The original Ghostbusters debuted in 1984 with $13,578,151 about $36.1 million in today’s dollars. It also had a budget of $30 million which is just under $80 million in today’s dollars. Ghostbusters: Afterlife has a reported budget of about $75 million. So, compared to the original, the numbers aren’t so bad for this relaunch.

The 2016 Ghostbusters reboot opened with $46,018,755 which is about $53 million in today’s dollars. That had a budget of $144,000,000 which is about $166 million today.

Ghostbusters II debuted with $29,472,894 in 1989 which is about $65.7 million today. That film had a budget of about $25 million, around $55.8 million in today’s dollars.

We still have have a bit to go to see where Ghostbusters: Afterlife ends but as far as opening, the film is one of the more successful films, with a moderate budget by today’s standards. If it has some legs, expect sequels to spin out of it but there’s still some time to see how it does. No matter, Sony should be happy with the relaunch of the property and its debut.
