One World Under Doom #1 kicks off the next big storyline with an intriguing start

One World Under Doom #1

Six months ago, Doctor Victor Von Doom became Sorcerer Supreme – then disappeared behind Latveria’s closed borders. For most, there’s enough going on in the world that Doom’s absence is not a priority, and some time without him feels like a blessing. Only a few recognize it for what it truly was…the calm before the storm. It is a storm that has now arrived. One World Under Doom #1 is the official start to Marvel’s new status quo that shows us a world under the rule of Doom, one where the leaders are going along with it.

Planned for quite some time, Marvel has once again tapped into the zeitgeist with a storyline that feels like it has some underlying exploration of the world we currently face. A villain has taken over and while they promise a lot, can they deliver, and what will we give in return?

What’s interesting with One World Under Doom #1 is we see the complicated nature of Doom. The man is driven by jealousy of Reed Richards, he’s a villain in many ways, but he’s also a statesman, the leader of the nation of Latveria, one who is adept in both science and magic. It’s the statesman part that’s intriguing. We’ve been told the people of Latveria live a relatively good life but one under possible fear and tyranny, and definite instability with Doom as the leader. And, the vision that Doom delivers to the world is a complicated one. There is now universal healthcare. There is now universal education. In theory, these are good things. Doom has outlawed war. He crushes Hydra and twists them to help build schools and hospitals. He just wants loyalty and fealty. In theory, he’s bringing peace and stability. There’s just the question of the cost to it all. Is it all worth a dictatorship? What’s the fine print.

Writer Ryan North doesn’t answer those questions but instead focuses on the shock of what has happened. Earth’s heroes aren’t sure what to do. Earth’s villains are in the same boat. The people too are surprised at this new reality. What Doom has done might be good? Should the heroes oppose it? How can they? And what else does Doom have up his sleeve to counter the heroes eventual attack?

R.B. Silva‘s art captures the shock of it all quite well. There’s an ominous feel and cloud that feels like it overhangs the issue. The rather bewildered and unsure nature of what’s going on pervades every aspect. The comic looks solid overall with some minor quibbles on certain characters and moments. The color by David Curiel adds to the rather odd nature of what’s going on and lettering by Travis Lanham really hits the moments well.

One World Under Doom #1 nails the complicated nature of what I think is one of the best villains out there and teases a story that might explore the current dilemma the world faces, demagogues promising the world in exchange for our fealty. There’s massive potential in this series which is a concept we’ve seen before but one that’s never been more relevant than today.

The Fantastic Four are no match for Doom’s new power in One World Under Doom #2!

This past summer in Blood Hunt, Doctor Doom seized the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme—but that was just the beginning! Doom’s ambition knows no limit, and starting this February, Marvel’s most iconic supervillain uses his new power to take over the world in “One World Under Doom“!

Impacting the status quo of the entire Marvel Universe in exciting tie-in issues, One World Under Doom will be anchored by a nine-issue event series written by Ryan North and drawn by R.B. Silva with colors by David Curiel. The series takes readers behind the mask as they bear witness to the triumphs and trials of Doom’s rule, as well as Earth’s heroes’ foolish attempts to topple it. Fans can peek ahead at One World Under Doom #2, on sale March 19, where the Fantastic Four will confront their archenemy—with disastrous consequences. Proving no match of Doom’s augmented magic, it’s a brutal defeat that will redefine Marvel’s First Family for the foreseeable future…

Doctor Doom has taken over the world, and Earth’s mightiest heroes have failed twice: first to stop him, and now to overthrow him. But the Fantastic Four know Doom better than anyone, which makes them ideally suited to take on Earth’s new Emperor…except for the fact that he knows THEM just as well. As Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, and Sue and Johnny Storm prepare to face down Doom at the United Nations, Doom pays a secret visit to speak to the only person on Earth who holds both his favor, his respect…and his love. But can Valeria Richards change her uncle’s mind? And if she fails, what will stop Doom from visiting a shocking fate on the Fantastic Four that not even he can undo? And, as the Avengers reel from their losses, the course of the Marvel Universe will change – and Marvel’s First Family won’t be the same!

Doctor Doom’s rule begins in One World Under Doom #1

Since Blood Hunt concluded with Doctor Doom seizing the power of Sorcerer Supreme for himself, the Marvel Universe has waited with bated breath for the iconic supervillain’s next move. This February, the wait is over as Doctor Doom takes control of the entire world in a status quo-shattering event, ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM!

Teased throughout the year, “One World Under Doom” was formally announced last month at New York Comic Con. Fans learned that the event will be anchored by a core One World Under Doom series launching in February. This nine-issue event series will written by Ryan North, whose run on Fantastic Four will be heavily impacted by One World Under Doom, drawn by R.B. Silva, and colors by David Curiel. While Doom’s bold reach for power brings change to the entire Marvel Universe, One World Under Doom takes readers behind the mask as they bear witness to the triumphs and trials of Doom’s rule, as well as the foolish attempts to topple it.

Check out all-new variant covers for One World Under Doom #1, including pieces by superstar artists like John Tyler Christopher, Nick Bradshaw, Rod Reis, Will Sliney, Rose Besch, Mike Mignola, and R.B. Silva. Plus, never-before-seen interior artwork shows the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and more of Earth’s heroes assemble as they prepare their first strike against the world’s new ultimate authority.

ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM!

Six months ago, Doctor Victor Von Doom became Sorcerer Supreme – then disappeared behind Latveria’s closed borders. For most, there’s enough going on in the world that Doom’s absence is not a priority, and some time without him feels like a blessing. Only a few recognize it for what it truly was… the calm before the storm. It is a storm that has now arrived. The world has woken up to a new reality: Doctor Doom, Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme, has magically taken over every broadcast medium on the planet and declared himself Emperor of the World – the ruler of a new United Latveria! And shockingly, impossibly, all of Earth’s leaders seem to be going along with this. Luckily, whether it’s mind control or Doombots, whatever’s affecting them hasn’t affected Earth’s heroes – and so they quickly form a strike team to stop Doom’s machinations. But will they succeed? And what happens when some begin to welcome their new Emperor with open arms, clamoring for One World Under Doom?

“One World Under Doom” is an overarching status quo shift coming to Marvel Comics, the likes of which haven’t been seen since 2008’s Dark Reign. It’s a shocking and upending turn of events that will impact Marvel’s entire line of comics and see the launch of tie-in series and one-shots, collectively forming an era worthy of comic books’ greatest supervillain! Check out the new covers and artwork and stay tuned more ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM news later this week!

Black Widow: Venomous is a training montage that leads into Venom War

Black Widow: Venomous

Natasha Romanoff, the infamous spy known as the Black Widow, didn’t go looking to bond with an alien symbiote. But a good spy works with all the tools available to her, and when one of the most powerful and versatile weapons in the universe lands in your lap…you take it. Now she just needs to figure out how to work with a weapon with its own drives and desires. Redefining Widow’s relationship with her symbiote. Black Widow: Venomous is an interesting one-shot, setting the stage for her appearance in Venom War!

I’ll admit, I haven’t been paying too much attention to Black Widow lately nor Venom, so Natasha Romanoff bonding with a symbiote is something that’s new to me. I know it happened, but can’t think of any comic I’ve read that has featured this new take on the classic character(s). So, I wanted to check it out as I plan on seeing what “Venom War” is about.

Written by Erica Schultz, Black Widow: Venomous features Black Widow attempting to infiltrate an Alchemax facility that’s experimenting on symbiotes. What’s interesting is this isn’t the classic bond I was expecting, Black Widow but now with the tools of a symbiote at her disposal. Instead, this “venom” is more independent, coming off more like a sidekick than a super-suit. It definitely caught me off guard in a good way.

Things go wrong and Natasha decides she needs to train her new companion. Red Room training. From there, it’s Natasha diving into her memories and taking her new friend through some rough training so it can react as she does and become as every bit as deadly and experienced as Black Widow.

The art by Luciano Vecchio is solid. With color by David Curiel and Rachelle Rosenberg and lettering by Ariana Maher, the comic looks cool. The training montage is visually striking with fantastic use of color. The symbiote’s use of spiders in its attacks and to aid Natasha will leave those with a fear of arachnids with an unease. The panel layouts play to the action well and overall, Schultz and Vecchio are a great team for this character.

Black Widow: Venomous delivers a different dynamic for Black Widow, giving her a partner and sidekick who she has to train. It’s a situation she’s been in, but not quite like this. In the comics I’ve read, Natasha has dealt with less experienced killers and Widows, here she has someone completely green and new in so many ways. But, it’s a powerful fighter who brings tools of its own to the fight, so the combo creates a lot of potential. Overall, an interesting one-shot that leads into “Venom War,” and intrigued me enough to want to check out more.
