Zoop Celebrates National Comic Book Day with a Comic Sampler

Zoop

Starting off with full disclosure, I’m the marketing manager for Zoop. It’s why we haven’t covered the new crowdfunding platform at all, I just felt it weird crossing the streams and one who cares about the “ethics” of journalism it’s a bit hard to mix things up for me. But, today is National Comic Book Day and the platform is celebrating that with a cool sampler of all of the crowdfunding projects past and present on the site. You can catch more of that below.

I more wanted to talk about why I’m excited about being a part of the Zoop team. The simple answer is, we get to do stuff like this. I’ve been reading and collecting comics for over 35 years. My collection is massive (100+ long boxes) and the variation of comics is… a lot. There’s big publishers, small publishers, indie comics, paper stapled together after being xeroxed. It varies. I really like comic books. And, I like talking about comics and sharing what I like and promoting them. Hence this site.

That’s part of what drew me to Zoop and the team. I get to promote cool comics. I get to help try to make them a reality. So far, we’ve succeeded with them all and I’ve backed every single one. We not only get to help make these comics a reality by getting them funded but we’re building a community while doing it. Unlike other crowdfunding platform, this isn’t every creator in their mostly walled off garden. We use each campaign to build on the next. We’re attempting to bring together comic fans who want to help make this creator-owned indie comics a reality. To be a part of that is really cool.

When I was 20ish I helped published an indie comic that was released during San Diego Comic-Con. I got my name in the credits. That won’t happen here but to see that at 20 is such a cool exprience. I helped create something that others could enjoy. I get to do that every day with Zoop. And that’s what’s cool about this sampler, I feel like I’m 20 again with its release.

Today, I’ll be out promoting the current projects that are looking for funding, all three of them, and in-between spending some time reading some comics myself.

Check out the first Zoop sampler release and all of the comics that you can currently help make a reality. Links are within the comic sampler, so dive in, enjoy, and help celebrate today by reading some comics and maybe help make some a reality.

SDCC 2013: ComiXology Sponsors TR!CKST3R

ComiXology’s Meet Your Makers summer extravaganza continues with the announcement of comiXology’s sponsorship of the “The Pen and Drink – where artists are welcome to enjoy a drink while picking up the pen to draw an array of live models while listening to great tunes during San Diego Comic-Con 2013.

TR!CKST3R will be held at the East Village Tavern Bowl, located at 9th & Market in San Diego from July 17th to July 20th with “The Pen and Drink” happening every evening. ComiXology co-founder John D. Roberts will also be giving a talk during TR!CKST3R on Saturday, July 20th at 1-2pm on Digital Comics: Tips and Tricks.

ComiXology has become a champion of creator owned works with their launch of  comiXology Submit which debuted last March. It’s an easy to use self-publishing portal that enables independent comic book creators to reach comiXology’s global audience of comic fans.

Debuting in 2011, TR!CKST3R took the comic world by storm with their unique vision of a pop-up store with merchandise and events all supporting and promoting creator-owned work. Considered one of the top “places-to-be” during Comic-Con International, TR!CKST3R rapidly spawned it’s own brick and mortar store during their second year of existence. The permanent TR!CKST3R store can be found at 2631 Ashby Ave, Suite A, in Berkeley, California. The show within a show is one of my favorite aspects of SDCC.

Childhood Heroes Debuts at TR!CKST3R!

childhood heroesTR!CKSTER is one of the best things going on during San Diego Comic-Con. An event within event, it buzzes with creativity and fun, celebrating comics and especially indie and small print. TR!CKSTER has announced Childhood Heroes an anthology collection featuring art and stories inspired by the ones we drew when we were kids. Many of the artists included images of their original childhood art along with new versions of their old friends. TR!CKSTER has described it as a project “over 30 years in the making!”

A portion of the proceeds from the sales of Childhood Heroes will be sent to The Children’s Creativity Museum in San Francisco to help youngsters there find their very own Heroes.

This printing is limited to a edition of 500 and will debut at TR!CKST3R: San Diego which is being held at the East Village Tavern Bowl: 930 Market St. starting July 17th.

This is the second book ever published by TR!CKSTER. This (among many) is a great reason to head over to the event and check out this limited edition comic as well as event.

Tr!ckster Returns to SDCC as Tr!ckst3r

One of the more entertaining things last year about last year’s San Diego Comic Con was Tr!ckster, the counter-con held at a local bar not too far from the main convention. Redubbed Tr!ckst3r this year, the convention by a convention will run from July 17 to July 20 at the East Village Tavern. It will also spill over into the nearby Space4Art gallery.

Tr!ckst3r blends comics, live drawing, drinks and music together in a hot spot to chat with creators and fans.
