Updated: Space Ghost Returns for a Second Volume this July from Dynamite

The new Space Ghost comic series from David Pepose and Jonathan Lau and published by Dynamite has been fantastic but how long it’d run has been a big question. Thankfully, the quality continues with a second volume kicking off in July from the team. This new first issue follows an annual being released in June.

The Guardian of the Spaceways is back, welcoming continuing readers and inviting new ones to hop right back on with a fresh tale and interwoven recaps. Superfan turned chronicler David Pepose is bringing more evil-thwarting action and excitement. Virtuoso veteran artist Jonathan Lau is ready to unleash his kinetic artwork bringing these new scripts to the page. Together, with the rest of the creative team including colorist Andrew Dalhouse and letterer Taylor Esposito, they’re bringing more from a run that critics and fans have proclaimed to be a seamless blend of the iconic original animation’s spirit and modern superhero and action comics sensibilities.

This new jumping-on point kicks off with the first appearance in the series of a classic villain. Space Ghost and Blip find themselves on a planet themed all around amusement parks that has been taken over by the maniacal Toymaker, with a high stakes hostage crisis at hand. Meanwhile, Jan and Jace are confronted by a mysterious figure from their past that will shake the Ghost Planet team to their core.

Pepose and company have largely packed each and every issue with a complete epic, while continuing subplots, turning to larger arcs when ramping things up even more, to give fans what they want! August’s second issue brings in another exciting character with Space Ghost’s notorious old flame the Eclipse Woman. When her energy-bending crime spree crosses paths with ruthless crime lord Boss Parko, Space Ghost and the twins get drawn into a deadly orbit.

This new series features galactically-inspired covers from superstars Francesco Mattina, Jae Lee and June Chung, Bjorn Barends, Michael Cho, and an incredible surprise piece from the legend Alex Ross!

Power Lords #1 power up some cosmic adventure

Power Lords #1

When deep-space smuggler Adam Power comes into possession of the mysterious Power Jewel, he finds himself transformed into something far greater and more powerful than the sum of his parts—only to discover he’s been drafted into an eons-old battle between good and evil that could rend entire galaxies asunder! Power Lords #1 is the latest revival of an 80s property.

Written by Dennis Culver and Matt Hotson, Power Lords #1 kicks off a new chapter for the classic series and delivers a start that’s entertaining and shows some promise. Power Lords is an 80s property I barely remember. Some of the character designs look familiar but the overall concept and any detail is totally lost to me. The comic dumps readers right into the action focused not so much on what each character can do but instead more focused on the plot to come. We get a general sense of who everyone is and there’s some interesting things with time travel, but overall, the introduction falls a bit short of giving a reason to care for these characters beyond the twist of the comic. They go through motions with no connection as to why I should care about the outcomes of that.

The art by V Ken Marion is good. With color by Andrew Dalhouse and lettering by Taylor Esposito, the comic has a lot going on for the characters. There’s a few panels where it’s not quite clear what’s happening but overall, with such a varied design of a cast, it all looks good. There’s noticeable size differences in the characters that really help them pop and the action has a certain “middle of it all” feel to it.

Power Lords #1 isn’t a bad start but at the same time beyond it’s later twist, there’s little that makes it interesting. The characters feel torn from 80s action films representing more of an archetype than actual characters. Overall, it’s another Nacelleverse launch that feels a bit more focused on the flash of it all than the depth.
