Mike Mignola and Bruce Zick Unveil New Dimension of the Hellboy Universe in Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time

Legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is teaming up with writer and artist Bruce Zick to explore an uncharted corner of the Hellboy Universe in Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time. On a dark night in 1880s England, the ever-adventurous Whittier family, along with Edward Grey, are attempting to send a man into the realm between reality and the Beyond to free the trapped spirit of a Whittier uncle. But his expedition into space—and time—will take him to places beyond even the Witchfinder’s knowledge. Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time follows an intrepid time-travelling explorer on a journey to a new dimension. He soon discovers that the monsters he encounters aren’t his only problem, as time itself might represent the ultimate danger.

The 32-page Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time #1 is due out on Oct 22, 2025 from Dark Horse.

Get a look at Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham’s villains

The Dark Knight’s rogues gallery gets an Elseworlds makeover – including the likes of Penguin, Killer Croc, Talia al Ghul and Mr. Freeze – in Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham, available to purchase Digitally and on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack and Blu-ray on March 28, 2023 from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment.

Inspired by the comic book series by Mike Mignola, Richard Pace and Troy Nixey, Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham is a 1920s-based tale that finds explorer Bruce Wayne accidentally unleashing an ancient evil, expediting his return to Gotham City after a two-decade hiatus. The logic/science-driven Batman must battle Lovecraftian supernatural forces threatening the sheer existence of Gotham, along the way being aided and confronted by reimagined versions of his well-known allies and enemies, including Green Arrow, Ra’s al Ghul, Mr. Freeze, Killer Croc, Two-Face, James Gordon and Bruce’s beloved wards. Prepare for a mystical, often terrifying Batman adventure unlike any other.

  • As an Elseworlds take on Mr. Freeze, Grendon appears to Bruce Wayne and his family as a frozen, undying corpse who is devoted to the evil entity unleashed upon the unsuspecting world. DC Animated Movies veterans David Giuntoli (Grimm, A Million Little Things) and David Dastmalchian (Dune, The Suicide Squad, Ant-Man) give voice to Bruce Wayne/Batman and Grendon, respectively, in Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham.
  • Where Professor Oswald Cobblepot’s expedition ends is where Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham begins as Bruce Wayne and his crew discover Cobblepot’s abandoned ship, including his detailed journal. But the Wayne expedition can find no sign of the professor, even while the evolving Cobblepot and his penguins watch them intently from high above. David Giuntoli (Grimm, A Million Little Things) reprises his Batman: Soul of the Dragon role as the voice of Bruce Wayne & the Dark Knight, while William Salyers (The Regular Show) voices yet another rendition of the Penguin as Cobbelpot.
  • Killer Croc’s Elseworlds version might be even more menacing than his usual appearance, particularly as the massive creature operates under the merciless command of Talia al Ghul – or looming tall over Batman in Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham. David Giuntoli (Grimm, A Million Little Things) gives voice to Batman/Bruce Wayne.
  • Talia al Ghul seems to be integral to the troubled shadows overtaking the city in Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham. Three-time Emmy Award nominee Emily O’Brien (Constantine: City of Demons, Days of Our Lives) reprises her Gotham Knights video game role as Talia al Ghul.

Review: Trout: The Hollowest Knock #1 (of 4)

Trout: The Hollowest Knock #1

Cormack McCarthy is one of those writers that readers feel very strongly about. Much like Haruki Murakami, his books either draw vitriol from readers or undying love. The polar opposite of reactions to these two prolific writers can be understood on both accounts. When it comes to McCarthy many of his books tend to focus on man’s inner struggle between altruism and selfishness. Murakami tends to want to understand why people are disconnected from the bigger fabric of humanity.

Both of these themes tend to be grim and make transparent the evils that lie within the reader. They don’t offer escape but instead a mirror for us to look in to.  This is what makes McCarthy’s The Road so affecting to anyone who has read it. Many zombie stories reveal how our need for survival often outweighs our need to do the right thing. In the first issue of Trout: The Shallowed Knock, we find two protagonists paying for past sins and finding even more impediments on their journey.

We meet Giuseppe, a man who gets caught up in a mass murder, a crime which implicates him and puts his son, Trout in the crosshairs of the townsfolk who burn his house in protest. Thankfully, the two-escape alive, as they find themselves on an ocean vessel, one where the crew is feeling uneasy about their new passengers, fearing trouble follows them. As the two are thrown off the ship and put on a lifeboat, as fear and confusion consume the men, making Trout and Giuseppe, almost good for dead, as something even more sinister awaits them under the sea. By issue’s end, Trout is lost at sea while Giuseppe is in desperate need to find his son for better or worse.

Overall, a comic that is fun and harrowing and a whole lot of weird. It gives me echoes of Terry Gilliam’s The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. The story by Troy Nixey is extensive, keen, and penetrating. The art by Nixey and colorist Dave Stewart is simply awe-inspiring. Altogether, a great story which looks to get even better in the next installment.
