Review: DCeased: Hope at World’s End Chapter Two

Wow. Just wow. DCeased: Hope at World’s End Chapter Two is a phenomenal issue that is full of tough choices and tragedy. The digital series shifts its focus on to Kahndaq and how Black Adam is dealing with the infection in his country. As a dictator, his action is swift, fierce, and tragic in many ways.

This digital series tells the story of some of what happened as the Anti-Life Equation sweeped the world creating a mass of destructive zombies. While heroes did what they could to save individuals, others took different routes and this is one of those tales.

Writer Tom Taylor delivers brutal action as Black Adam takes action not only shutting down a main path of transmission but also swiftly dealing with those infected and those that might be infected. It’s the actions of a dictator totally focused on logic and devoid of heart. Taylor delivers that aspect of heart as some of the world’s heroes plead with Black Adam to take in refugees and together they can help protect what’s left of humanity.

Taylor uses that to explore Black Adam’s actions and allows him to reflect upon his decision. In just a few pages we get to see a person reflect on their decisions and the impact. We see Black Adam question turning away help. It’s an interesting read as we not only reflect on the inept response to the spread of COVID-19 but also the brutal action being taken by elected officials and the police attacking protestors. It’s hard to not compare the entertainment and the reality.

The art by Renato Guedes is amazing. With color by Rex Lokus and lettering by Saida Temofonte, the art nails the tone of every scene. From the opening action, to a tense confrontation with other heroes, the art really captures the moment adding excitement, tension, and eventually sadness. The colors pop and lettering really captures the tone of each conversation and statement. This is a comic whose art, dialogue, and story is perfectly in sync.

DCeased: Hope at World’s End Chapter Two is an amazing second chapter that takes you on an emotional roller coaster. It’s beyond fantastic and a hit me out of left field. While some might be predictable, it doesn’t lessen the impact. This is an issue you can pick up and read on its own. It’ll suck you in and have you wanting more of this quality.

DC Releases the Surprise DC Digital First Series DCeased: Hope at World’s End

DCeased, 2019’s blockbuster series, makes its DC Digital First debut with new original stories set before the fall of Earth! Fan-favorite Injustice: Gods Among Us writer Tom Taylor’s epic DCeased storyline continues with DCeased: Hope at World’s End with art by Dustin Nguyen, Renato Guedes, Carmine Di Giandomenico, and Marco Failla! Set in the span of DCeased #5’s time jump, DCeased: Hope at World’s End will expand the story of the Anti-Life War, featuring Superman and Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Stephanie Brown, Wally West, Jimmy Olsen, and more.

This new DC Digital First series, in addition to DCeased and DCeased: Unkillables, will pave the way to the launch of DCeased’s sequel, DCeased: Dead Planet, in June 2020.

In DCeased: Hope at World’s End, the Anti-Life Equation has infected over a billion people on Earth. Heroes and villains have fallen. In the immediate aftermath of the destruction of Metropolis, Superman and Wonder Woman spearhead an effort to stem the tide of infection, preserve and protect survivors, and plan for what’s next. In the Earth’s darkest hour heroes will bring hope! The war for Earth has only just begun!

DCeased: Hope at World’s End, written by Tom Taylor with art by Dustin Nguyen, Renato Guedes, Carmine Di Giandomenico and Marco Failla, will publish digitally twice a month through its fourteen-chapter run. Cover art will be by Ben Oliver, Francesco Mattina, and Yasmine Putri.

Review: DCeased: Hope at World’s End Chapter 1

DCeased: Hope at World’s End is a surprise DC Digital First series. It takes place within the DCeased storyline (specifically within DCeased #5’s time jump). Its story will be told through fourteen chapters twice a month chronicling the fall of Earth. DCeased: Hope at World’s End Chapter 1 is a somber comic about the end and the heroes who tried to stop it. And with what’s going on in the real world, it feels rather odd.

This debut chapter is told from the perspective of Jimmy Olsen. He attempts to register what has happened with the spread of the Anti-Life Equation and the fall of the planet. From his perspective we see survives, the change, and watches the heroes do what they can. It’s hard to read this and not think of the news as a disease we can’t see stalks us all. It’s hard to read this and not think about the real-world heroes who are attempting to save us. And, it’s hard to read this and not think about the zombie-like masses who think nothing of themselves and attempt to drag society down with them.

It’s a case of bad timing for the series. It’s unknown when writer Tom Taylor began writing it but there’s an odd extreme reflection of what we see on the news or around us every day. The difference is, it’s clear that technology is the villain and you can see the infection here while the opposite holds true for both in our reality.

Taylor captures a somber tone. We witness the fall from Jimmy’s perspective and get a sense of what his mission is. It feels like running into battle knowing you won’t come out of it alive.

That sober reality is delivered beautifully by Dustin Nguyen‘s art with colors by Rex Lokus and lettering by Saida Temofonte. The team gives us an emotional roller coaster. They deliver the horror spreading and the reality of so many lives lost without going over the top. The faces of each character tells as much of the story as Taylor’s words. There’s also a solid use of not showing us much of the horror. Instead, our minds can fill in the gaps delivering the panic and fear of the story.

DCeased: Hope at World’s End Chapter 1 isn’t bad at all. It’s actually quite good. But, the timing of the release and some of what’s written echoes reality a bit too closely. It’s hard to take Superman as a serious hero when we have them front and center today. The escapism is marked by a dose of truth.

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Disaster, Inc. #1 (AfterShock) – A new series from writer Joe Harris and artist Sebastian Piriz takes us on a tour of some of the worst places on earth while digging up trouble. The concept of disaster tourism is a new one for comics and we’re excited to check this one out. – Check out our exclusive preview.

The Goon #10 (Albatross Funnybooks) – Consistently one of the funniest and fun comics out there. It’s a spooky take on Popeye that’s beyond entertaining and a must for us each month.

In Vitro (Humanoids/Life Drawn) – A sweet, funny French graphic memoir by cartoonist William Roy about him and his wife’s quest to have a child via in vitro fertilization. – Read our review

Ludocrats #1 (Image Comics) – Kieron Gillen, Jim Rossignol, Tamra Bonvillain, and Jeff Stokely is a murderer’s row of creators. The series is described as “A collision of the ornate fantasy of Dune and an M-rated Asterix & Obelix! Baron Otto Von Hades and Professor Hades Zero-K are here, and they’re going to save us all have a nice time.” We already have a very positive review. – Read our review

Plunge #3 (DC Comics/DC Black Label/Hill House Comics) – Amazing horror from writer Joe Hill and artist Stuart Immonen. The third issue is beyond creepy.

Star Wars Adventures: Clone Wars #1 (IDW Publishing) – We’ll take more Clone Wars!

Superman Smashes the Klan (DC Comics) – Writer Gene Luen Yang and artist Gurihiru’s amazing series is collected and is beyond amazing. This is “best of the year” material that has Superman fighting the Klan in a story that riffs off of the classic radio serial.

Year Zero #1 (AWA Studios) – AWA has been a publisher to keep an eye on and this zombie series feels a bit weird to read considering the world but we’re still a sucker for the genre.

Digital Releases

DCeased: Hope at World’s End #1 (DC Comics) – DC surprised everyone with this digital-first release. It was unannounced and unexpected. Another zombie genre riff but DCeased so far has been a fantastic take on the genre and we want more.

Youth #2 (comiXology Original) – A new take on the superhero genre with a LGBT spin on it all. The first issue was solid and we want to read more and even more intrigued as it’s being worked on as a show from Amazon Studios.
