Garland has revealed to the world that he has a bizarre button implanted in his chest that gives him genius-level creative powers every time it is pushed. His fame has skyrocketed, but he’s already attracting unwanted attention: a 1980s one-hit wonder turned witch will do whatever she can to steal the button, even if it means cutting it right out of Garland’s chest!

Pick of the Week – I, Vampire #2

Joshua Hale Fialkov was tasked with one of the more difficult tasks in the DCnU, take vampires and integrate them in a non-silly way to the DC universe.  A task made more difficult as out of the big two, DC is not the one I’d associate with vampires.  But, what Fialkov brilliantly did in the first issue of I, Vampire was give us a series that stands on it’s own two legs.  Vampires are just the dark mirror image to the titans that fly around in the DC world.  Their the step children who wonder why they haven’t inherited the Earth.  While his series will eventually weave into the main DCU, and it’ll be interesting to see if it’s dark tone fits, Fialkov has shown in one issue he knows what he’s doing.  I, Vampire was one of the highlights of it’s week’s release and one of the top books on all the 52 DC released.

  • I, Vampire #2 – See above
  • 27: Second Set #2 – It’s easy to promote the series due to how nice writer Charles Soule is, but in reality the series would stand on it’s own no matter.  It’s that damn good and original.  The first issue dialed back the mystical elements and focused on a star starting from scratch.  The human touch made it stand out as a second volume I could easily get behind.
  • Voodoo #2 – The first issue was caught up in the DC brouhaha, but I really enjoyed the series as it had a spy feel to it and I’m still unsure who the hero really is.
  • Wolverine and the X-Men #1 – Wolverine takes his crew and heads East to start a new academy to teach the future generations of mutants.  This is the first major launch in the “X” regenesis, here’s crossing my fingers it was worth it.
  • The Walking Dead #90 – Do I really need to say why this is a definite bet as a top read for the week?

NYCC 11 – First Thoughts

As always, I had an amazing time at a comic book convention.  While I go to check out the latest releases and the new talent in Artist’s Alley, it’s the friendships I’ve made that makes it worth it (sappy I know).  The 2011 New York Comic Con was fantastic and seemed about a quarter to 50% bigger this year than last.

While the floor was amazing, the convention rooms were a bit packed and there were quite a few panels I wasn’t able to get into (bummer).  Hopefully that gets fixed next year.  The people attending were fantastic with great costumes and attitudes that made it fun for everyone. The displays weren’t as impressive, I saw most at San Diego earlier this year.  But, I got to see my name on the cover of Archaia‘s Critical Millennium hard cover, I giggled every time I saw it.

Here’s the checklist of the thoughts on top of my head:

  • Always great seeing Charles Soule and Len Wallace (and Jessica), good friends and great talents.  I especially had fun sitting behind Charle’s table and selling some of his comics for a bit (27 and Strongman).  Also chatting with Drew Gaska as always was fun, some day we’ll figure out a time for a radio interview.
  • Fantastic to hang out with Chip “Cuddles” Mosher and get to know the comiXology crew.  They’re an upcoming tech company everyone should be watching.
  • I bumped in BOOM! Studios and Ross Ritchie and some of his team.  Such nice folks.
  • The CBLDF deserves your support people!  Get involved!
  • I still don’t get anime and manga but the GEN Manga folks were so nice.
  • I got to meet a great talent Palle Schmidt and can’t wait to spotlight him more.  So smart and interesting to talk to.  He opened my eyes on a few things I’ve covered with a better perspective.
  • The Reed Pop crew do an amazing job putting together shows.
  • Mel and Archaia, Filip and Top Cow are class acts, so happy to see them every show.

Best items I returned home with besides the stacks of comics and graphic novels to read…

  • A new guitar pic for Charles Soule‘s 27 in honor of the launch of the second volume
  • I finally bought show exclusives including Hasbro‘s Hulk and the Spidey/Fireman Mini-mate
  • I got Spidey Mega Blocks!
  • DC had one of the oddest promotions, a light up Kryptonite ice cube to promote Smallville.
  • I grabbed both AKA video games, such a creative promotion.

And that’s it for convention season for me…. until 2012.

27 Second Set #1 CoverI gushed over the first volume of Charle Soule‘s 27.  The series is about a rock star who wants to make it through his 27th birthday.   You see, all the great ones have died at that age.  Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin and most recently Amy Winehouse.  The first series ran towards the mystical side of things, it definitely wasn’t what I was expecting, but it was solid.  Here’s what the official description for the first issue.

The next, new reader-friendly chapter in the 27 saga begins HERE. Almost a year after the events of 27: FIRST SET, Will Garland, down-on-his-luck rock star, is desperate to recapture his lost fame. How far will he go, and will he encounter more cosmic craziness and intense action on the way? Answers: very far indeed, and absolutely. But on the plus side – groupies!

The fantastic thing about 27 Second Set #1 is Soule’s focus on Garland the person and his struggle.  Like the music he’s now playing, the focus of the comic is personal and in a way, the series is muted, matching the amazing art by Renzo Podesta.  The first issue completely focuses on Garland and his attempt to work his way back into the spotlight.  He’s doing it the hard way, using his talent and hard work to get there.  You can’t help by cheer for him and feel bad about the real world state of the music industry.

The ending of the issue sets up the conflict to come, and my guess is future issues won’t be quite as focused on Garland the person as the first, but if they have the heart of the first one, it won’t matter.  Much like I want to do for Garland the character, I’m cheering for the series.  Amazing story, amazing art, there’s everything here to cheer for.
