Men in Black International and Shaft Both Fail to Meet Expectations as MiB Wins the Weekend

Men in Black International

It was a bad weekend at the box office as Men in Black International and Shaft didn’t come close to even the lowest expectations. The weekend was down

Men in Black International opened with $28.5 million which is the lowest opening for the franchise by over $20 million. All three previous films opened with over $51 million. The film received a “B” CinemaScore and middling to negative reviews. The audience was 56% male and 53% aged 25 or older.

The film brought in $73.7 million from 36 markets to bring the global debut to $102 million.

With a budget of $110 million, the opening isn’t a complete disaster. The film has also earned a reported $75 million from brand deals so when added into the earnings the film will likely eke out a small profit by the time it’s all done. But, the franchise definitely doesn’t have the juice it once did.

In second place was The Secret Life of Pets 2 which dropped 49% in its second weekend to bring in an estimated $23.8 million. Domestically, the film has earned $92 million after ten days. Internationally, the film added $8.5 million for an international total of $62.5 million and an international total of $154.5 million.

Aladdin held steady in third place with an estimated $16.7 million to bring its domestic total to $263.4 million. Internationally, the film added an estimated $47.5 million for a foreign box office total of $461.4 million and a worldwide total of $724.8 million. After four weeks the film is third domestically and internationally for the year.

Dark Phoenix dropped hard to fourth place tumbling 72.6% and earning an estimated $9 million. That’s the second largest weekend drop for a film playing in over 3,500 theaters in the second weekend. The film has now earned $51.8 million domestically. The film added $24.2 million internationally bringing that total to $152.5 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $204.3 million. With a $200 million budget, the film has just barely passed it in grosses after two weeks.

Rounding out the top five was Rocketman which added $8.8 million to bring its domestic total to $66.1 million. It also added $8.5 million internationally to bring its worldwide total to over $133 million.

Just outside the top five was Shaft which came in sixth place. The film was expected to earn $15 million but could only scrape together $8.3 million. The opening day audience did give the film an “A” CinemaScore. The audience was also 54% female and 84% aged 25 years or older.

In other comic film results…

Avengers: Endgame came in at #11 earning an estimated $3.5 million domestically to bring that number to $830.5 million.

We’ll be back in an hour for a deeper dive into this year, and last year’s, comic film adaptations.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 and Dark Phoenix Top the Weekend Box Office but Both Fall Short

The Secret Life of Pets 2

While the weekend box office did better than the previous year by more than 43%, the top two films both fell short.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 topped the weekend earning an estimated $47.1 million. It opened with the second widest opening ever with 4,561 locations. The widest ever is Avengers: Endgame. That $47.1 million is half of the earnings of the original film’s $104.3 million in 2016. The studio had hoped for a $50 million opening.

The film did receive an “A-” CinemaScore from an opening crowd that was 57% female and 62% being family moviegoers.

Internationally, the film has been playing for two weeks and added 21 markets. From its 30 markets, the film earned $16 million It has numerous countries to still open through AUgust including Australia, Germany, Brazil, China, Japan, Korea, France, Spain, and Mexico.

In second place was Dark Phoenix which sowed death and destruction in its $33 million opening. It’s the first X-film to not even open with $50 million. The studio had a projection of $40-$50 million and the film couldn’t even do that. X-Men: Apocalypse opened three years ago to $65.7 million.

The film received a “B-” CinemaScore. Apocalypse received an “A-” score and that went on to earn $155.4 million domestically and $543.9 million worldwide. Dark Phoenix may struggle to reach $100 million domestically.

Things were a bit better internationally. The film opened in all markets except Japan and earned an estimated $107 million. It opens in Japan on June 21.

The film reportedly cost $200 million to make and has very mixed reviews with a 23% from citics and 64% from the audience on RottenTomatoes, 6/10 on IMDB, 43% on Metacritic, and 74% of Google users liking it.

There is a chance that audiences are ignoring the film partially due to the mixed reviews but also with the impending reboot now that Disney has bought Fox and absorbed the X-Men franchise.

Aladdin took third place with an estimated $34.5 million. Domestically it has earned $232.4 million and internationally the film is up to $604.9 million worldwide. The live action remake beats the original animated film in every way, which earned $217.4 million domestically, $286.7 million internationally, and $504.1 million worldwide.

In fourth place was Godzilla: King of the Monsters which saw a monstrous drop of 67.5% from the previous weekend. It earned an estimated $15.5 million in its second week. The original film in 2014 dropped 67% so this is seeing a similar play out. If that’s holds, King of the Monsters should earn about $100 million domestically. It opened around half of the original and the original earned about $200 million. Internationally, the film brought in $47.1 million to bring that total to $213.7 million and $292.3 million worldwide.

Rounding out the top five was Rocketman which earned an estimated $14 million domestically and $13 million internationally. It now has crossed the $100 million mark after ten days with $101.8 million worldwide.

In other comic releases…

Avengers: Endgame dropped two spots to #8 earning an estimated $4.8 million. Domestically, the film stands at $824.4 million.

Captain Marvel dropped one spot from the precious week coming in at #21. The film added $156,000 to its domestic total to bring that to $426.4 million after 14 weeks.

We’ll be back in an hour for a deeper dive into this year and last year’s comic films.

Godzilla is King of the Box Office

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Godzilla: King of the Monsters topped the weekend box office, though came in at the lower end of studio expectations. Rocketman and Ma both beat their studio’s expectations in their debuts.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters debuted with an estimated $49 million. The film had expectations to earn $50-55 million and was short of the $93.2 million opening for the 2014 reboot and Kong: Skull Island’s $61 million in 2017. The film received a “B+” CinemaScore from opening audiences which was 67% male and 59% were aged 25 or older.

Internationally, the Godzilla: King of the Monsters debuted in 75 markets with $140 million for a worldwide debut over $179 million. That’s a bit over the film’s reported budget of $170 million.

Aladdin dropped to second in its second week with an estimated $42.3 million to bring its domestic total to $185 million. It also added $78.3 million internationally to bring that total to $261 million and a global total around $446 million.

Rocketman debuted in third place with an estimated $25 million. The film was expected to earn around $18-20 million so this is well ahead of expectations. Audiences gave it an “A-” CinemaScore with a crowd that was 51% female and 55% of the crowd aged 30 or older. The film is in its second week internationally adding 39 new openings and earning $19.2 million for an international total of $31.2 million.

In fourth place was Ma which earned an estimated $18.2 million. With just a $5 million budget, that’s a solid opening. The film received a “B-” CinemaScore with an audience that was 53% female and 53$ aged 25 or older. African Americans made up 36% of the audience, a majority. The film also earned $2.8 million internationally from 31 markets.

John Wick: Chapter 3 rounded out the top five with an estimated $11.1 million to bring its domestic total to $125.8 million. The film also earned an estimated $12.7 million internationally from 77 markets to bring that total to $95.9 million.

And, when it comes to comic related films…

Avengers: Endgame came in at #6 and added $6.7 million to its total to bring it to $815.5 million domestically. The film has now earned $2.713 billion. That puts it just $75 million shy of the all time record holder Avatar which earned $2.788 billion.

Captain Marvel slipped just one spot to #18. It added an estimated $170,000 to its domestic total and bringing it to $426.2 million.

We’ll be back in an hour for a deeper look at 2018 and 2019’s comic releases.

Disney’s Aladdin Takes Off at the Memorial Day Weekend Box Office

Aladdin

Disney’s Aladdin was the top film of the weekend box office earning an estimated $86.1 million. The film is expected to do somewhere around $105 million for the four-day weekend though some predict it’ll be over $110 million. The film received an “A” CinemaScore from opening audiences. The crowd was 54% female and 54% age 25 or older.

The film also debuted internationally in every major market other than Japan (it opens there June 7). It earned an estimated $121 million to bring its weekend total to $207.1 million.

Aladdin bumped John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum to second place where it earned an estimated $24.4 million. It’s expected to be a bit over $30 million for the four-day weekend. It has earned over $100 million after ten days of release. It’s already the highest grossing film of the franchise so there shouldn’t be a surprise we’re getting a fourth film in two years exactly as we predicted. Internationally, the film earned an estimated $24.8 million to bring that total to $74.4 million for a worldwide total over $175 million.

In third place was Avengers: Endgame which added an estimated $16.8 million domestically over the three days and will be around $22 million for the four day holiday. The film crossed $800 million domestically, only the second to do so. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the first. Internationally, the film added $15.3 million from 54 markets. It’s now about $111 million behind Avatar to become the highest grossing film worldwide of all time.

In fourth place was Pokemon: Detective Pikachu which added $13.3 million over the weekend to bring its domestic total to $116.1 million. It’s expected to earn about $17.5 million over the four days. Internationally, the film added $24.3 million from 72 markets to its total to bring that to $236 million.

Brightburn debuted in fifth place with an estimated $7.5 million for the three days which is a bit under the $8 million expectation. It’ll earn around $9 million for the four day weekend. While the film received a “C+” CinemaScore and played to an audience 58% male and 64% age 25 and older, the film is already a success with a budget of just $6 million. Internationally, the film brought in $4.5 million from 50 markets. In one weekend it’ll have about double its budget.

In other comic film news…

Captain Marvel came in at #18 adding an estimated $359,000 to its domestic total to bring that to $425.8 million.

Shazam! still charted coming in at #20 with an estimated $268,000 adding to its domestic total. That now stands at $138.5 million.

Movie Review: Aladdin

Aladdin 2019

“I can show you the world…” In a world where such classic animated films exist, it’s a relevant question to ask what you get from simply remaking something as beloved and classic and Disney’s 1992 Aladdin. With Director Guy Ritchie on board and Will Smith taking the place as the iconic blue genie, can they deliver something worthwhile?

Yes. Yes they can.

The remake updates the not-so-old film in a lot of ways. In fact, this film is so not-so-old that I can remember seeing it opening weekend at the old Scera Theater in Orem, Utah amid a massive throng of children and hearing those opening words of “Arabian Nights” describing its setting as “where they cut off your ears if they don’t like your face– it’s barbaric, but, hey, it’s home.” This line was almost immediately redubbed and scrubbed from future soundtrack and home video releases to something that didn’t imply that Arabs are barbaric, so it’s not like Aladdin hasn’t needed some brushing up from day 1.

But perhaps what is most refreshing is its elevation of Princess Jasmine to, arguably, the main character of the film. While Aladdin still goes through his growth and character journey, so too does Jasmine grapple with her place in a patriarchal kingdom where she feels she is actually the most qualified person to rule. She’s not wrong, and Jasmine basically is coming for Elsa as the most overtly feminist member of the Disney pantheon. A new song added for the film, “Speechless,” is performed to perfection by Naomi Scott. If this song isn’t nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars, I’ll eat a DVD of Aladdin.

[Minor spoiler ahead, skip to next paragraph if you don’t want to know] One of the most interesting ways they updated this and cranked the feminism up to 11 is a single line delivered by Aladdin in a new scene immediately post the “A Whole New World” magic carpet ride. Looking down at Agrabah, Jasmine talks about wanting to help all of the city’s residents. She wants to be listened to and help rule because she knows she can do a better job than anyone else. She turns to Prince Ali for his opinion, and he delivers one of the most astounding and wonderful lines of any film this year: “Why does it matter what I think?” Her self worth isn’t bound up in his approval, and he knows it. Aladdin: secret feminist ally? You read it here first.

But what so many people actually want to talk about is Genie and Will Smith. He’s actually pretty good, especially when they let him be charming and do his own thing. When he’s going through the motions of trying to deliver on the beloved performance of Robin Williams, it’s just really hard to do that. Smith does his best, and the results are decent. But most of Smith’s best moments are when he is in a human-esque form incognito in the palace. He has (limited) agency, desires, and even a romantic subplot to himself? (With the incredibly charming Nasim Pedrad from SNL who plays one of Jasmine’s handmaids and is almost worth the price of admission herself.)

Ritchie’s directing here is crisp and workmanlike, but eschews so much of the visual style and kineticism some of his other films have. That means “One Jump” becomes a parkour-inspired mini-heist of sorts, but most of the musical numbers can’t quite compete with the originals. The direction is similar to Ritchie’s recent The Man from UNCLE in that he doesn’t leave a lot of fingerprints, but the end result is pretty fun. An added dance scene that is straight out of Bollywood is particularly fun and a great bonus.

Still, there are a few moments that land a little poorly. This seems largely due to wanting to keep Smith caged and closely working on aping Williams. The genius of Robin Williams was they just let him riff in the sound booth and then animated around the fun he brought to the script. So some of the things are a little cringey, but it’s likely to make parents roll their eyes as they fondly remember The Fresh Prince and the animated original Aladdin, but that kids will enjoy.

So why remake a classic? This brings a fresh feminist take to a movie that didn’t need a ton of updating, so it’s just the right touch. And while Will Smith isn’t Robin Williams, he’s still immensely watchable but is outshined by the excellent leads playing Aladdin and especially Jasmine. Take your family and experience a whole new world of what Aladdin can be.

30% GOP, 19% Dems Want to Bomb Aladdin

Public Policy Polling is known for adding goofy/fun/trick questions to their very real polls. In a recent poll measuring opinions of Republican Presidential candidates as well as thoughts on recent issues, PPP added a question that has a lot of folks shaking their heads.

After series questions such as if Islam should be legal or illegal, or thoughts on the World War II Japanese internment, the polling firm asking if individuals supported or opposed bombing Agrabah?

Agrabah

Agrabah is the city in Arabia that the 1992 Disney film Aladdin takes place in. Yes, folks are willing to bomb animated cities to… well not sure.

If you think this is made up, the PPP tweeted about the poll, even pointing out the question:

Even emphasizing this isn’t The Onion, the satirical news site.

Being fair, the polling firm also asked Democrats.

Having fun with it, neoconservative Bill Kristol, an architect of the Iraq invasion, joked on Twitter bombing wouldn’t be enough, and there’d be a need for ground troops.

We’re awaiting the evidence of Agrabah’s WMDs before we have an opinion.
