There’s been a few graphic novels being released that I’ve been looking forward to this year and this week sees the release of one of them (and honestly a lot of solid graphic novels and trade paperbacks). The Fifth Beatle stands shoulders above the rest of the releases not only for its excellent storytelling, but also the amazing artwork.

The Fifth Beatle tells the story of Brian Epstein, the manager of the Beatles who got them their record contract and really helped build the band. The graphic novel covers his life and early death, especially focusing on his being an outcast as Jewish and Gay during this time period.

This is an amazing piece of history in an entertaining graphic novel form and absolutely a must buy for both fans of comics and music.

Top Pick: The Wake #5 (Vertigo) – Brilliant mini series that reminds me why Snyder was tapped to helm Batman. Against all odds, artist Sean Murphy makes fabled sea creatures terrifying.

Afterlife with Archie #2 (Archie Comics) – Eerie, adult, and unquivocally fantastic. I’m not sure how long this run is slated for, but after seeing the sales, I would hope Archie Comics digs in for the long haul.

Pathfinder Special #1 (Dynamite) – I don’t know if it’s because of their Goblin series or the fact that I really want to try Paizo’s Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, but there’s something appealing about this special.

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi – Force War #1 (Dark Horse) – It won’t come close to Brian Wood’s current series, but it’s tough to pass up a Star Wars first issue.

Top Pick: The Wake #5 (Vertigo) – Scott Snyder’s amazing series is backed up by Sean Murphy’s awesome art. That ending of the last issue has me on the edge of my seat to see what happens next.

A1 Annual 2013 (Titan Comics) – One of the best anthologies on the market gets super-sized with more awesomeness. Pick this up and find out what you’ve been missing.

Afterlife with Archie #2 (Archie Comics) – The first issue was amazing and the second is just as good. If you love horror or zombies, pick this one up.

Buzzkill #3 (Dark Horse) – The series about a hero who gets his powers from drugs and alcohol has been unique and entertaining.

Imagine Agents #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue of the series blew me away. An awesome debut and I can’t wait for the second issue.

Top Graphic Novel/Tradepaperback: The Fifth Beatle (Dark Horse) – see above why this should be on everyone’s buy list.

Cute Girl Network (First Second) – A fantastic graphic novel about relationships, a nice change from the usual comic series.

Takio Vol. 2 (Icon) – I’ve loved this Brian Michael Bendis series about two kids with super powers.

Top Pick: Batwoman #25 (DC Comics) – Yay, new creative team! Or is it: Ugh, new creative team… I guess we’ll find out.

Afterlife with Archie #2 (Archie Comics) – I’m surprised to be saying this, but I love an Archie Comic. The debut was scary and fun and beautiful, and I have no reason to believe the second issue will be any different.

Sex Criminals #3 (Image) – Each issue so far has delved into the respective back stories of the two main characters. I hope this issue sees Susie and Jon working together.

Sheltered #5 (Image) – In this issue outsiders come to camp, and I can’t wait to see how Lucas reacts.

The Wake #5 (Vertigo/DC) – After a month off I’m ready to dive (get it?) back into this underwater horror story.

Zero #3 (Image) – I absolutely love the fact that this issue switches artists every month. It’s like a series debut every time, and that keeps it fresh and exciting.

Top Pick: Harley Quinn #0 (DC Comics) – Amanda Conner is a fantastic artist, but this debut-before-the-debut issue will feature a self-conscious Harley Quinn choosing her artist from among an award-winning list. Harley Quinn is a much-beloved and now-classic character, so it’ll be great to see what the new era of DC comics will do with her in her own series.

Daredevil #33 (Marvel) – duh, guys, it’s freaking Daredevil by Waid and Samnee, so pick it up before they leave us. Because the end is near.

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi – Force War #1 (Dark Horse) – This continues the Dawn of the Jedi group of titles in which Dark Horse has built a canon for the early history of the Jedi during the era of the Rakata’s Infinite Empire, and war is about to break out. This is Star Wars history in the literal making.

Superior Spider-Man Annual #1 (Marvel) Spidey comics like to mock themselves, and there’s no better measure of that than an annual marked as “this one counts.” Aside from the quipping, I’m glad to see a Superior Spidey annual, and how could any Superior reader pass this up?

Uncanny X-Men #14 (Marvel) “Battle of the Atom” was a pretty good event, all things told. But what’s most intriguing is the remixing of teams and changing of allegiances, perhaps most interestingly for the Uncanny. Also, I’m trying to avoid drawing attention to anything by Brian Wood for now, even if I’ll still be reading Conan and X-Men this week.

Pick(s) of the Week: Manifest Destiny #1 and many more

Image Comics has been on a roll with solid debut series and this week is no exception with two different releases from the publisher. Out of the two though, it’s Manifest Destiny that sticks out with it’s weird history take on the explorers Lewis and Clark.

In 1804, Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark set out on an expedition to explore the uncharted American frontier. This is the story of what they discovered lurking in the wilds…

Skybound’s newest original series unveils the monsters of the western frontier in the adventure of a lifetime by writer Chris Dingess and up-and-coming artist Matthew Roberts.

Having read the first issue, it’s worth checking out.

Top Pick: Manifest Destiny #1 (Image Comics/Skybound) – I’ve been awaiting this twisted Lewis and Clark series for awhile now. In a retelling of the familiar American frontier story, our adventurous heroes face more than just poison ivy and brown bears…

Afterlife with Archie #2 (Archie Comics) – I’ve never been a fan of Archie Comics…but this series is phenomenal. Archie finally treats adult readers like adults and delivers a quality horror series. If you won’t take my word for it, check out Brett’s review of the first issue.

Batman #25 (DC) – After donning the cape and cowl, Bruce Wayne is learning what he must become to protect Gotham as the Zero Year arc continues. This new take on Batman’s origin story (and of his enemies) is a great read.

The Other Dead #3 (IDW Publishing) – I know I’ve been out of the loop lately, but how am I just hearing about this? Mankind versus a global zombie animal infection? Yes please.

Umbral #1 (Image Comics) – The first issue of another one of Image Comics’ new fall series looks like an interesting fantasy-esque read. Having just read and reviewed Criminal Macabre, I’m digging Christopher Mitten’s illustrations.

Top Pick: Afterlife With Archie #2 ( Archie Comics) – The first issue blew me away and out of everything coming out this week, where Archie comics allows this series to go is the most interesting thing to me. The first issue just met every expectation I had and I expect no less from the second.

Garth Ennis’ Red Team #6 (Dynamite Entertainment) – I love a good crooked cop story and this is it. Just a great comic that I’d love to see on the small screen. The descent of this cop squad into crime and questionable activities has been gripping so far.

Manifest Destiny #1 (Image Comics) – You can read above as to why this makes the list.

Superior Foes of Spider-Man #5 ( Marvel Comics) – Writer Nick Spencer has taken this group of C-list villains and made them interesting and sympathetic. I want more of this!

Unity #1 (Valiant Entertainment) – Valiant continues to connect the dots of their various series and a lot of that is happening here. The first issue kicks in the doors with an action filled debut.

Top TPB/Graphic Novel: Bandette HC Vol. 1 (Monkeybrain/Dark Horse) – The digital series gets collected and printed courtesy of Dark Horse and you now have no excuse to not read this fantastic digital first comic.

Top Pick: Batman #25 (DC) – The last issue was over sized, gorgeous (particularly the coloring), and totally changed the status quo in Gotham City. So far I’m loving how expansive Zero Year is, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Rocket Girl #2 (Image Comics) – The debut was a little inconsistent, but the premise has promise (see what I did there?), and I love Amy Reeder’s art. I’m willing to give this series some time to find its feet.

Savage Wolverine #11 (Marvel Comics) – This one’s a bit of a wild card. I’ve heard that Jock’s story line has been a little meandering, but I adore his art and on this book its been expansive and appropriately otherworldly (as it’s a Wolverine story set on another planet). And those covers, man . . . Wow.

Umbral #1 (Image Comics) – This series comes from Antony Johnston and Christopher Mitten, and while I’ve never read any of Wasteland I hear its excellent, so I’m looking forward to their new project. Plus, it’s horror, which is one of my favorite comic genres.

Afterlife with Archie #1 Sells Out & Gets a 2nd Printing

Afterlife with Archie is a hit for Archie Comics. Not only has it received praise but it also is a hit with fans selling out at the distributor in 5 hours. The new ongoing series written by Harvey award winning writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Eisner award winning artist Francesco Francavilla will be immediately going back for a 2^nd printing. Series artist Francavilla created a special cover for the 2^nd printing of Afterlife With Archie #1. The debut issue was the fastest selling Archie comic of all time and is Archie’s first direct market only series ever, taking the Archie characters in a dark, horror inspired direction.

I expect the second printing to receive continued interest as the comic was just featured in Entertainment Weekly and other mainstream media. You can read our review here.

Review: Afterlife With Archie #1

This is how the end of the world begins… Harvey Award-winning writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Eisner-winning artist Francesco Francavilla take Archie and the gang where they’ve never been before-to the grave and back! A horrific accident sets off a series of grim events and Sabrina the Teenage Witch must try to repair the unspeakable evil her spell has unleashed. Gasp in horror as Riverdale faces an impending zombie Arch-pocalypse in this brand-new, spine-tingling ongoing series-but be warned, kiddies, this one’s not for the faint of heart!

When I heard the announcement of this series, I expected the worst, a campy lighthearted story. Boy would I have been off. Instead you get Archie meets Shaun of the Dead, a serious zombie tale with some winks and nods concerning the source material. They warned us this series was for adults and holy shit were they right.

Mining some dark material, this adult version of Archie sees a dead dog lead to a spell going wrong and zombies being unleashed. The whole issue had my jaw dropped as to how far they were willing to go with the story, and what they’ve put together is an amazing zombie comic and an Archie story I WANT to read. Can we please get a “modern and updated” Archie series now?

On top of the great story is the amazing art of Francesco Francavilla, an artist who has proven time and time again why his work is some of the most wanted in the industry. His talents are obvious and his style is perfect for a series such as this. We’ve seen him do the art for numerous pulp comics, like his Dark Horse series The Black Beetle, and that style fits the zombie genre perfectly. We get a look that evokes some of the earliest, and creepiest, zombie and horror movies.It evokes the classic Eerie and Creepy, and it’s amazing. It’s perfect for the series and I can’t imagine anyone else doing it.

I went into this first issue with some series reservations and walked out with one of my favorite debut issues of the year and a series that’s on my monthly “read” list.
