Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

andre the giant life and legendWednesdays is new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in. Below are ten suggestions of comics and graphic novels you should spend some extra time checking out.

Top Pick: Andre the Giant: Life & Legend (First Second) – I remember watching wrestler Andrew the Giant growing up in the 80s. This graphic novel is a condensed version of his life touching on the important things that shaped the man, and giving us some insight into such a fascinating individual.

Afterlife with Archie #5 (Archie Comics) – Afterlife with Archie has been an amazing spin on the Archie characters throwing in zombies, death, and anything goes. I never thought I’d be so excited over the Archie characters, but I can’t wait for each issue’s release of this series.

Bee and Puppycat #1 (BOOM! Studios/KaBOOM!) – A new all ages title from KaBOOM!, and imprint of BOOM!. The Kickstarter hit has come to comic form, with a magical tale that’s fun for the whole family.

Fubar: Better Red Than Dead (Alterna Comics) – Another zombie tale, this indie series is a great take on alternate history. Everything I’ve read from these guys have been amazing and I can’t recommend anything they’ve done enough.

Lumberjanes #2 (BOOM! Studios/BOOM! Box) – The hit series just keeps getting better. This one from BOOM!’s imprint BOOM! Box is about a group of girls at a summer camp where things are a bit… weird. It’s exactly what we need more of in comics.

Rust Vol. 3: Death of Rocket Boy (BOOM! Studios/Archaia) – If you haven’t read the first two Rust graphic novels, you’ve been missing out. This third volume, we’ll hopefully find out a bit more concerning the mysterious Jet. Each volume’s story has been entertaining, and the art is amazing.

Starlight #3 (Image Comics) – Mark Millar’s riff on Flash Gordon has been fantastic each issue so far. He’s hit all the right notes with each issue’s release, mixing in action, while tugging at our heart strings.

This One Summer (First Second) – Another graphic novel from First Second, Rose and Windy are summer friends whose families have visited Awago Beach for as long as they can remember. But this year is different, and they soon find themselves tangled in teen love and family crisis

United States of Murder Inc. #1 (Marvel/Icon) – In this oversized first issue, you will discover a world in which the families of organized crime never lost their stranglehold on the United States. From Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Avon Oeming.

The Walking Dead #127 (Skybound) All Out War has ended…. where do we go from there?

Review: Afterlife With Archie #4

alwarchie4What happens when the nightmare that is Riverdale goes from bad to worse? The idyllic town has been overrun by a horde of flesh-eating zombies, and everyman Archie Andrews is the world’s last hope. But is he enough? The series, one of my favorite recent debuts, continues in a fourth issue that’s beyond shocking and a little heartbreaking.

Writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Francesco Francavilla, spin a cinematic horror tale that blends the iconic characters of Archie Comics and the heart-pounding elements of a Romero zombie film to create a modern, menacing and pulpy epic. It’s all there. The threat of imminent death. The loss of love ones. Pulse pounding action. Yeah, that does say Archie on the cover.

The creative team as usual knocks the issue out of the park. The comic feels like something I should be watching up on the big screen and features solid pacing and a visual style that reminds me of the classic zombie and horror movies of years past. This is the best creative team on the market putting out a series that surprises me with each issue. When I first read about this series, I rolled my eyes thinking it’d be a fun goof. Instead we got a top notch horror series featuring the undead and folks dying all over.

This issue has Archie rushing home, as he started to do in the previous one, in order to try to find his parents during the zombie apocalypse. The events he goes through had my jaw hanging open as I couldn’t believe what Aguirre-Sacasa has happen. It’s some pretty shocking events and some that gets you choked up. I don’t want to ruin any of it, but this is a series that keeps me on my toes, I have no idea what’ll happen each issue.

When you head to your shop this week, brace yourself for the bloody, gut-wrenching fourth chapter of the “Escape from Riverdale” storyline and discover who makes it out alive and who ends up as Hot Dog’s mangled chew toy.

The end of the world is here… and it’s beyond entertaining. Afterlife With Archie should be a part of everyone’s pull list.

Featuring the all-star team of Harvey Award winning  writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Eisner Award winning artist Francesco FrancavillaAfterlife With Archie #4 spins a cinematic horror tale that blends the iconic characters of Archie Comics and the heart-pounding elements of a Romero zombie film to create a modern, menacing and pulpy epic.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

BOOM_Evil_Empire_001_AIt’s a new week of comics and there’s a lot to choose from. Some of the Graphic Policy staff has put our heads together to pick some books we think you’d be doing yourself a favor in checking out. For this week I looked and Andrew’s choices and decided to not double up (I’d of picked a few of his) that way we’re giving you the skinny on a whole bunch of books so you have the best idea of what to check out!

Andrew

Top Pick: Moon Knight #1 (Marvel) – I’ve been looking forward to this number one issue since Marvel first announced it. Though it’s been awhile since I’ve picked up a Moon Knight book, he was one of my favorite characters growing up, so I hope it meets expectations.

Afterlife with Archie #4 (Archie) – I’m pretty confident this is unanimously revered by the team at Graphic Policy headquarters. I’m still blown away that Archie comics took the chance on a mature, violent, and dark Archie series. Exceptional.

Lobster Johnson Get the Lobster #2 (Dark Horse) – I was slightly disappointed with the previous issue (not enough Lobster), but this one redeems the entire series with a possible origin story, which LJ fans have yet to see.

Veil #1 (Dark Horse) – Greg Rucka’s new woman-wakes-up-nude-in-subway-with-powers series looks trippy…and good.

Trade Paperback/Graphic Novel: TMNT Villains Microseries TP Vol. 2 (IDW) – I’ve been on a mutant ninja turtles bender the last couple weeks, so this is a must read for me. It’s the second compilation of villain origin stories, and this one includes Shredder…yes please.

Brett

Top Pick: Evil Empire #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Max Bemis’ new series from BOOM! that takes us through a society as it crumbles. It’s a fascinating story that I was so excited about, I made sure I could interview Max about it.

Rogue Trooper #1 (IDW Publishing) – The classic series is back courtesy of IDW!

She-Hulk #2 (Marvel) – I loved the first issue written by Charles Soule that perfectly mixed humor, law and superheroing.

Starlight #1 (Image Comics) – Mark Millar’s new series that pays homage to Flash Gordan.

Wild Blue Yonder #4 (IDW Publishing) – It’s been a while since the third issue, but that hasn’t made my anticipation diminish for this series that’s fun, and beautiful to look at.

Trade Paperback/Graphic Novel: X-Men: Days of Future Past (Marvel) – Catch the classic tale before the summer movie!
