Kickstarter Spotlight: Cryptozoic Entertainment’s HEX MMO Trading Card Game

Cryptozoic Entertainment has turned to Kickstarter to raise money for their trading card MMO game HEX: Shards of Fate. The game has been a well hidden secret for two years and the first ever real Massive Multriplayer Online Trading Card Game (say that five times fast). The first bits of the game was seeded in Cryptozoic’s World of Warcraft Trading Card Game.

With all the social interaction and roleplaying you would expect from a fully featured MMORPG, along with the deep strategic and collectible game play of a TCG, HEX is a completely new gaming experience. We’re designing full card sets, dungeons, storyline, community tools, advanced AI, and so much more. This is a massive undertaking and that’s why we’re asking for your help to bring HEX to life.

Check out this how to play video.

The Kickstarter page has all the details and Cryptozoic admits video game development isn’t easy, but the company is a solid one.

Best Pledge: $20 – You get a couple of starter decks as well as some exclusive cards. I don’t quite know how the game will play out, but this seems like a decent start to get you going.

Risk: MEDIUM – I think the game might slip on the delivery date, but it will be delivered.

Gen Con 2012 – Review – DC Comics Deck-Building Game

Out in late September or early October, game company Cryptozoic attempt to work their magic with a deck-building game based on DC Comics’ universe of characters. The game is imaginatively titled, DC Comics Deck-Building Game. I’ve played a few deck-building games in the past. The idea is pretty simple, there’s a finite set of cards and through some mechanism you gain cards in your deck competing for cards against other players.

The game was fun, but I can’t say I’m too impressed, yet. I played the game as Superman, as each player takes on one of the DC titans like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Cyborg and more. Each character provides different abilities and interact with some cards in different ways.

The good is, the game is pretty simple. I didn’t have a huge background in this type of game and was able to pick it up and come up with some complicated moves in a matter of minutes. The art is also pretty good, following the DCnU style of comics. There’s also some good themes of how cards work together. There’s clearly cards with certain characters in mind and how each character works makes sense, Flash works on speed and speed based cards. It all works well.

The bad is, the game, like the comics they’re based off of, are paper thin. It feels like a game-light with decent mechanics, but not the meat you’re really looking for in a game. I know there’s combos and you can play card off of card with great effect, but in my demo, I didn’t see any of that. I could of stopped paying attention and the results would have been the same. It’s very much, grab the right cards for yourself and that’s about it. There was little in my game where you’d either work against or with your opponents.

So, I’m a bit unconvinced in the game. It could have been the cards we were dealt or the random people I played against, but the game was very vanilla to me without the fun interaction I want or expect in my games.

Art: The art is pretty good. It’s lifted straight from DC comics, so you know what to expect. There doesn’t seem to be special art made for this, some I know I’ve seen before. For the die hard comic fans, there doesn’t seem to be art unique to the set, but I could be wrong. Score: 7

Mechanics: The game is decent, but there’s something off for me. I could not pay attention and I feel like the game would have played out the same. There was talk of combinations as far as cards, I just didn’t see it. Score: 6

Product: The cards were nice in my hand and the game is $40 for about 214 cards. That’s about 5 cents a card. I’m not sure I’d pay that loose. I’d almost buy this game if it were $30 or less, but $40 makes me hesitate for what you get. Score: 5

Overall: The game was good and with some expansions it might be great, but as were it stands I wouldn’t personally buy it. Maybe, if I got to really look at the cards, I might see more of the depth that was mentioned, but from my one game, the play was pretty weak and mindless for me. I don’t think it’s quite to my taste, but might be good for kids just getting into deck-building games. Overall score: 6

Publisher: Cryptozoic

Art: 7 Mechanics: 6 Product: 5 Overall: 6 Recommendation: Play

Gen Con 2012 – Cryptozoic Entertainment Announces New Abstract Strategy Game

Cryptozoic Announces New Abstract Strategy Game, MOD XAt Gen Con 2012, Cryptozoic Entertainment announced MOD X, an exciting new abstract strategy game that will test any player’s tactical thinking skills. Cryptozoic’s latest original property will treat players to a fun and tricky game of strategy and survival in which they must outsmart other players to win. This challenging game will offer hours of endless fun and is perfect for ages 15 and up.

MOD X features a unique game board on which players create patterns to gain points and outmaneuver others. In this game, each player uses fifteen colored game pieces to create X-shape, plus sign, or five-in-a-row patterns on the board, and eighteen score markers to mark points from the patterns they make. The first player to earn the established number of points, depending on the number of players, will win the game!

MOD X players have the challenging task of stopping each other from creating patterns while trying to build their own to rack up points. Score markers indicate where patterns have been made, but they can be lost to competitors who build new patterns over them. The game ends when one player reaches the established number of points, or when a player runs out of pieces.

MOD X will be available in hobby stores in December 2012 and is perfect for two to four players.
