Batman, Batwoman, and the entire team take the fight to the deadly Colony! Those highly trained operatives took the Bat-team apart on their own turf…so how will they fare when the Colony is in its element, with all their weapons trained on our heroes?

Action. Lots of action. That’s the majority of Detective Comics #938 which has the team taking on the Colony in their own HQ. Writer James T. Tynion IV brings us some really cool moments in the issue that’s non-stop action.

The comic answers a lot of questions too. It right away answers how Colonel Kane came to head up this clandestine group and we’re shown that he’s gone off the reservation a bit when it comes to his actions. They’re probably not sanctioned.

But, from there, it’s lots of but kicking as a lot of the characters are given moments to shine, particularly Red Robin, Spoiler, Clayface, and Cassandra Cain. They all stand out as they battle the waves of bad guys and each shows off what each brings to the team.

Alvaro Martinez brings it when it comes to the art. His character detail isn’t the best, but in the costumes things look great. What I particularly like is the multiple panel spreads and some of the angles of the panels, things look really cool. There’s some great moments with Clayface and Cain in particular and they look awesome doing it.

There’s a great entertaining story going on here. It’s fast paced and I feel like we’ve thrown in the deep end of things when it comes to the story. That’s not a bad thing at all and really fun so far. I’m excited to see where this goes next because so far there’s been a hell of a lot of action already.

Batman’s found his way into the heart of the Colony, the mysterious new organization cutting its way through Gotham City! Unfortunately, now that he’s in he may find there’s no way out!

In just a few issues writer James T Tynion IV has shaken up the Bat family’s world in quite a few ways. One is by turning a past ally against them. The other is by creating a new foe that makes a hell of a lot of sense when you think about it.

This issue gives us the lowdown on the Colony, their background, their plan and how everyone fits into it. It’s a solid issue that allows us to find out about the bad guy in a straightforward way. It’s all government conspiracy and hopefully we see this play out well down the road, but most importantly it feels new and interesting.

Tynion uses everything to give us greater detail, from how these new Batsuits work, to hints as to how to defeat them, and finally just how well skilled they are. It’s a great use of every panel to add details. There’s also the introduction of a new character that I have a feeling we’ll see more of.

We also get to see how smart Tim Drake actually is and how his planning is downright cool. There’s some great additions to the Bat arsennal of toys and vehicles and I expect we’ll see more of all of that.

The art by Alvaro Martinez is fantastic. There’s so muc detail, it’s just amazing and I found myself lingering on every page trying to go through every small item to see what was there and what I might gleam from it.

This is a solid arc so far that really shakes things up in the Bat-world. From the writing to the art, it’s all top notch and impressive and I can’t wait to see where it all goes from here. The action is just getting started and it looks to be exciting.

Batman is M.I.A., and it’s time for Batwoman to take the reins! But can she control a strike force that’s barely worked together… including unstable wildcard Clayface?

Batman is down and what is Batwoman and this new team that’s been gathered to do? Kate has to make a decision and she seeks out a lot of advice in the beginning. First of which is some personal advice from a friend, which is an awesome nod to her personal life! It’s something we see as a costume for Batman, but with Kate, her being Batwoman is the costume. She attempts to have a personal life. And the beginning of this issue lays a lot out as far as that and it adds a lot of depth to the character for people who might be new to the series.

The other person she talks to is Red Robin who gives her a lot of advice about Batman himself and why he might have chosen Kate to lead the team. It’s a really good discussion not only setting up her leadership but, more importantly getting her to stand out from Batman. She’s more than the female Batman. Her outlook, her background, the way she does things, it’s different and we see some of that in this issue.

The issue also has a big reveal and twist. It’s not just learning who these Batman like people are, but some of what they’re about. It’s a pretty big twist and I didn’t see it coming in time. So, kudos on writer James T Tynion IV for keeping me on my toes.

There’s also a chance this could be a new solid villain. There’s a vibe about them that feels like they’re a more high-tech Court of Owls, and that’s not a bad thing since the Court was the best new Batman addition in a while.

Artist Alvaro Martinez‘s art is really solid and helped by the inks of Raul Fernandez and colors of Brad Anderson. There’s some cool angles and perspectives in some panels and some of the “lighting” is really solid. Some that springs to mind are a few panels that feature Batwoman and Red Robin in front of computer screens.

The comic is a nice build that sets up Batman as fallible, sets Kate/Batwoman apart, and has a hell of a twist at the end that I didn’t see coming. It’s exciting! It’s fun! And it’s really cool to me. I’m digging the comic and the fact it’s kept up quality shipping twice a month is impressive. I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes, and hopefully, it can continue to keep me on my toes.
