, the beer will weigh in at around 7.6% alcohol by volume (ABV). A mixture of German Northern Brewer, Czech Saaz and American Amarillo hops round out the uniqueness of the first beer of the Apocalypse. Oddly enough there’s another apocalyptic-themed Nibiru out there: a super volcano currently burbling most dangerously beneath Yellowstone National Park. It too is scheduled to end life as we know it very very soon.

February 21 will usher in RAPTURE, an ale of opulent proportions flavored with heather tips. Unlike the various Rapture events predicted by pseudoscientists and alarmist evangelicals, the beer will be very real and frankly delicious, combining the floral fragrance and slight bite of high country heather with Northwest Glacier hops in another 7% ABV beer. FALLOUT follows in March, right around the time of the vernal equinox. Fallout will be a pale ale made with green cardamom.

As Earth’s last year unfolds, other beers will appear as if by dangerous magic. Persimmons, chilies, raisins, blood oranges, rosemary and other herbs will be integrated into ales, lagers and Belgian styles using the finest local and imported ingredients. These limited brews will be available in bottles and draft and at select bars and bottle shops. We will celebrate as they are released – on the 21st of every month in 2012 – with events at one or the other of Elysian’s three Seattle pubs and at Fantagraphics headquarters in the Georgetown neighborhood. Once they’re gone, these beers will never be brewed again. Then again, come December 21, that will be the least of our worries.

REMEMBER: THE END IS BEER.
