All New Fathom #1 Continues Aspen’s 10 for 10 in July

Aspen Comics is gearing up to release their sixth title in their successful “10 for 10” initiative this July, Michael Turner’s Fathom. In accordance with the 15-year anniversary of the title, and a planned summer crossover leading into the new series, the All New Fathom #1 will feature a new direction for the series and an excellent jumping-on point for new readers. From writer David Wohl and Alex Konat and Beth Sotelo, the All New Fathom #1 will debut in stores on July 24th.

Michael Turner’s best-selling series has reached its milestone 15-year anniversary! However, Aspen Matthews’ adventure under the surface has no plans of slowing down! Following the devastating events of “The Elite Saga”, Aspen Matthews finds herself at a decisive crossroads in her life—with the memories of her past no longer weighing her down, she is finally able to set about building a new life in San Diego once more. But, being the daughter of two worlds is no easy feat—and Aspen will quickly discover the winds of change oftentimes lead directly into the perils of fate!

Wohl discusses the new series:

From the first time I ever heard Michael Turner talk about Fathom, I knew he was onto something very special and very cool. At that point, we were working on Witchblade together, and even then, I hoped that someday I’d have the opportunity to write it. And now, during the 10th Anniversary of Aspen Comics, I’ve gotten my chance, and I couldn’t be more elated!

As with all of Aspen’s “10 for 10” releases, the comic’s first issue will be just $1. Aspen will also be offering a special Aspen Reserved Edition cover for Fathom #1 featuring art by Konat and colorist Peter Steigerwald. Fans who reserve Fathom #1 by adding it to their pullbox with their local retailers will be eligible to receive the Aspen Reserved Edition of Fathom #1.

Fans who collect all ten of Aspen’s “10 for 10” Aspen Reserved Edition #1 covers each month through their local retailer will be eligible to receive the full-size Aspen “Perfect 10’s” jam poster absolutely free.

In addition to the debut issue, Aspen is also offering a Fathom #2 J. Scott Campbell Retailer Incentive cover available in August.

Review – Aspen’s Fathom Vol. 4 #8

FAV4-08a-AlexKONATI’m still relatively new to Aspen’s Fathom so it’s been a bit daunting to figure out where everything fits and who characters are. I’ve read a couple of the volumes and some of the earlier comics, and have a good sense, but not a great one (I really need to start from the beginning I think…), but as a whole I’ve been enjoying this eighth volume of Fathom.

As the Church of the Eternal Depths lies in ruin, Aspen Matthews must attempt a daring suicide mission, with the lives of her friends hanging precariously in the balance. However, when she uncovers a dark secret that lies beneath the ocean floor, Aspen realizes her own actions will endanger millions of lives–INCLUDING HER OWN!

First, I love the concept and world they’ve created for this story arc. It’s an ocean underneath a pocket of oil. And then there’s this underwater building where people who worship the Blue are housed. It’s all interesting and creative. The bad is that some of the motivations have been a bit weak, like exacting who and why the folks are in the Church, which is sort of answered in this issue. But, the story is creative and exciting and the use of water is interesting.

As expected with Aspen comics, the art is solid and has the style they’ve become known for. I like it myself and I think Fathom is some of the best work of the company. It’s their flagship title, so it better be.

Is this the best arc to start with someone who is new to the series or character? That I’m not too sure. Is this a comic you can pick up without reading the previous ones? That’s a no as well. But, for those of us who have been reading this volume, it’s a solid addition and I suggest folks take a chance and see what they’ve been missing.
