Unboxing: DC Comics Deck-Building: Crossover Expansion Pack 2: Arrow TV Series Card Game

Cryptozoic‘s DC Comics Deck-Building game is one of our favorite deck-building games out there. With each release they slowly add new mechanics, as well as new characters, that always change up the game just enough to make it feel fresh, but never over the top to make it feel like something completely different.

The company’s latest Crossover Expansion features cards based on The CW’s television show Arrow.

We open up the pack and go over the cards, talking about the new mechanics, and what they might bring to the game.

Cryptozoic Reveals some DC Deck-Building Plans for 2016

DC Deck-Building Teen TitansSpeaking to ICv2 at Gen Con, Cryptozoic reveal some of their plans for 2016 for the DC Comics Deck-Building Game. The company will be releasing a new expansion pack, Crisis Expansion Pack 3, which will feature the Suicide Squad, a new RivalsBatman Vs. Superman set that introduces a game board, another stand along set, and some other Crisis Packs.

The Suicide Squad focuses Crisis Pack sounds like it’ll be a fantastic addition to the game. Not only will it focus on cooperative play, but like Forever Evil featured the team of bad guys at the center of attention as the main focus of the game as far as playable characters. It also will attempt to create they’re rather fun bickering into the game in a new mechanic that includes a “traitor-ish” mechanic. There’s also a 100% cooperative play mode with heroes you can play with any of the sets. This expansion is planned in the first quarter of 2016.

Planned to come out when Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters, Cryptozoic will be releasing The DC Comics Deck-Building Game: Rivals-Batman vs. Superman set. This continues the Rivals set concept which is a two-player introductory game. The set will feature art from the comics, so it should be interesting to see what the set includes as far as that. The set will also feature a game board.

[The board] will actually be split down the middle long-ways. It’ll have Batman on one side, Superman on the other. So if I’m playing Batman, I sit over here and you are staring down Batman on my side of the board and vice versa. That’ll be very cool. We’re excited for that one.

The 2016 stand-alone box set is still being put together. The company is looking at a team-up concept with it being a 2-on-2 game instead of every man for themselves. This could be much needed variation to the game, which will be fantastic.

This December sees the release of a new Crossover Pack based on Watchmen. After that, there will be another one focused on villains and one based on The Flash television series.

Fionna & Cake Return with Their A-Game in Adventure Time with Fionna & Cake: Card Wars

As a bonus, each first-printing copy of issue #1 will come with an exclusive Adventure Time: Card Wars card, playable in the Cryptozoic Entertainment card game that itself was created based on an Adventure Time episode of the same name.

Cake is a Card Wars champ who can’t be beat, and Fionna…is really tired of getting beaten! They set off in search of a challenger who can really test Cake’s mettle. When they stumble across some gamer slugs, they think they’ve hit the jackpot, but these guys have never heard of Cake and refuse to even play with her!

Spyfall Probes and Bluffs Its Way Into Stores

SpyfallCryptozoic Entertainment has announced the release of the Spyfall deduction card game on June 10. Spyfall is an easy-to-learn card game of bluffing, probing questions, clever answers and suspicion. At the start of each round, players receive a secret card informing them of the group’s location – a casino, space station, pirate ship, circus, (30 unique locations), except one player receives the SPY card instead of the location. The Spy doesn’t know where they are, but wins the round if they can figure it out before blowing their cover.

Players ask each other questions during the intense 8-minute rounds. Non-Spy players ask questions and give answers to prove their location to the other players. If the questions and answers are too specific, the Spy can easily guess the location and win, so subtlety is key. If questions and answers are too generic, the player might be accused of being the Spy. The Spy will be asked questions and have to come up with questions of their own, without knowing anything about their location. By listening carefully to the other players, the Spy should be able to come up with a plausible question or answer.

Once per round, each player may accuse another player of being the Spy. If all players agree, the game ends and that player’s secret card is flipped up. If the Spy is captured, each of the non-Spy players win the round. If a non-Spy is revealed, the Spy wins. Finally, if the Spy figures out where they are, they can reveal their card and make a guess. If they’re right, they win the round. If not, the non-Spy players win. The game is played over a series of rounds and points are awarded each round. A complete game is typically five rounds and the cards are randomly dealt each round. A player could even be the Spy two rounds in a row. After the last round, the player with the most points is the winner.

Some bullet points of interest from the press announcement announcing the game’s release:

  • Number of Players: 3-8
  • For Ages: 15 and up
  • Easy to learn with quick game set up
  • Including 30 Locations for great replayability
  • Choose your own game length
  • Advanced game mode – location based
  • Great social party game
