Review: The New 52: Futures End #48

I read a lot of The New 52: Futures End, but at some point I trailed off. While the story was interesting, the weekly deluge of it all caught up to me as missed issues grew more and more. The New 52: Futures End #48 wraps up the weekly series, sort of (and we’ll get to that). [I know this review begins the same way as Earth 2: World’s End #26, but that’s because my thoughts and experience is similar].

The issue has a hodgepodge of creators listed including writers Brian Azzarello, Jeff Lemire, Dan Jurgens and Keith Giffen and artists Allan Goldman, Freddie Williams II, Andy Macdonlad, Stephen Thompson and Scott Hanna. That’s a lot of input, and the only spot I think that shows up is with the art which is ok, but nothing spectacular. It’s decent art, but for a huge issue, I expected a bit more.

As someone who hasn’t read the series for quite a while, I was able to hop into the story and get what was going on, so that’s solid. There’s a couple of things I had to think through, but generally I knew what was up. The story is interesting because of that whole wrapping up. I can’t say if it’s satisfying for long-time readers, and it leaves one massive cliffhanger that I wonder how or if it’ll be explored post DC’s next big event Convergence. Potentially it can be very cool, and something I’d check out.

The ending was interesting enough for me to want to go back and see what I missed, it seems like it’s a time-traveling head trip, but standing on its own, the issue is decent, and what stands out is its rather bleak ending. To see a comic end on a somewhat downer (I don’t consider that a spoiler) is interesting, and almost welcome in a weird way. For DC, which I’d consider a bit sunnier than rivals, it’s an odd tone, and one I welcome.

Is this really the End for Futures End? We’ll find out in a few months. This gets me to want to find out what’s next. To be continued in Batman Beyond #1?

NYCC 11 – Review – American Terrorist Chapter 1 and 2

Leading up to New York Comic Con, writer Tyler Chin-Tanner was nice enough to hook me up with the first seven issues if his debuting series, American Terrorist.  I’ve gotten through the first two and can’t wait to read the rest.

The comic follows a newspaper reporter whose life spirals out of control as the stories he follows gets him watched by the FBI and eventually branded a terrorist.  The comic isn’t exactly what I thought it’d be, which was a focus on a domestic terrorist and their motivation, instead it’s a comedy of errors that gets Owen Graham into trouble.

Much like thousands of Americans, he unjustly is identified and branded a person of interest.  All he’s been doing is his job, which is a reporter.  This leads to an overzealous FBI agent chasing him across the country and a conflict at the end of the second issue that is best to not give away.

But the main focus of the series, so far is how three innocent individuals are wrongly identified and branded as terrorists.  They all happen into this in their own way, two through their job, one through mental issues.  It’s a great statement as to where we as Americans are and a solid reminder that we’re all a simple mistake away from being watched and branded an enemy of the state.

American Terrorist Released at NYCC 2011

A Wave Blue World announces the release of their new graphic novel, American Terrorist, at the New York Comic Con this October 13-16 at Small Press table 2542.  Cover

American Terrorist is the story of average Americans who get fed up with the system and start their own revolution. It is a 214-page graphic novel written by Tyler & Wendy Chin-Tanner (Adrenaline) and drawn by Andy MacDonald (Punisher, Terminator)

The NYCC release will feature a limited run of the black and white edition. A full color version will be digitally released at the same time through online retailers such as Comics by Comixology. The color art was done by Matt Wilson (Wonder Woman, Wolverine) and Michael Wiggam (Star Wars).

A war has been waged against the American people. It’s a covert war, one that those in power hope will go unnoticed, but day by day, jobs, homes, pensions, healthcare coverage, quality of life, and civil liberties are taken away, while the gap between the haves and the have-nots grows wider and wider.

With no way out, four activists become fugitives from the law and go on the offensive against corruption and injustice. Sharing their story with the nation using social media, they inspire their followers to rise up and reclaim their country.

Support – American Terrorist: The Graphic Novel

We’re going to start highlighting some of the various comic book projects currently seeking funding through Kickstarter.  Today’s spotlight is American Terrorist: The Graphic Novel (seemed like a good one to start with considering this blog’s subject matter).

Described as a story of “passion, activism, and political dissent” and is produced by the husband and wife team of Tyler and Wendy Chin-Tanner, art by Andy MacDonald, colors by Matt Wilson and published by A Wave Blue World.

Angered and frustrated with the current system, four American citizens adopt extreme tactics in order to expose and combat the injustices, corruption, greed, inequality they feel are ruining their nation.

Investigative reported Owen Graham, public school teacher Hannah Bloom, civil rights lawyer Michael Clar, and EPA scientist Shannon Lim view themselves as activists, even patriots when they go to extreme measures to enact change in their country. They are labeled many things by others, including terrorists. A battle of perception is waged over the internet as they try to walk the line between political protest and violent uprising.
