Gay Manga Finds a New Home at Fantagraphics Books

Fantagraphics Books is thrilled to welcome the team behind The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame to the family. Massive: Gay Erotic Manga and the Men Who Make It is due out October 2014. This is the most recent entry in Fantagraphics’ queer comics lineup, which also features the anthology No Straight Lines, the graphic novels 7 Miles a Second and Bread & Wine, and manga by Moto Hagio and Shimura Takako.

The Massive anthology showcases Japan’s most talented and influential gay manga artists, including Gengoroh Tagame, Jiraiya, Seizoh Ebisubashi, Kazuhide Ichikawa, Gai Mizuki, Takeshi Matsu, Fumi Miyabi, and Kumada Poohsuke. In Massive, many of these artists’ works are featured in English for the first time; this collection offers an intimate, in-depth look at a criminally overlooked component of Japanese queer culture. In addition to comics and illustrations, Massive features photographs of the artists and their workspaces; cultural and historical context; and interviews with the creators about what it’s like to be a gay erotic artist in Japan.

Edited by Anne Ishii and Graham Kolbeins, and designed by Chip Kidd, this unprecedented survey of manga “made by gay men for gay men” is an essential addition to the queer comics canon; it will introduce the genre often referred to as “bara” (a misnomer for gay manga that has taken on new meanings online) to a new, international audience.

Massive was originally scheduled as a PictureBox Spring 2014 release until its publisher, Dan Nadel, announced that he is ceasing operations.

SPX 2013: Surprise Guests Adrian Tomine and Anders Nilsen

Small Press Expo has announced Adrian Tomine and Anders Nilsen as surprise guests to SPX 2013, to be held September 14 and 15. Adrian and Anders will be in addition to previously announced guests Seth, Jeff Smith, Raina Telgemeier, Lisa Hanawalt, Gary Panter, Liza Donnelly, Gene Yang, Congressman John Lewis, Rutu Modan, Peter Bagge, Ed Piskor, Dash Shaw, Liniers, Domitille Collardey, Frank Santoro, Farel Dalrymple and Michael Kupperman.

Making his second appearance in as many years, Adrian Tomine will be on hand to sign his latest release Optic Nerve 13. In June, Adrian was a guest of Michelle Obama at the White House for a reception honoring a cross-section of American artists, writers and historians.

Anders Nilsen will be at SPX debuting his latest book, Rage of Poseidon from Drawn & Quarterly, as well as signing his latest from Fantagraphics, The End, an expanded hardcover edition of his work published as part of the Ignatz Series with Coconino Press. As with last year’s, Don’t Go Where I Can’t Follow, The End deals with the death of Nilsen’s fiance.

The Small Press Expo is a fantastic convention just outside of Washington, DC that spotlights independent creators and publishers, they hold the Ignatz Award festival which recognizes outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning, with the winners chosen by attendees at the show.

Profits from the SPX go to support the SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program, which funds graphic novel purchases for public and academic libraries, as well as the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, which protects the First Amendment rights of comic book readers and professionals.

SPX also supports the Small Press Expo Collection at the Library of Congress, which preserves the history of both the artistic output of the creators who come to SPX, as well as the art that SPX itself generates as part of its yearly festival. It the first program of its type by a major institution in the United States to preserve the works of the indie comics community.

Fantagraphics Books To Publish Simon Hanselmann’s Megahex

Simon HanselmannFantagraphics has announced the acquisition of the first book by acclaimed Australian cartoonist Simon Hanselmann, to be released in the summer of 2014. Megahex will be a deluxe hardcover featuring over 200 pages of Hanselmann’s beloved Megg, Mogg, and Owl comics, including over 70 never before seen pages. Hanselmann’s Tumblr site Girl Mountain has already propelled Megg, Mogg, Owl & Co. to Internet infamy, and Megahex will be the solid collection those fans have long been waiting for.

Megg (a green-skinned witch), Mogg (a black cat), and Owl (an anthropomorphic owl) are a trio of ne’er-do-well roommates cohabiting in a suburban flophouse. Megg and Mogg spend most of their time smoking pot and having sex, while Owl works various office jobs and usually comes home to find himself as the butt of every joke. Behind the crass poop jokes and stoner humor are the depressed and misanthropic lives of these characters. They all possess tragedies that weigh on their shoulders, keeping them from escaping the nihilistic pit into which they’ve fallen. Equally funny and melancholic, Hanselmann is able to evoke empathy for his characters, making it easy for readers to fall in love with this disdainful bunch. Part Tennessee Williams, part Peter Bagge, Megahex will make people laugh, cry, and then take a shower.

Ivan, who is plagued by terrible nightmares about chickens and rabbits, is a good dog — if only someone would notice. Readers accompany the stray as he navigates dog society, weathers pack politics, and surveys canine-human interactions.

Good Dog‘s story and pen-and-ink art are deceptively simple, but Chaffee uses the approachability of the subject matter as a device to explore topics such as independence, security, assimilation, loyalty, and violence. Preteen-and-up dog fanciers, especially, will warm to the well-meaning Ivan and his exploits with a motley assortment of Scotties, Bulldogs, and mutts. Chaffee combines illustrative gravitas with cartooning verve and creates a richly textured, dog’s-eye view of the world. The Adventures of Jodelle – Everything Sexy About the 1960s Preview

Originally published to thunderous acclaim in France in 1966 and then throughout Europe and in the U.S., The Adventures of Jodelle was an instant classic, whose influence would spread far beyond the confines of comics. It also triggered Guy Peellaert’s “Pop Period,” a creative whirlwind marked by his 1967 creation of PRAVDA, an unforgettable character that has since been acknowledged as a major component of the European Pop movement.

Completely remastered and featuring a new translation, this long-awaited reprinting of The Adventures of Jodelle is accompanied by an 80-page lushly-illustrated textual supplement which traces the creative path traveled by the artist. Peellaert multiplied his chosen means of expression, skipping from comics to cinema and moving through fashion, periodicals, and television, including collaborations with many of the great figures of mythical 1960s-era Paris, from Serge Gainsbourg to Yves Saint Laurent.

Every page of this fascinating saga features a flood of topical references and in-jokes, operating playfully on the border that separated so-called “high” and “low” cultures. Fantagraphics to Publish Book of Guantanamo Courtroom Sketches by Janet Hamlin

Sketching Guantanamo coverIn the wake of 9-11, alleged terrorists were housed on a U.S. military base in Guantanamo, Cuba. While there, these terrorist suspects were confined in “indefinite detention,” off the American mainland, unaccountable to the U.S. judicial system, nameless and faceless to the world. At the military trials of Guantanamo, which started in 2006, no photographs were permitted in the courtroom. Only one person was allowed to cover the trials, not with a camera but with her pencils and pastels. Janet Hamlin has been the only sketch artist covering the trials from 2006 to the present, granting the suspects humanity and dignity while allowing the world to see the process through an unapologetic lens.

Sketching Guantanamo

Sketching Guantanamo is both a collection of her most potent and revealing sketches drawn during this period, as well a chronicle of her experience at Guantanamo.

This October, Fantagraphics will be releasing a collection of those courtroom sketches and commentary. This is a piece of history to few know about and anyone with the interest in courtroom proceedings, the rule of law and the United States government should check this out when it hits shelves. Sketching Guantanamo helps bring these proceedings out of the shadows and into the light of public scrutiny these extra-judicial trials.

Before entering the viewing booth at the back of court, Hamlin is subjected to daily thorough searches, wanding, and metal detecting in three separate checkpoints. All a reader needs to do is open the book to be transported to the infamous base. Hamlin’s drawings and accompanying text provide a rare insight into the military courts of Guantanamo; they’ve appeared on ABC News and Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, and were recently featured in The Colbert Report‘s story on censorship of the trials. With nearly 150 drawings, the book will also include photographs of the surrounding facilities to enhance Hamlin’s illustrations and commentary. It also includes a foreward by Robert F. Kennedy Johnson Award winner Carol Rosenberg, a member of a reporting team that won a 2001 Pulitzer Prize.

Fantagraphics continues its line of acclaimed literary manga with new classic Nijigahara Holograph by Inio Asano.
