Review: X-Men Prime #1

In the wake of their war with the Inhumans, the X-Men are at a crossroads. Where do they go from here? Luckily, one beloved X-Men has the answer to that question: Xavier’s dream comes full circle as Kitty Pryde returns to the X-Men, ready to lead them in their mission to protect a world that hates and fears them. The next chapter of the X-Men’s saga starts here!

With ResurrXion Marvel is setting the X-Men on to a new path… which looks a lot like their old path in a new direction and status quo picking up after their battle with the Inhumans.

What’s interesting about this one-shot is writer Marc Guggenheim doesn’t just give us some broad strokes, he teases out each of the new series that’ll be released in the coming months as well as reflecting on not just recent events but what also feels like the latest editorial direction for this once powerful intellectual property. There’s discussions of losing one’s way and not knowing where to go that’s spoken by Storm and while she says this to Kitty Pryde, it feels like Guggenheim is delivering those words to long time X-Men fans. It’s almost a “we hear you, we’re righting the ship” moment.

Instead of giving us three or four short stories each new series is presented in a few pages in a comic that jumps around a bit exploring each in a unique way. While the Blue/Gold split feels organic, the shoe-horning in of the upcoming Weapon X series feels a little forced and doesn’t quite flow like so much of the comic.

Artists Ken Lashley, Leonard Kirk, and Ibraim Roberson all do their part in setting up the various segments in their style and it all works together. While some art shifts are noticeable, overall the comic flows well with little issues as far as visuals.

X-Men Prime is a solid re-introduction into the world of the X-Men and delivers an easy way for fans to catch up as well as see the new direction. What’s bigger is some of it feels like an apology to long time fans who have felt that the X-Men have been second tier and lost their way. It’s a welcome return to a more classic narrative which will hopefully be delivered in entertaining and fun new ways.

The X-Men Blue and Gold Teams and Creators are Revealed

With Marvel‘s next big X-Men event Inhumans vs. X-Men kicking off this week, we’re already looking ahead to what comes after. About a month ago the comic publisher began to release teasers for ResurrXion which hinted as to what’s to come next. Two of those teasers were for X-Men: Blue and X-Men: Gold which went for the nostalgia of long time fans. In the 90s the X teams were split into two squads, Blue and Gold, before being merged back together.

While we knew about the return of the split, we didn’t know who would be involved creatively or what the roster of each team would consist of (though each teaser makes that part clear in retrospect).

X-Men: Gold will be written by Marc Guggenheim with art by Ardian Syaf and consist of Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Old Man Logan, Rachel Grey, and Kitty Pryde who will be the new team leader.

This new series will take the team back to its roots in many ways with a new iteration returning to the focus on racism and anti-mutant hysteria… oh yeah, there’s also a new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. With Pryde as the leader it’s a more positive outlook and the team getting back to being heroes. That means no more Guardians of the Galaxy for Kitty Pryde and also Storm stepping aside and passing the baton. Rachel Grey also gets a makeover and a new codename of Prestige.

X-Men: Blue will be written by Cullen Bunn with art by Jorge Molina with the time-trapped Cyclops, Iceman, Beast, Angel, Jean Grey as the leader, and Magneto as a mentor. That last part sets some interesting things up because it was Magneto that the team first battled so many years ago and they really only know him as that having missed that character’s evolution over the years.

The two teams will also operate out of the same headquarters, but it’s unknown if it’s the current HQ located in Limbo.

The two series launch April 2017 and will ship twice a month.

Review: Batman/Superman #26

BatmanSuperman26Superman enlists the help of Batgirl, Redhood, Dick Grayson, and Batman to protect a group of people forced to mine uranium for Vandal Savage. As the story unfold, Vandal’s intentions become more clear and more treacherous. Now, everyone must figure out how to stop the immortal Savage before his destructive plan begins.

Batman/Superman #26 mainly focuses on Superman and the repercussions from a previous fight he had with Vandal Savage. He was defeated and psychologically, he has not been able to recover. Superman’s struggle with who his is and who he was is the heart of the story. Writer Greg Pak, does a phenomenal job showing how far he has fallen. Those he is protecting at the camp still see him as a hero. They see him as a symbol of hope. He himself cannot see this though and it causes a great ideological dichotomy between the two views. The character interactions are also well done. Each heroes personality shines through and feels appropriate. The main issue with the story is the way Batman is presented. He does not arrive until midway through and immediately solves all of the mystery behind Vandal Savage’s plan. This goes in the face of Superman actually calling Batgirl a genius. By establishing her as a genius, it makes little sense that she could not have solved everything herself. He also makes Red Hood and Grayson look incompetent in the process during the climatic battle.

The art is consistently strong throughout. The action scenes are well paced and well designed. Each character model is distinct and unique in both look and emotional expression. There really isn’t a bad panel in the entire issue. Each page is very solid.

Overall, this issue is only meant to build towards an eventual battle with Vandal Savage. And, while there may be issues with Batman and how his portrayal effects others, the story is very entertaining. There are many quality character moments and Superman internal struggle makes this a very good read.
