Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Joe

Top Pick: Superman #20 (DC Comics) – With the Superman Reborn arc finishing, I cannot wait to see where this book goes. The creative team has been amazing on this run, and it looks like we are going to get more information on Mr. Oz, and what we saw in the first Rebirth book. I love this comic!

Batman #20 (DC Comics) – Tom King has been building toward a crazy ending (hopefully), and this book has been off the wall with Bane being more crazed than ever. I trust King as a writer and expect all of this craziness and slow burn to pay off.

Extremity #2 (Image) – This is such a beautifully drawn comic, and Johnson writes the hell out of this book too. I have high hopes for this comic, and the first issue was amazing.

Paper Girls #13 (Image) – This book by Brian K. Vaughn has been so much fun, and it is an awesome 80s movie following the formula of Goonies or Stand By Me with all females. This is one of the best books out.

Black Science #29 (Image) – Remender doesn’t write too much I do not like, and this is one of his best.

Paul

Top Pick: X-Men Gold #1 (Marvel) – I am very excited for this book!  Just when I thought Marvel had written off my favourite characters, we get ‘ResurrXion’ and the X-Men are coming back in force.  I’m loving the line up of this book (not loving Rachel’s new ‘Prestige’ name and look) but these are some of my favourite X-Men and I know this is going to be an exciting book.

Royals #1 (Marvel) – So the Inhumans are heading to space, and I will be along for the ride.  I’m curious as to how Marvel Boy plays into this, but it should be a fun romp to see the Inhumans travel space and discover unknown secrets about their race.

Uncanny Avengers #22 (Marvel) – The Red Skull has been captured and now the Avengers are going to perform brain surgery to remove Charles Xavier’s brain and telepathic abilities from the Skull.  But what’s going to happen is anyone’s guess, and I’m sure this all isn’t going to go very smoothly.  It’s all been leading to this and I can’t wait to see how it ends.

Alex

Top Pick: Faith #10 (Valiant) – I’m a huge fan of this series, and I make no effort to hide that.

X-Men Gold #1 (Marvel) – A new X-Men team book… I’m hoping it’ll be fun.

Nightwing #18 (DC Comics) – Hands down the best biweekly Batman family book right now, and this issue sees the former Batman and Robin reunited in the third part of the current arc. I do so enjoy the interaction between Nightwing and Damian.

All-New Wolverine #19 (Marvel) – I’ve been waiting for a new story arc to start in this series so that I can jump on board, and it looks like that point is finally here.

Shay

It’s a week of Lady Powered awesomeness at the comic book shop.

Top Pick: America #2 (Marvel) – In an issue that spawned the line ” Try me, Becky” America cranks it up to eleven and I’m all the way here for it!

Top Pick: Harley Quinn #17 (DC Comics) – Harley Quinn and Harley Sin are about to go head to head in the start of the Deadly Sin story arc. Got popcorn?

Hawkeye #5 (Marvel) – Hawkeye is opening her own PI shop and who doesn’t love some good Marvel universe mysteries?

Jessica Jones #7 (Marvel) – She’s trying to have it all and we are all rooting for her, especially with the way the writers screwed the pooch last time.

Brett

Top Pick: Motor Girl #5 (Abstract Studios) – Writer and artist Terry Moore has been crushing it on this series that is just too weird to describe. UFOs, a talking gorilla, protecting a junkyard, it’s fun sci-fi that has a kick-ass female lead and is packed with heart and humor.

Colossi #1 (Vault Comics) – With every release so far Vault comics has delivered an entertaining read. Written by Ricard Mo with art by Alberto Muriel and Amaya Diaz, Colossi is solid sci-fi with a shuttle being sucked into a wormhole and the passengers lost in a parallel universe fighting to survive.

Eleanor & The Egret #1 (Aftershock Comics) – Writer John Layman and artist Sam Kieth alone are reason enough for me to be excited for this series that revolves around a daring art thief.

Kill Shakespeare: Past is Prologue – Juliet #1 (IDW Publishing) – The Kill Shakespeare world is back!!! It’s been too long and I’m beyond excited to return to this world that’s a nice twist on the classic characters. Even someone like me who doesn’t know a lot of Shakespeare can enjoy it.

Love & Rockets Magazine #2 (Fantagraphics Books) – It’s Love & Rockets, do I need to give more of a reason than that?

5726464-0+anwolv2015018_dc11_lr-0With her allies at her back, Wolverine will face off against her oldest enemy…one last time. It’s Laura versus Kimura, and only one will walk away.

Tom Taylor brings to a close the “Enemy of the State II” storyline and we see Wolverine close a very dark and brutal chapter of her life.  I wish I could say this was a satisfying ending to this story arc, but unfortunately, it fell rather flat with me. The issue felt rushed, like it was just trying to end this already, which is what I was admittedly thinking as I read it.  There are a couple of good moments where you can really feel for Laura and her struggles to finally put an end to the darker aspects of her life, but for me at least, it wasn’t enough to make this the closing I was hoping for.

Nik Virella‘s art in this issue is alright, though some if the faces and body proportions are really off in some panels which just makes the characters look weird.  But Wolverine is depicted well in the more emotional scenes that really make you feel for her situation, as mentioned above.  Her emotions are clearly displayed and it helps this story plod along.

Overall, this was just an okay issue. Yeah, we got the showdown between Laura and Kimura and I was happy to see that all play out, but the issue just lacked any real punch. It felt like it was just slogging along to the ending I’m sure everyone saw coming. I really hope the next arc takes Wolverine in a more exciting direction as I am a big fan of Laura taking up the mantle and I’m not ready to write this title off.

Review: All-New Wolverine #17

5681502-anwolv2015017_dc11-0In issue #16, Wolverine was captured by her former handler, Kimura, and was set loose in Madripoor to go after Tyger Tiger, who was laced with the infamous trigger scent that sends Laura into a berzerker rage. Kimura doesn’t want Tyger Tiger to continue working towards making Mardipoor a legitimate, respectable place so Wolverine is unleashed. But Gambit arrives on the scene and the issue ends with a playing card being launched at an advancing Wolverine. So here is All-New Wolverine #17, and as the cover hints, we’re going to see one heck of a show down….right?

Wrong. In this issue we have Laura waking up after being hit with said playing card, blowing up and healing. We have Gabby, Gambit and Warren looking after her and explaining to her that Tyger Tiger is fine and the three of them are going to help her get over her being controlled by the trigger scent. And, to her surprise, Jean Grey has been called in to help her. So Laura is locked in a room with Gabby and a vial of trigger scent that she douses herself with. Laura attacks, Gabby evades and Jean goes into Laura’s mind to help unlock the parts of her mind that keep her slave to the scent.

Meanwhile, Angel and Gambit keep watch for anyone coming to attack their hideout, and are surprised to see SHIELD on approach. Angel intercepts and find out that Tyger Tiger went to SHIELD about the attack by Laura, wanting to keep everything legitimate. They didn’t think, however, that Kimura would be keeping an eye out and following them and she blows their aircraft out of the sky. While this is going on, Jean is inside Laura’s mind, talking to her younger self where she hides when the trigger scent takes over. When all is said and done, it would appear that Wolverine is cured of her hold the trigger scent has on her.

So yeah, if you were hoping for a throw down with Gambit, or this issue picking up where the last one ended, you are in for disappointment. Tom Taylor gives us a rather boring, disjointed issue that really has a ‘been there, done that’ feel to it. Oh no, Laura is captured again; oh no, the trigger scent has her again.  And really, Kimura again? I could have sworn Emma Frost pulled a mind whammy on her and had Kimura go back to The Facility and take care of those in charge (New X-Men Vol. 2 issue #36). But here we have a tired plot device and Kimura controls Laura again. Djibril Morisette-Phan does a fine enough job with the art. Some of the faces look a little strange in some panels, but overall the art is alright. Nothing groundbreaking, but not terrible either.

Overall, I have to say I am disappointed in where this title has gone. When it was launched, we had Laura out as Wolverine, starting a new life and carving a new future for herself. And seventeen issues in and we’re back to the same old story of Laura being under the control of Kimura. Like throwing in the Phoenix Force, or mutants being killed off or time travel, this is a tired, stale plotline that I wish would just end. Sure, the Weapon X program always reared it’s ugly head towards Logan every now and then, but it was always in new ways; it wasn’t the same single guy always showing up to capture him. All-New Wolverine started off being fresh and full of potential, but now this book needs a real improvement to make it feel ‘all new’ again.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

black-history-month-in-its-own-wordsWednesdays are new comic book day!

Ben

Black History In Its Own Words (Image Comics) – Criminally, I’m behind on Ronald Wimberly’s work, despite the fact that his recent Image Comics work, Prince of Cats (once a publication of Vertigo), has been making waves with its unique premise and gorgeous art. Black History In Its Own Words sounds like a great endeavor in the same effort as March, using the comics medium as a way to educate on important moments and figures in black history. We already know comics can be art, can be literature, but what about educational? Comics can be a teaching tool for reading and drawing, so it only makes sense it should take the next step in teaching all too important academia such as history, science, math, government, etc.

All-New Wolverine #17 (Marvel) – I’ve only read the first volume so far, but X-23 as the All-New Wolverine has one me over. She continues on the powerful themes of the original character, dealing with anger and finding more meaning in life than violence, while exploring her own unique personality. Most superhero comics have overdone action to the point that it’s no longer fun, but the creative team here manages to keep it so while not forgetting character development. Definitely one of the best among new Marvel titles.

Paul

Top Pick: Inhumans vs. X-Men #4 (Marvel) – This event has been a rock ’em sock ’em ride from the get go.  The X-Men are fighting for their survival and they are definitely not holding back.  The action has been non stop as the X-Men have taken out the Inhuman’s heavy hitters, but they may have underestimated the Nuhumans and their ability to push back. It’s only going to get more cut throat as this goes on and I can’t wait to see where this goes.

Jessica Jones #5 (Marvel) – When I started reading this title, I was a little annoyed that Marvel took Jessica back to her “darker” self, after everything that was established with her and Luke Cage.  But I have bee enjoying this title, and the last issue definitely cleared some things up for me.  I’m liking the set up of the “big bad” in this title and I am curious to see what the end game is.  I very good title that I recommend.

The Unworthy Thor #4 (Marvel) – Odinson is held prisoner on the Collector’s ship; a strange hammer within his reach, but the Collector wants the power for himself.  And to make matters worse, Proxima Midnight and Black Swan have crashed the party.  I’ve been enjoying this book, but really just want to see Odinson get his hands on this hammer already!

Justice League of America: Rebirth #1 (DC Comics) – I’ll be honest, the Rebirth titles I was reading didn’t hold my interest (though I do want to go back to Red Hood, Birds of Prey and Teen Titans as I lost track of them) but I am intrigued by the team line up of this book.  I read the Rebirth stories for The Ray and Killer Frost, which I enjoyed, and Black Canary and Vixen are favorites of mine, so I’m hoping this book can deliver.

Joe

Top Pick: Kingpin #1 (Marvel) – Matt Rosenberg has been of the best and most consistent writers lately. He has done some fantastic miniseries, and we get him on a big Marvel ongoing. Finally! With how he wrote the character on the CW2 miniseries, and it being the best thing to happen to that event, my expectations are through the roof for this book. Be excited.

Moonshine #5 (Image Comics) – This has been a solid and underrated book by Azzarello about mobsters, Appalachia, and werewolves. It is such an original tale that has packed an intriguing mystery about city slickers coming to the mountains with booze and blood involved.

Detective Comics #950 (DC Comics) – The oversized anniversary special that is priced at $3.99, that is a beautiful concept everyone should follow. I love this series, and James Tynion IV hasn’t let me down yet. I don’t expect him to anytime soon.

The Unworthy Thor #4 (Marvel) – It’s been so far so good for the return of Jason Aaron writing Odinson, and there’s only a few issues remaining. Will Thor get his original hammer? Or at least the ultimate version? Will he ride off into the sunset and allow Jane to remain the God of Thunder? I suspect a new ongoing. I can’t wait to find out.

The Flash #16 (DC Comics) – Finally the Rogues have returned! Josh Williamson has done a solid job with this series, but now that the Rogues have returned, it’s getting even better.

Alex

Top Pick: Ninjak #24 (Valiant) – This is the first time that Ninjak has been my top pick in a long time, if ever. Matt Kindt has always been consistent with his writing on the series, but with the last issue he kicked it up a gear, and I can’t wait to see where he takes us with this issue.

All-Star Batman #7 (DC Comics) – Scott Snyder and Jock gave me Batman #44, which remains one of the best issues of Batman I have ever read. Needless to say, I’m excited to get a whole story from these two.

Divinity III: Shadowman #1 (Valiant) – Honestly, this was a toss up between this and Detective Comics #950, with this issue coming out on top because of it’s relation to the main Divinity III miniseries. The more content  I can get from the Stalinverse, the happier I am.

Red Hood And The Outlaws #7 (DC Comics) – An unsung gem in DC’s line up, this darkly funny (whether it’s supposed to be or not) series has become one of the ones I look forward to the most each month.

Brett

Top Pick: Black History In Its Own Words (Image Comics) – Ron Wimberly takes us through a look at Black History framed by those who made it. As a white guy with a large gap in my knowledge, I’m looking forward to filling in some of that.

Black #4 (Black Mask Studios) – The series has been an interesting one, and while not perfect, each issue has been thought provoking with a depth not usually found in superhero comics.

Death Be Damned #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Seven outlaws have killed Miranda Coler and her family, but her death turned out to be a little less permanent than they expected. A western tale of revenge is exactly what I’ve been looking for.

Divinity III: Shadowman #1 (Valiant) – This latest “event” miniseries from Valiant has been absolutely amazing. Any opportunity to get more about this world, I’m excited.

The Fissure #1 (Vault Comics) – El Sueño, Texas was a single street town withering under the shadow of the Mexico-U.S. Barrier. Then the pavement split, and a massive crack spread from one end to the other, rapidly swallowing El Sueño whole. Young couple Avery Lee Olmos and Hark Wright fight to escape the mysterious sinkhole and the malevolent force that beckons from its depths. Writer Tim Daniel has kicked ass with these types of stories and this debut from Vault Comics is one I’ve had my eye on for quite some time.
