Review: Sonic the Hedgehog #1

After defeating the evil Dr. Eggman’s latest plot, Sonic is racing around the world to shut down the robotic Badnik forces that are still attacking villages. But it’s a big job for one person-even Sonic the Hedgehog! Fortunately, he’ll have some help from his best friend: Tails!

I have rarely read a Sonic comic even though it was one of the longest running comics ever when it was with Archie and from what I hear, really good. So, with a fresh start, a new publishing with IDW Publishing, I thought I’d check out Sonic the Hedgehog #1 and it’s not bad.

I wasn’t much of a SEGA player when I was a kid so my exposure to Sonic as a whole is pretty limited. The first issue drops you into the action. Dr. Eggman is gone but villages are being attacked. Who’s doing it? Why are they doing it? That’s the bulk of the first issue. But it also features lots of action as Sonic and Tails take on baddie robots. Writer Ian Flynn delivers a comic that answers some questions, leaves a lot still in the air, and makes it intriguing. The result is much more adult than expected though I’ve heard that’s the same with previous volumes.

The art by Tracy Yardley has lots of life with inks by Jim Amash and Bob Smith, colors by Matt Herms, and lettering by Corey Breen. Everyone looks unique, including the generic townspeople and there’s a solid mix of high and low tech. The depiction of the “speed” and “movement” of Sonic is key to make this comic work and it does it all really well.

While the end product didn’t have me super excited, I did enjoy it. Enough that I want to check out the next issue. I can’t compare it to what has come before but as far as a fresh start, it’s a good one. The comic feel like it’s one that’s good for kids and adults alike and I’m interested in seeing where it goes from here.

BOOM! Studios Announces Tyson Hesse’s Diesel: Gear Shift Special for October

BOOM! Studios has announced the return of Dee Diesel in Tyson Hesse’s Diesel: Gear Shift Special, an all-new follow-up to the BOOM! Box imprint’s most successful original graphic novel. The one-shot will debut in comic shops in October.

Dee’s journey first began on Tyson Hesse’s personal blog, when Dee and her fellow Peacetowne inhabitants were featured as original character designs. Inspired by “adventure manga like One Piece and stories about burgeoning friendships like How to Train Your Dragon,” Hesse created Dee, a young girl with an airship trying to live up to the legacy of her father, a world-famous pilot. Since then, Dee and her friends have gained a huge cult following and were first published in print via BOOM! Studios as a limited series in 2015 and an original graphic novel in 2016, Tyler Hesse’s Diesel: Ignition, which drew wide acclaim.

Hesse explains:

Diesel: Gear Shift picks up right where Diesel: Ignition left off. It’s a chance for fans of the first graphic novel to jump right in to the next story arc right away. Dee and Bull Diesel have reconnected with their lost crew and are on their way back home to regroup and prepare for the long journey ahead.  But when they get back to Peacetowne, they uncover new clues that set them off in search of other Diesel brothers that could have answers to all their questions.

Copies of Tyson Hesse’s Diesel: Gear Shift Special are available for sale in October.

The first-ever original graphic novel spawning out of Tyson Hesse’s Diesel, Hesse’s popular “punk motif”-inspired, coming-of-age story about Diandra “Dee” Diesel, her mysterious flying engine, and the airship colony she lives on, Peacetowne.

When a long-lost army suddenly appears from beneath the clouds, one impulsive decision made by Dee will change her destiny forever.

With only her broken-down robot companion and a mysterious flying engine to help her, Dee is sent on a sky-bound journey that will take her from the darkest wastelands below the clouds to the brightest capital of her world.

Her greatest challenge will be to look beyond her family legacy and create a destiny of her own choosing.

Tyson Hesse’s (Amazing World of Gumball, Bravest Warriors) visually stunning graphic novel examines the importance of family, responsibility, and heroism, all set in a grand, new world!
