Exclusive Preview: Aristotle: A Graphic Biography – an entertaining and educational look at the life and ideas of a pivotal figure in philosophy and history

Dive into the life and learn about the pivotal figure Artistotle in Aristotle: A Graphic Biography. The graphic novel is out on Tuesday, October 8 from Abrams ComicArt. Little is known about the early life of Aristotle, the polymath whose work serves as a cultural cornerstone of modern philosophy, so Alecos Papadatos, the artist behind the critically acclaimed, award-winning, New York Times #1 bestselling graphic novel Logicomix, and writer and educator Tassos Apostolidis follow a trail of clues to paint a picture of the great man and his philosophy in this captivating and informative graphic novel.

The son of a renowned Macedonian physician, Aristotle pursues his studies in Athens and becomes one of Plato’s favorite disciples. A great scholar, he even serves as Alexander the Great, Ptolemy, and Cassander’s personal tutor. For many, that would be the high point of their career, but Aristotle goes on to found his own school, the Lyceum. There, he transmits his knowledge and passion to any student wishing to embark on an intellectual and philosophical journey.

Most of Aristotle’s works that have endured to this day are thought to be lecture aids for his students. The fact that these have had such an astounding influence on every school of Western thought despite likely not being intended for publication speaks to Aristotle’s monumental legacy which Papadatos and Apostolidis carefully reconstruct in an illuminating graphic novel.

Aristotle: A Graphic Biography has already been published in France, Belgium, Greece, Germany, Portugal, China, Turkey, and South Korea. Now Abrams ComicArts will publish the 216-page hardcover in bookstores on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 and in comic shops on October 9, 2024.

Cormac McCarthy’s The Road: A Graphic Novel Adaptation is one of the best releases this year

The story of a nameless father and son trying to survive with their humanity intact in a postapocalyptic wasteland where Earth’s natural resources have been diminished, and some survivors are left to raise others for meat, The Road is one of Cormac McCarthy’s bleakest and most prescient novels.

The story of a nameless father and son trying to survive with their humanity intact in a postapocalyptic wasteland where Earth’s natural resources have been diminished, and some survivors are left to raise others for meat, The Road is one of Cormac McCarthy’s bleakest and most prescient novels. This first official graphic novel adaptation of McCarthy’s work is illustrated by acclaimed French cartoonist Manu Larcenet, who ably transforms the world depicted by McCarthy’s spare and brutal prose into stark ink drawings that add an additional layer to this haunting tale of family love and human perseverance. Cormac McCarthy personally approved the making of this book before his death, and the adaptation bears the approval of the McCarthy estate.

Thomas Piketty’s Capital & Ideology gets an intriguing graphic novel adaptation

Praised by Piketty himself as a “magnificent adaptation” of his original book, this graphic novel adaptation is perfect for anyone looking to understand the wealth gap and why society is the way it is today.

Claire Alet and Benjamin Adam make the original work’s ideas more accessible through the addition of a family saga. Jules, the main character, is born at the end of the 19th century. He is a person of private means, a privileged figure representative of a profoundly unequal society obsessed with property.

Alex Ross and Steve Darnall talk Uncle Sam: Special Election Edition

“Alex Ross’ work is really like outstanding community theater” – Steve Darnall and Alex Ross join me to talk about the rerelease of their groundbreaking policital graphic novel, Uncle Sam as well as Alex’s Fantastic Four: Full Circle.

“Timed for this year’s election, UNCLE SAM by Steve Darnall and Alex Ross makes its return after nearly a decade of being out of print. It’s a vibrant, hallucinatory tour of modern America—the story of a star–spangled, ragged vagrant named Sam who is guided by the voices in his head and his own fractured memories. Absorbed by history–traveling visions of America’s dark past, Uncle Sam struggles to remember his true identity and piece together the scattered clues of his own experiences in this deep and thoughtful look at America’s checkered past.”

Alex Ross studied illustration at the American Academy of Art, then honed his craft as a storyboard artist before entering the comics field. His miniseries Marvels opened a wider acceptance for painted comics. In 1996 he produced the equally successful Kingdom Come for DC Comics. Ross is the writer/artist of the award winning Fantastic Four: Full Circle.

Steve Darnall first worked with Alex Ross on the Human Torch story that served as the inspiration for the award-winning 1993 series Marvels. Steve served as a consultant on the movie Being the Ricardos and Ken Burns’s documentary Country Music. He is also the editor of Nostalgia Digest magazine, and the host of two weekly radio shows dedicated to the golden age of radio. Nostalgia Digest

Uncle Sam is as amazing and thought provoking now as when it was first released decades ago
