Graphic Policy Radio talks Age of Ultron with Guest Sarah Jaffe LIVE this Monday

GP Radio pic MondayThis Monday is a brand new episode of Graphic Policy Radio, and we’re going to the movies again. The show airs LIVE this Monday at 10pm ET.

Marvel‘s Avengers: Age of Ultron has already proven itself to be one of the biggest films of the year. The film has already earned $1.2 billion globally. But popularity doesn’t necessarily mean the film has been universally praised. The movie has come under fire for its portrayal of women, the absence of women in tie-in products, and for other issues with the story itself. Joining us for the conversation is Sarah Jaffe.

Sarah Jaffe is a reporting fellow at the Nation Institute and a giant nerd who once upon a time wrote about comics more than she wrote about politics, believe it or not, and she has lots of feelings about superhero movies AND their politics. Follow her on Twitter https://twitter.com/sarahljaffe

So listen in, and join us in the conversation. Call in with your thoughts at (619) 768-2952, or Tweet them to us @graphicpolicy.

Listen in live this Monday at 10pm ET.

Pitch Perfect 2 Opens on Top, Mad Max in Second, Age of Ultron Drops to Third

pitch-perfect-2-pp2_rgbA big question going in to this past weekend was what film would be on top when it was all up. Pitch Perfect 2 was on top when the weekend settled, earning an estimated $70.3 million in its first weekend. The original film earned $14.8 million its first weekend and ended with $65 million domestically. Internationally the film earned $38.1 million for a total of $108.4 million its first week. That’s almost as much the first film earned its entire run.

Mad Max: Fury Road had to settle for second place with a solid $44.44 million. The film was rumored to be troubled, and early testing was poor which led to reshoots. The film is being praised, so whatever they did in between clearly worked to fix things.

With two high-profile films opening up, Avengers: Age of Ultron dropped to third in its third week. The film added $38.84 million to its domestic total. The film crossed the billion dollar mark worldwide. Its foreign total is $770.5 million. The film has earned a total of $1.143 billion so far.

In other comic movie news Kingsman: The Secret Service continues to earn at the box office. The film added another $191,000 domestically. The film has earned a total of $402.9 million globally.

So far Furious 7 holds the top spot globally earning $1.4888 billion. Age of Ultron sits at the top spot domestically.

Next weekend sees Tomorrowland and Poltergeist debut during the long holiday. Pitch Perfect 2 currently has a 69% rating on RottenTomatoes, Mad Max: Fury Road is an impressive 98%, and Age of Ultron is at 74%. It’ll be interesting to see what holds steady and what drops when the dust settles this time next week.

Check Out this 11-Foot Iron Man Hulkbuster Replica

Disney and Marvel‘s Avengers: Age of Ultron opens in China this week, but that didn’t stop middle-school art teach Xing Yile to go all Tony Stark and build his own Iron Man Hulkbuster suit. The 26 year old and his friends were so impressed with seeing the trailer for the film in March, they spent two months building their own.

But, the Hulkbuster suit wasn’t enough, Xing also built his own mini version of Iron Man’s suit as well. If you’re wonder where and how, the replica is built using fiber-reinforced plastic components and the construction took place in an underground parking lot in Zhengzhou, China.

That’s dedication and impressive.

He even has wheels so you can roll him around! Comes packaged in full-color window box with try-me feature. (Item #AUG142281, SRP: $49.99)

“I will accompany you, you may need protection.”
“Due to worn condition of memory bank, compliance impossible.”
“My power supply is getting very weak.”
“Emergency! Emergency!”
“I am a cybernetic servo mechanism and computer.”
“Affirmative.”
“Astronomical scanning data indicates that you are now observing Omega Nebula!”
“It would be against the prime directive of robotics to expose human beings to danger of any kind.”
“Warning! Warning!”
“Launch time, T-minus 1 minute and counting.”

Avengers: Age of Ultron Remains on Top

Avengers_Age_Of_Ultron-poster1In its second week at the domestic box office, Avengers: Age of Ultron earned an additional $77.2 million. That’s a drop of 59.6% from the previous week. That’s the second highest second week ever, just behind the original film. Domestically the film has earned $312.6 million so far, just 35.7% of its total.

Internationally, the film added $65 million to bring its total at the foreign box office to a total of $562.4 million. It has yet to open in Japan or China, so expect an impressive boost from those two markets.

The film has earned a total of $874.99 million so far and had an estimated budget of $250 million. It’ll likely be two more weeks before the film crosses the billion dollar mark, but it does have tough competition with the opening of Pitch Perfect 2, and Mad Max: Fury Road.

In other movie news Furious 7 continues to earn, adding $5.3 million domestically to its total this past weekend. The film has earned $338.4 million domestically, and worldwide is at $1.47 billion. The film has about $50 million to go to move into the third highest grossing film worldwide ever passing the original Avengers. There’s a chance it pulls it off. The big question too will be if Age of Ultron can catch up to the film and beat it to the finish line as top grossing film of the year.

In other comic movie news, Kingsman: The Secret Service continues to earn in its 13th week. The film added $235,000 domestically to bring its total to $127.2 million and worldwide total to $402.75 million.

Kid Avengers: A Little Age of Ultron Parody Trailer

DreamWorksTV and “Not Marvel Studios” are assembling the Avengers  – err, little Avengers – once again to take on a new threat: Ultron.  Armed with hairdryers, Nerf bow and arrows and trash can lid armor, these elementary school kids unite for the greater good: to put an end to homework.

Will these Kids Avengers capture Ultron and take him to detention?

Demo-Graphics: Age of Ultron

I have the habit of going in and using Facebook’s advertising platform to see what the demographics of individuals who like certain terms is. With Marvel‘s Avengers: Age of Ultron dominating theaters this weekend, I decided to hop in and see what the stats might be.

Usually when it comes to films, the percentages returned are similar to the reported demographics. In this case, things are a bit off. You can see the stats below. Both terms for the Avengers, as well as Marvel are included.

Interesting that this one is so far off. The movie was actually 59% male according to reports. It is also interesting the film didn’t meet its projects and the gender split wasn’t as close for the audience as the first film when it debuted.

Age of Ultron Falls Short of the Record

Avengers_Age_Of_Ultron-poster1When some folks were predicting a $200 million opening, is anything less a failure? Marvel‘s Avengers: Age of Ultron ruled the box office, naturally, and opened with an impressive $187.7 million. That’s the second-best debut ever. Marvel’s first Avengers holds the record at $207.4 million.

The film did have one record. It accounted for 85 percent of the top 12 box office. That beats the Spider-Man 3‘s 83 percent.

While the film earned more than the first Avengers film on Friday, it performed worse on Saturday, 18 percent lower. It earned $57.2 million which was below the first film as well as Iron Man 3 which earned $62.3 million.

There’s many factors as to why the film fell short including sporting events like the NBA playoffs, The Kentucky Derby, and even the Pacquiao vs Mayweather fight.

The film was 59 percent male and 59 percent over the age of 25. It also received an “A” Cinemascore.

Internationally, the film added $168 million to bring its total to $439 million. It opened with the biggest debut ever in Mexico and the second highest in Thailand. It opens in China May 12th.

The film has now earned $626.7 million in the two weeks its been open worldwide and it had an estimated budget of $250 million.

In other movie news, Furious 7 dropped to third place after ruling the box-office. It earned another $6.2 million to bring its domestic total to $330.5 million. Globally the film has earned $1.43 billion. The film is in fourth for all-time worldwide grosses. There’s a chance it knocks off the first Avengers to move into third.

In other comic movie news, Kingsman: The Secret Service earned an additional $185,000. The film has earned $401.3 million worldwide to date.
