Transformers Dark of the MoonTuesday night at 9pm I settled into my movie seat with a smile on my face fully expecting a big screen 3D spectacle involving giant robots beating the crap out of each other. Transformers: Dark of the Moon starts off recounting the Cybertronian War in awesome 3D fx, with each moment getting me more and more excited, and making me forget the rather laughable second installment of Michael Bay‘s Transformers trilogy.  Moments later we see Shia LaBeouf‘s Sam Witwicky’s latest hot girlfriend, model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in a camera angle that was to please the adolescent males (in both age and maturity) seeing this movie.

From there, the movie turned into a horrible, horrible mess devoid of a coherent plot and acting that involved lots of yelling.  By the end of the film I found myself cheering on the bad guys to exterminate all of humanity and put me out of my misery and the chance we’d see a fourth film.

The film’s plot involves a plan to restore the Transformer’s destroyed planet of Cybertron.  It’s a plot that was done earlier in the cartoon series and done better (and it had better acting).  It’s one action sequence after the next, never really advancing any of the characters, and instead doing it’s best to mix humor and action and never finding the right balance.  Characters are piled upon characters and plot point upon plot point until the final battle which looked as over done and needlessly complicated as the craptacular actionfest that preceded it.

What’s sad is, if the movie stuck with the straight action, eliminating the humor, the movie would have been better.  the movie which runs almost 3 hours is just too long and not focused.

I can’t say I was expecting Shakespeare and the action sequences were great, but that’s what the movie was, one action sequence after another with little reason for why things were occurring.  Instead of flying low to sneak troops in, we have copters choose not to land and instead climb high to force military forces to dive from the copters and swoop through the Chicago skyline in squirrel suits.  A sequence that looks great, but is just complicated for no reason.  The entire movie is a Rube Goldberg device (way to many steps to accomplish a simple task) instead of the lean action machine it should be.

You know a movie has issues when you walk out only to say, “at least there wasn’t racist robots.”  Transformers: Dark of the Moon is an absolute skip.

(NASDAQ: HAS), as the 2011 TRANSFORMERS fan convention known as “BOTCON” returns to Pasadena on June 4-5.  Less than a month before the highly anticipated debut of the new Paramount Pictures film TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON, Hasbro, in partnership with The TRANSFORMERS Collectors’ Club, will be offering opportunities to engage in and learn about the TRANSFORMERS brand that can only be experienced at BOTCON.

Attendees will be able to preview upcoming and yet-to-be seen TRANSFORMERS toys from Hasbro’s 2011 product line, including movie toys and figures based on the TRANSFORMERS PRIME animated series as well as interact with TRANSFORMERS toy designers.  BOTCON will also be fans’ first time to see, in person, Hasbro’s new KRE-O line of construction sets based on classic TRANSFORMERS characters and attendees will have the opportunity for a chance to win a limited amount of KRE-O TRANSFORMERS toys before they go on sale.  Convention goers can also attend panel discussions and interactive workshops led by TRANSFORMERS experts, purchase exclusive TRANSFORMERS products sold only at this year’s convention and buy, sell or trade TRANSFORMERS toys from hundreds of dealers.

And, as previously announced on the official TRANSFORMERS Facebook page, Hasbro will be inducting film industry legends Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg—the director and executive producer of the blockbuster TRANSFORMERS film franchise—into its TRANSFORMERS Hall of Fame. The second annual TRANSFORMERS Hall of Fame ceremony will take place during BOTCON and TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON director, Michael Bay, will be present to accept his honor and share some special surprises with the audience.

To round out the TRANSFORMERS movie experience at BOTCON, Hasbro will be welcoming vehicles seen in the TRANSFORMERS film franchise from Paramount Pictures including OPTIMUS PRIME, BUMBLEBEE, SIDESWIPE, IRONHIDE and AUTOBOT RATCHET. The vehicles will be on display inside the Pasadena Convention Center throughout BOTCON.

As the TRANSFORMERS brand continues its meteoric rise as a premier entertainment brand, convention attendees will be able to experience the wide breadth of TRANSFORMERS entertainment including interactive exhibits and hands-on experiences by the brand’s video game, publishing and animation partners.

  • Activision will offer BOTCON attendees the opportunity to experience its TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON video game. The game thrusts players directly into an original, action-packed prologue storyline to experience the epic battles on Earth between the AUTOBOTS and DECEPTICONS that will shape the events of the summer’s most anticipated blockbuster film.

“Interest in TRANSFORMERS is the highest it’s ever been,” said Greg Lombardo, TRANSFORMERS Senior Global Brand Director, Hasbro, Inc.  “The live-action film TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON is getting a tremendous amount of advance buzz, and TRANSFORMERS PRIME is a huge hit with both longtime fans and a new generation of kids discovering the TRANSFORMERS brand for the first time. BOTCON is all about celebrating both of those groups—the lifelong fans and the new fans—and their love of the TRANSFORMERS brand.”

BOTCON is annually the largest annual official gathering of TRANSFORMERS fans in the world and is open to both TRANSFORMERS diehard and casual fans alike as well as families and children who enjoy the iconic “ROBOTS IN DISGUISE”. About the TRANSFORMERS brand

First introduced in 1984 by Hasbro and Takara Tomy, the TRANSFORMERS brand has provided kids with hours of MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE fun with their action figures that convert from robot to vehicles and back again. Legions of kids around the world grew up creating fantastic adventures and battles set on both the planet CYBERTRON and Earth that featured the “good-guy” AUTOBOTS and the “bad-guy” DECEPTICONS. Since then, more than 7500 robots have been introduced in animated TV series, comic books and two live-action feature films. A third film, TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON, will be released on July 1, 2011, as the first 3D film in the franchise.

My Summer Movie Schedule

Bookmark and Share

With the summer movie season just a few weeks away from kicking off, I’ve been going over the release schedule to figure out my game plan.  Below is my must and likely see list for the next few months.  Notice some high profile omitions.

May

Hobo With a Shotgun – May 6 – This unlikely movie is a rage on the Torrents and there’s not enough B-movie grindhouse flicks out there. Plus, how can you not see it with that title?

Thor – May 6 – Um, yes please. With each video and teaser, I want to see this more.

Something Borrowed – May 6 – I’m a sucker for rom-coms, but this one will likely be seen through television and Netflix

Priest – May 13 – I haven’t read the graphic novel, but the trailers have me sucked in.

Bridesmaids – May 13 – This one is on the edge, but it’s possible it’s a female version of the Hangover.

Everything Must Go – May 13 – The story of a man who gets rid of everything. It looks very interesting.

Skateland – May 13 – I’m sure it won’t get much coverage, but this seems like Adventureland, but in a skate rink.

The Hangover II – May 26 – I’ve seen the first one too many times to count. This is one of my most anticipated movies of the summer.

The Tree of Life – May 27 – Brad Pitt and Sean Penn? This screams a nice adult night out during the big action summer.

June

X-Men: First Class – June 3 – I remain skeptical, but the trailers have got be a lot less worried.

Super 8 – June 10 – J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg?  Sign me up.

Green Lantern – June 17 – I still remain skeptical but the first trailer has me a lot less worried.

Bad Teacher – June 24 – Justin Timberlake is hillarious.  Don’t believe me?  Check out any time he’s on SNL for proof.

Conan O’Briend Can’t Stop – June 24 – This documentary has me intrigued and a lot of buzz coming out of SXSW.

July

Transformers: Dark of the Moon – July 1 – The second movie was horrible. I’m crossing my fingers the second one is much better.

Horrible Bosses – July 8 – This comedy looks hilarious.  I think it has potential to be a Hangover like summer breakout.

Project Nim – July 8 – Another documentary but this one with monkeys.  Monkeys!

Captain America: The First Avenger – July 22 – The first trailer got me drooling.  I can’t wait for this film.

Friends With Benefits – July 22 – This is a replay of a certain other movie, but another movie with Justin Timberlake (hilarious) and the very beautiful Mila Kunis is a must see for me.

Another Earth – July 22 – A Sundance darling that’s described part sci-fi, astronomy and philosophy.  Sounds like my type of movie.

Cowboys & Aliens – July 29 – Read the title again, do I need to say why I want to see it? I haven’t read the graphic novel, but you better believe I will before the movie opens.

Crazy, Stupid, Love – July 29 – A movie with Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling has me intrigued.

The Guard – July 29 – I saw a bit about this movie at Sundance, it had me interested at that point.

August

Rise of the Planet of the Apes – August 5 – I’m a big fan of the entire Apes series (other than the crappy remake).  A new prequel is on a must-see list for me.

Conan the Barbarian – August 19 – The original is a classic.  It’ll be tough to top it.

Our Idiot Brother – August 26 – Another Sundance buzzed about movie.  This is the other that has potential to be a Hangover like summer hit.
