Astroneer: Countdown Blasts Off in a comic series in Spring 2023

Titan Comics has announced Astroneer: Countdown, an original graphic novel series based on the hit video game universe of indie developer System Era Softworks’ Astroneer, launching in March 2023.

Astroneer (PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch) is a multi-platform sandbox adventure game that encourages ingenuity and teamwork. As Astroneers, players are tasked with surviving in an uncharted solar system through exploration and crafting. With luminous visuals, deep lore, and a lot of heart, Titan Comics is excited to look further into the Astroneer universe.

The graphic novel adventure follows friendly Astroneer Seven as he ventures into the Boreas System. What begins as an epic quest to gather crucial resources turns into a crisis of identity and belonging. Will the discovery of the mysterious time-and-space-bending crystals rescue Seven from his troubles, or will they only cause more chaos? Readers will also enjoy three short stories as part of Astroneer: Countdown: “Out of Bounds,” “Decaf Noir,” and “Have We Met.” Each takes part in the wider Astroneer universe and captures the wonder that the game is known for.

Astroneer: Countdown is helmed by a multi-award-winning creative team. The stories are written by Dave Dwonch, David Pepose, Jeremy Lawson, and M. Goodwin; with Xenia Pamfil, Eryk Donovan, Jeremy Lawson, and M. Goodwin on art.

Astroneer: Countdown Volume 1 hits stores and digital devices in March 2023 and is available for preorder on Amazon and Forbidden Planet.

Jennifer’s Body meets Stand by Me in Banshees from Scout Comics

Emily Edwards is beginning her college freshman year away from her family; a welcome change given the summer she has had. Her best friend Beth had committed suicide the summer before, and she has been secretly haunted by her memories for months. Moving away from her past seems like the best way to start anew. The future looks brighter once she meets her roommate, Abbey, and the two become fast friends. Abbey is everything that Emily needs in her life; Abbey is energetic, playful, sarcastic, and the duo are seemingly aligned in their outlooks on life. They even have the same major: Psychology.

Abbey jokes with Emily about the rumors that their dormitory is haunted… and the weirdness begins. Late one night, Emily is terrorized by the ghosts of three girls, sending her on a quest to find the truth. She dives deeply into the school’s past and discovers the hushed history of The Lion– a serial killer who took the lives of at least three female students from 1987 to 1991 before seemingly vanishing without a trace. Her investigations do not go unnoticed, drawing the killer out of “retirement.” Now, Emily must convince the ghosts of The Lion’s victims to bring him to justice– lest his killing spree continues!

Jenny Zero Returns in Homeland Insecurities

Review: Jenny Zero #1

Jenny Zero is the story of super-uber-bad-ass-Kaiji-killin’ Jenny Zero. She has a seriously shitty attitude and personality and drinks and drugs like most people breathe. She doesn’t want to live up to the legacy of a father who set her on this path. However, she’s got a job to do and a really weird gun for killing kaiju. As the city is attacked, she mistakes the situation for a killshot and makes it even worse, for her and those around her.

Jenny Zero certainly has a cool premise but the biggest detraction for me was the main character. I felt Jenny was pretty much unlikeable. Jenny just comes off a bit too angry for me. Writers Dave Dwonch and Brockton McKinney do a lot to set up Jennys’ world and some truly exceptional work in building up the supporting cast. The dialogue felt fresh and Jenny is certainly put through a lot in this first issue. Ultimately, there’s not much redeemable about Jenny in the first issue to help me see past her as something other than someone who is on a downward spiral of drugs and family issues.

I could go back and forth about the art by Magenta King. At times, I did feel it wasn’t consistent and then there are times I would look at a page and just love it. It happens. I do feel that Megan Huang’s color work over King’s pencils really took the art to a level that I did enjoy. There is certainly something appealing about Magenta’s style. And while it isn’t built on high detail, the panels are full of art. The dance club pages, I thought, really showed some good attention to background detail that didn’t take shortcuts.

I’m not big on Jenny Zero #1. I really wanted to like it because what’s not to like about some bad-ass gal and her bad-ass gun just gunning down big critters? Sadly, I think the first issue (possibly) doesn’t do the main character much justice and just traps her as another edgy loose cannon with a chip on her shoulder the size of the world. That said, there’s definitely a character secret that reveals itself at the end that’s got me interested in what’s to come.
