Preview: Sins and Secrets Revealed in Origin II #3!

This February, writer Kieron Gillen and artist Adam Kubert peel back another layer in Wolverine’s shadowy past – and today, Marvel is pleased to present a preview of Origin II #3! Witness the very first meeting of the mysterious mutant and the man who would become one of his greatest enemies – the malevolent Mr. Sinister! Broken and savage, the clawed mutant has been pulled back into the world of civilization – by force! Brutally beaten and held captive, the ferocious first “X-Man” is forcibly experimented on by Nathaniel Essex and his Marauders.  And the only man who can save him is…Creed?!

But amid the horrors visited upon him, James Howlett may find the one thing he thought lost forever – his humanity. At some point the Wolverine must choose: is he man or beast? What shocking revelations lie in the untold story of Wolverine’s past?

Review: Origin II #1

Origin_II_1_CoverOrigin II is a sequel to Marvel’s controversial series that peeled back the at that point unknown, and confusing, history of their cash-cow Wolverine. This five-part series comes to us by the talented team of writer Kieron Gillen andartist  Adam Kubert. Promising another unknown chapter in the character’s history, it’s hinted as “one that shapes the hero he was destined to become.”

Set a few years after the events of OriginOrigin II finds James Howlett running with the wolves…until something unexpected brings him back into the world he left behind. We’ll follow the first X-Man as he finds his way back to civilization and runs afoul of someone Sinister. Someone who has just discovered mutantkind for the first time. Plus, we’ll discover the shocking secret behind James’ greatest foe! Now he must choose: is he man or is he beast?

I only briefly checked out the original series. While I was ambivalent about learning more of Wolverine’s origin, the fact this was one of the few comics to be released during Christmas was enough for me to check it out. Plus, its creative team is a solid one and I wanted to check out at least the first issue and see what they could put together. I have to say, I was pretty impressed with the first issue.

The issue would be silent if not for the internal monologue throughout. You get a good idea of where Wolverine/Howlett is at this point in his life, literally running with wolves. And through this one issue, you also get a sense of why he is the way he is. The struggles he goes through every day now. What’s also nice is Gillen starts us fresh with no need to read the previous volume.

Kubert’s art is fantastic as expected. The art alone is a reason to pick up the issue. I found myself lingering on each page basking in each one’s beauty. This team together is a superstar team that seem to have been made for each other.

I went into the issue with not much as far as hopes and have come out of it intrigued as to what’s to come. Hopefully what we’ll see won’t be wedged into “X” continuity and like this first issue a natural flow of events as if this was always Wolverine’s known history, one we just weren’t familiar with.
