SDCC 2013: Skyward to Become Action Lab’s First Ongoing Series

Action Lab has announced that Jeremy Dale’s Skyward will become the first true ongoing title for the independent publisher.  Scheduled to debut at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, Skyward was originally envisioned as a six-issue mini-series, but it was decided, given the grand story that Dale wants to tell with the book, that an ongoing, sequentially-numbered title would be the best option.

In addition, each issue of Skyward, beginning with issue #3, will feature an alternate cover produced by some of the more popular and well-known artists in the industry.  Confirmed guest cover artists include Stephane Roux for issue 3, Mike Norton for issue 4, Khary Randolph for issue 5, Randy Green for issue 6, Phil Noto for issue 7, and Chris Giarrusso for Issue 8.

There are number of other artists already lined up for future issues, including Brandon Peterson, Tim Seely, Todd Nauck, Cully Hamner, Gene Ha, and more.

Issues 1 and 2 will also feature alternate covers, but these will be available only at San Diego Comic Con.  The issue 1 alternate has art by series creator Jeremy Dale, while issue 2’s alternate is a blank white sketch cover.

Beginning with issue 3, Skyward, and all Action Lab regular titles, will cost only $2.99, down from $3.99.

CBLDF Liberty Annual Gets 2nd Printing!

The 2012 CBLDF Liberty Annual, an anthology featuring top comics creators that benefits the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, is receiving a second printing — with two new covers!

The first is “Lady Liberty” by Ben Templesmith, a painting of a young woman wearing the Statue of Liberty’s iconic crown. The second is a new Image Comics 20th anniversary tribute cover by Chris Giarrusso — this time to Jim Valentino’s creation Shadowhawk.

All proceeds from the CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2012 benefit the important First Amendment legal work of the CBLDF, a non-profit group dedicated to protecting the free speech of the comics community of retailers, creators, publishers, librarians, and readers.

The anthology is 48 pages, featuring stories with the theme “It’s Good to Be Free,” edited by Image Publisher Eric Stephenson. It will be in stores on December 19.

Invincible Gets the G-Man Treatment

To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Image Comics, many titles published in 2012 have featured special variant covers by G-MAN creator Chris Giarrusso. Invincible#98 is the latest addition to a list that includes Bloodstrike #32, CBLDF Liberty Annual “Spawn” cover, Chew #29, Cyber Force #1, Elephantmen #44, Morning Glories #23, Savage Dragon #183, The Walking Dead #103, Witchblade #161, and Youngblood #71.

In every variant cover, Giarrusso reproduces the first issue cover of each series in the charming, cartoony style of his all-ages superhero comic G-MAN. His cover for Invincible#98, picturing a newly super-powered (and superhero-suited) Mark Grayson, recalls a more innocent time for Invincible, while, in the story within, the world is unprepared for Dinosaurus to unleash his master plan.

Published by Robert Kirkman‘s Image imprint Skybound, Invincible#98 written by Kirkman with art by Ryan Ottley and John Rauch, is the first part of the three-issue story arc “The Death of Everyone.” As Mark regains his powers, the fate of humanity is in his hands — and what happens from here on out will change everything for Invincible, culminating in an astonishing conclusion with the milestone issue Invincible#100.

Kickstarter Spotlight – Lazerman: This Man, This Lazer! Trade Paperback

HBComics has kicked their Kickstarter campaign for Lazerman: This Man, This Lazer! Trade Paperpack up a notch with variant covers from two well known artists.

Billy Tucci, Eisner award nominated creator of Shi, and more recently creator/artist of the biblical tale A Child is Born, has produced one of the variant covers being offered for Lazerman: This Man, This Lazer!. The cover has yet to be revealed, although HBComics.com features a Billy Tucci Lazerman pinup, also being offered through the crowd-funding campaign.

In addition, Chris Giarrusso, creator/artist of G-Man: Cape Crisis and Marvel Comic’s Mini-Marvels is also providing a variant cover for the campaign.

The Kickstarter campaign, which is HBComic’s first, is aimed at getting a trade paperback produced collecting the first four issues of the Lazerman series, according to series artist Chris Hebert. Lazerman is “an all ages, classic style super hero story about a comic book geek who, in a bizarre twist of fate, actually gets real super-powers.” The series is currently on it’s seventh issue.

Best Pledge: $20, $24 or $25 which will get you all seven issues, the trade or the variant covers depending on the level chosen.

CBLDF Liberty Annual features stories by top creators

This year’s CBLDF Liberty Annual anthology, benefiting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and published by Image Comics, declares “It’s good to be free!” Edited by Image Publisher Eric Stephenson, the 48-page anthology to be released on October 31 features short stories by some of comics’ hottest creators.

Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard contribute an all-new story about The Walking Dead arch-villain The Governor, who will be making his debut in the television series this season. The anthology also features incredible stories by Howard Chaykin, Kieron Gillen, Jim McCann, Terry Moore, Chris Roberson, James Robinson, and more! Eye-popping art by stars like Michael Allred, Chynna Clugston-Flores, Janet Lee, and Ben Templesmith completes this celebration of comics and free speech. In addition, previews of two upcoming Image comics—Storm Dogs by David Hine and Doug Braithwaite and The Savior by James Robinson and J. Bone—will be included.
