Mark Isham to Score Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger

The upcoming series Cloak and Dagger, which will air on Freeform, is based on the Marvel Comic characters of the same name. The series follows the story of two teenagers from very different backgrounds who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love.

It has been announced that Oscar and Grammy winner Mark Isham will score the series. Isham has created critically acclaimed scores for over 100 films, including Crash, 42, Nell, and A River Runs Through It, for which he received a Best Original Score Oscar nomination.

In 2013, Isham was recognized with the Distinguished Film Composer Award at the inaugural Middleburg Film Festival along with a concert by the Shenandoah Conservatory Symphony Orchestra of his memorable scores. His self-titled album, Mark Isham, earned him a Grammy Award. Mark Isham’s accolades also include an Emmy award, a Golden Globe nomination and the Henry Mancini award for Career Achievement from ASCAP. Isham currently scores John Ridley’s critically acclaimed event series American Crime and the Emmy-nominated series Once Upon a Time, both for ABC. Isham’s recent films include the Ben Affleck action drama The Accountant and the upcoming film projects include Christopher Jenkins’ Duck Duck Goose, an adaptation of Lauren Kate’s #1 New York Times bestseller Fallen and Megan Leavy.

Freeform and Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger Gets a Trailer

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is the story of Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) – two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers which are mysteriously linked to one another. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.

The network has ordered 10 one-hour episodes slated to debut early 2018. “Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” stars Olivia Holt, Aubrey Joseph, Andrea Roth, Gloria Reuben, Miles Mussenden, Carl Lundstedt, James Saito and J.D. Evermore. The series is co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios. Joe Pokaski (“Underground,” “Heroes”) serves as showrunner and executive producer; Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s The Punisher,” “Marvel’s The Defenders”), Marvel’s head of Television, and Jim Chory (“Marvel’s The Punisher,” “Marvel’s The Defenders”) also serve as executive producers. Gina Prince-Bythewood (“Love & Basketball”) directed the first episode.

Cloak and Dagger Coming to TV Courtesy of Freeform (aka ABC Family)

cloak and daggerVariety has reported that a new set of Marvel heroes are coming to the live action screen courtesy of Freeform, the channel formerly known as ABC Family. Cloak and Dagger will be the next characters to receive the live action treatment.

Cloak, aka Tyrone Johnson, and Dagger, aka Tandy Bowen, were created by Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan and debuted in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #64 in 1982. the Dagger can emit light and Cloak has the ability to suck people into a darkness, plus the two are romantically linked perfect for the younger demographic the channel goes for.

The two are often connected to the war on drugs as many of their comics touched on the subject in the 80s. Who knows if they’ll focus on this, especially since Dagger can cure some drug addictions. Cloak’s power is somewhat of an addiction as he feels a hunger to feed it, with Dagger using her powers to help feed the hunger and abate it. Also Cloak’s power could easily be tied into the dark energy seen in this season of Agent Carter.

The Freeform upfronts released this info:

Marvel’s  Cloak  and  Dagger”  is  an  adaptation  of  the  beloved  Marvel  characters  whose  story  is aimed  squarely at  young  adults.  This  live‑action  interracial  romance  follows  Tandy  Bowen  and Tyrone  Johnson,  two  teenagers  from very different backgrounds, who  find  themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than  apart  ‑‑  but  their  feelings  for  each  other  make  their  already  complicated  world  even  more challenging.  “Marvel’s  Cloak  and  Dagger”  is  a  co‑production  of  Marvel  Television  and  ABC Signature Studios.

There have been rumors of a Marvel property coming to the channel for a while now, and instead shows have wound up on ABC the channels sister station. Both are owned by Disney which also owns Marvel.

This is in addition to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, the upcoming Marvel’s Most Wanted, and a top secret series from John Ridley.

Review: Civil War #1

civilwar001The Civil War tie-in to the Secret Wars crossover is something that has not really been seen yet with Secret Wars, at least not to this degree.  While other of the stories have relied on retelling their specific crossovers through replacement of characters, or fitting the series into Secret Wars, the story here plays out somewhat differently.  It doesn’t even seem to tie into Secret Wars at all, instead acting as an elaborate “What If?” story.  In this case though it is an elaborate take on this kind of story asking what would have happened if the Marvel Civil War had never ended and had continued.

After a decent setup to show what drove the two factions of heroes apart for good, the new ground rules are laid out for the torn apart country.  One half of the USA is ruled by Stark and is called the Iron.  Here registration rules where those with super abilities are registered and led to leave a life which protects them from society and which protects society from them.  The other half of the divide is the Blue, the Western portion controlled by Captain America.  This is much more like a libertarian homeland, where the only rules are the most basic.  As the two sides are brought together for peace talks, things will obviously not go so easily.  Instead a major incident leaves both sides once again at each other’s throats.

This first issue is interesting, not only because of the different approach that it takes to the Secret Wars crossover, but also because of the fundamental questions which the original crossover posed, questions to which there are no real easy answers, and they are also the questions which underlie much of the public discourse in politics at the moment, especially in the USA.  The nuances are here as to deeper questions, and while it doesn’t exactly get around to addressing them, they are still there.  This issue thus borders on something a lot deeper, while still giving an engaging story to get into.  It might not be the best overall tie-in thus far to Secret Wars, but it definitely one of the most thought-provoking, and deserves to be placed at the head of the pack.
