Review: Titans Hunt #3

Teen Titans Hunt #3Haunted by a past they no longer recognize, Dick Grayson and Roy Harper hunt for the truth. Somehow, somewhere, there must be someone who can explain the memories that obsess them but don’t belong to them.  Their search has unleashed the rage of Atlantis, but that’s nothing compared to the fury of the Amazonian outcast waiting for them in the shadows.

I haven’t been too kind on Titans Hunt so far. The first two issues haven’t caught my interest, but I keep reading it because I really do enjoy writer Dan Abnett and I’m hoping to see more of what I enjoy about his work.

Three issues in and the series is slowly bringing me around. Slowly is the key word there. Mostly, this issue is a lot of fighting as the usual trope of heroes battling each other before becoming allies is used… a lot.

What I am enjoying more in this issue is folks realizing they know each other. The way they interact, and confusion they portray comes off the page as feeling very realistic. Those types of moments are winning me over. Also, the mystery that’s built up over the first two issues are finely starting to roll out and lead to something. I’m not sure the payoff is there yet, but things are starting to get interesting at least.

The art is better in this issue too. The battle sequences are entertaining and the emotion shown by the characters are solid. Artist Paulo Siqueira is growing on me and it feels like with each issue there’s a better grasp on the characters and more confidence in the art.

The series isn’t quite there for me yet, and so far it feels like it’d be better read as a trade than individual issues, but things are getting better. I think the next issue will be key to see if this is a series I keep reading, or one I completely give up on.

Review: Titans Hunt #2

Titans Hunt #2“The Secret History of the Teen Titans” continues! Dick Grayson is hot on the trail of a young Atlantean named Garth—but what he doesn’t realize is that something is hunting him! Plus, Roy Harper encounters a mysterious woman named Lilith—and this run-in will leave him questioning his own past!

If you read the Teen Titans before the New 52, there’s a good chance you’re probably enjoying Titans Hunt more than me. Other than a few issues here and there, the Teen Titans weren’t a comic I was regularly reading and not one I’ve gone back to catch up on. And having finished reading Titans Hunt #2, I feel like writer Dan Abnett is really mining whats come before, relying a lot on nostalgia to get readers excited. That’s not a bad thing, as not all comics are for all people.

The story, from what I can figure out, involves a post New 52 Dick Grayson gathering Teen Titans from a previous Earth who are now scattered on the current Earth post Convergence. At least, I think that’s what’s going on, I’m not quite sure. I know the characters we’re being shown at one point were members of the Teen Titans, but without that connection to the previous team, their coming together doesn’t feel all that special to me, the idea doesn’t excite me.

The art by Paulo Siqueira is decent. There’s some issues here and there, but the comic feels very much like a “house style.” Nothing really jumps out and excites me, but it does the job of telling Abnett’s tale.

I’m pretty sure the fact I haven’t previously read Teen Titans is why I’m not super excited about the comic. And I wonder how long time fans might feel differently. That lack of excitement though is getting me to want the story to get going and hopefully give us some excitement, because right now there’s just not much making me want to continue reading.

Review: Titans Hunt #1

Titans_Hunt_1_559ad5fe0adc69.50346412Convergence is over, but the ripples are still being felt, especially by a young precog named Lilith. What are these visions she’s having of a Teen Titans team the world never knew? And why does she feel compelled to seek out Dick Grayson, Roy Harper, Donna Troy and an Atlantean named Garth and warn them that something dark and sinister is coming after them? Who are Mal, Gnarrk, Hank Hall and Dawn Granger, and what is their connection to the others—and to the fate of every soul on Earth? This is the Secret History of the TEEN TITANS!

There’s been three series that have directly spun out of Convergence, DC Comics‘ summer event, Telos, Superman: Lois and Clark, and now Titans Hunt. The three so far have been bad, good, and somewhere in between as far as quality.

Written by Dan Abnett with art by Paulo Siqueira Titans Hunt #1 is an interesting first issue in that it’s very much set-up for a mystery, and a set-up that likely only get you excited if you’re really into the Teen Titans and familiar with their history. Taking place on… actually I’m not quite sure 100% which Earth, the first issue has the Titans not knowing who they are, and wandering. The issue basically has a bunch of amnesiacs, which is an interesting concept, but unless you know who these characters are/were, you wouldn’t care a whole lot. It falls into that trap of relying too heavily on cannon and continuity, making it difficult to get in to for new readers. And I count myself among those new readers as I don’t really know the Teen Titans beyond the New 52 version.

But, Abnett does deliver solid writing, and that’s what saves the comic for me. Abnett is beyond talented and been a part of some of my favorite runs on various comics. The mystery is presented well due to the writing, and it is entertaining in its own way due to that.

Siqueira’s art is good. There’s some character design issues, particularly around some panels with Dick Grayson, but overall, most of the comic is solid art. There’s just too many close up panels of Grayson’s face where it doesn’t look like him, enough for me to remember that aspect.

The comic might excite long time fans, but I’m not quite sure there’s enough to entice new readers. And as a new one, I can only review my experience reading the comic. I plan on checking out the second issue, but I’d be cautious checking this out for newbies.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Justice League #45Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Alex

Top Pick: Ivar, Timewalker #10 (Valiant) – There are dinosaurs riding dinosaurs. That’s all.

Rai #11 (Valiant) – I usually stay clear of most sci-fi comics, or at the least those set in the far future, but something about Rai has me intrigued. Ive enjoyed the first two issues in the current arc, and I can’t wait to see where it ends up.

The Shield #1 (Dark Circle Comics) – The last series I read from Dark Circle, The Fox, was amazing. I can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store for this series.

Brett

Top Pick: The Arab of the Future (Metropolitan Books) – Riad Sattouf recounts his nomadic childhood growing up in rural France, Gaddafi’s Libya, and Assad’s Syria, but always under the roof of his father, a Syrian Pan-Arabist who drags his family along in his pursuit of dreams for the Arab nation. It not only allows us to learn more about an eccentric family, but also a world many of us will never know.

Back to the Future #1 (IDW Publishing) – I love the fist two films (third not so much), and I’m nervous about this series, but holy crap am I excited for it.

Justice League #45 (DC Comics) – The “Darkseid War” continues as the second wave begins as the Justice League members have gained great power, but at a price. Wonder Woman and Mister Miracle must help the League escape the curse of the New Gods and hold on to their humanity. The last issue left my jaw on the floor. I’m expecting more of the same.

The Paybacks #2 (Dark Horse) – One of the funniest new series out there. Each issue so far has had me laughing, and left me beyond entertained. Absolutely brilliant on so many levels.

Uncanny Inhumans #1 (Marvel) – The Inhumans are one of four main cores of the Marvel universe (Spider-Man, X-Men, and Avengers being the other three). This new series, featuring the talents of writer Charles Soule and artists Steve McNiven and Brandon Peterson, not only features Medusa, Black Bolt, Triton, and Reader, but also Torch and Beast!? Yeah, I’m intrigued.

Mr. H

Top Pick: Titans Hunt #1 (DC Comics) – The original Titans back together again solving a mystery?  Hell yes. So excited for this book and have faith the creative team will knock it out the park. I will be waiting with my catchers mitt to see if I’m right.

Amazing Spider-Man #2 (Marvel) – This book has just been flat out fun. I’ve heard people say that Peter Parker is being handled like a poor man’s Tony Stark. I don’t buy that argument at all, but I will be buying this. Why? Because it’s fun and for our Friendly World Spider-Man that’s exactly what I want. Go Team Slott!

Batman and Robin Eternal #3 (DC Comics) – The first issue was gangbusters, last week’s was a bit slow. Now that the characters and the list has been introduced, I hope the action ramps up and we get a great Bat tale. Very glad Cassandra Cain is back too.

Justice League #45 (DC Comics) – What can be said about this book that hasn’t already been said? It’s a steamrolling juggernaut and like the New England Patriots I can count on Johns and Co. to give me a great performance and the W! Hoping Darkseid is not really dead though.
