Review: Disaster, Inc. #1

A story about tourism when we can’t go anywhere is a weird sort of escapism. A story about tourism to disaster areas feels appropriate. Disaster, Inc. #1 kicks off an interesting concept of a series.

At its heart, the story is about a rather shady individual running a tourism company that takes those willing to pay into dangerous zones they’re not supposed to go. In this case, the series begins with Fukushima, Japan which was impacted by a nuclear meltdown after a tidal wave.

But, of course that’s not all there is.

Writer Joe Harris gives us a touch of the supernatural kicking off the issue with two researchers who meet an untimely demise. Why and how? Well, that’s the mystery we’re going to figure out, it’s just the tourists have no idea that’s what lays ahead for them.

Harris also delivers a cast that’s generally unlikeable. Beyond the abused assistant Abby, all the tourists and the two other individuals running the tourism operation all come off as people I want to see catch radiation poisoning. And that makes the series really intriguing. Imagine a slasher horror film where you want to see everyone die. There’s something oddly satisfying in that.

The art by Sebastian Piriz with lettering by Carlos M. Mangual is solid. The characters all have personality oozing from how they’re depicted. What Harris doesn’t hint at for personalities through the dialogue, we get the rest of the story through clothing and body language. There’s also some beautiful moments full of unease oozing with unforeseen dread.

Disaster, Inc. #1 kicks off a really intriguing new series from a solid creative team. The concept feels fresh and different. It also feels rather timely considering all of the chaos we’re surrounded by. It’s a different sort of series delivering a little entertaining horror to the real world.

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Dead Day #1 (AfterShock) – The dead are able to come back for just one night. The idea of this “annual macabre holiday” is really interesting and unique and we want to see where this series goes.

Disaster, Inc. #1 (AfterShock) – A new series from writer Joe Harris and artist Sebastian Piriz takes us on a tour of some of the worst places on earth while digging up trouble. The concept of disaster tourism is a new one for comics and we’re excited to check this one out. – Check out our exclusive preview.

Fun Fun Fun World (Oni Press) – Creator Yehudi Mercado knocks it out of the park with his comics and we expect no less. The Devastorm 5 is an alien warship whose prime directive is to seek out planets to invade and conquer in tribute to the almighty Alien Queen. The only problem is that the crew of the Devastorm 5 is the worst in the fleet. It sounds like a really fun fun fun idea.

King of Nowhere #2 (BOOM! Studios) – Now an honorary citizen of Nowhere, Denis joins one of the locals on a doomed-to-fail money-making scheme at the outskirts of town, while John Doe’s mysterious killer continues to leave bodies in his wake… We’re excited to dive back into this intriguing series.

My Video Game Ate My Homework (DC Comics) – Part of DC’s line of graphic novels for young readers, this is also one of the few that are original properties. Every one of their “kids” graphic novels have been top notch so far and we’d expect nothing less of this one.

Rogue Planet #1 (Oni Press) – A new sci-fi series from writer Cullen Bunn and artist Andy MacDonald about a salvage vessel tracking a planet with no star system to call its own.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #1 (Marvel) – Doctor Aphra is the best addition to the Star Wars universe in quite a while. A mix of Indiana Jones and pure chaos we’re always excited for her adventures. – Read the review of this first issue.

Venom #25 (Marvel) – It’s the end of “Venom Island” but an over-sized issue has us expecting something big for this series which has become really tied into Marvel’s bigger picture.

In Vitro (Humanoids/Life Drawn) – A sweet, funny French graphic memoir by cartoonist William Roy about him and his wife’s quest to have a child via in vitro fertilization. – Read our review

Ludocrats #1 (Image Comics) – Kieron Gillen, Jim Rossignol, Tamra Bonvillain, and Jeff Stokely is a murderer’s row of creators. The series is described as “A collision of the ornate fantasy of Dune and an M-rated Asterix & Obelix! Baron Otto Von Hades and Professor Hades Zero-K are here, and they’re going to save us all have a nice time.” We already have a very positive review. – Read our review

Plunge #3 (DC Comics/DC Black Label/Hill House Comics) – Amazing horror from writer Joe Hill and artist Stuart Immonen. The third issue is beyond creepy.

Star Wars Adventures: Clone Wars #1 (IDW Publishing) – We’ll take more Clone Wars!

Superman Smashes the Klan (DC Comics) – Writer Gene Luen Yang and artist Gurihiru’s amazing series is collected and is beyond amazing. This is “best of the year” material that has Superman fighting the Klan in a story that riffs off of the classic radio serial.

Year Zero #1 (AWA Studios) – AWA has been a publisher to keep an eye on and this zombie series feels a bit weird to read considering the world but we’re still a sucker for the genre.

Digital Releases

DCeased: Hope at World’s End #1 (DC Comics) – DC surprised everyone with this digital-first release. It was unannounced and unexpected. Another zombie genre riff but DCeased so far has been a fantastic take on the genre and we want more.

Youth #2 (comiXology Original) – A new take on the superhero genre with a LGBT spin on it all. The first issue was solid and we want to read more and even more intrigued as it’s being worked on as a show from Amazon Studios.
