Pick of the Week – The Walking Dead #99

You thought everyone would be talking about that “Before” comic this summer?  Well, you’re wrong, the most buzzed about series right now is The Walking Dead and it’s continued surge and growth due to it’s successful conversion of television fans into comic book fans.  It’s impressive.  But sure enough, what I think a good chunk of people will talk about is this issue that leads into the big 100 mark.  The series is seeing a resurgence that can’t be missed.

  • The Walking Dead #99 – see above
  • Saga #4 – Brian K. Vaughn has a sci-fi roller coaster on his hands and I’m loving ride.
  • Ghostbusters #10 – What can you do with the team after so many issues and movies that’s original?  Take them on the road of course.
  • Grim Leaper #2 – It’s like Pushing Daisies, cute and so much fun.
  • The Secret History of D.B. Cooper #4 – The series is over the top crazy and so entertaining.

Pick of the Week – Harvey Pekar’s Cleveland

I grew up in Cleveland, actually not far from where Harvey Pekar lived.  So when it was announced one of his final projects before his death was about that city, I was beyond excited.  Having read it, Harvey Pekar’s Cleveland is fantastic.  While it covers a time of the city I wasn’t born, I called my parents after reading it asking if they knew the references he made.  But the graphic novel is more than just about Cleveland, Ohio, it’s also a story about America’s major cities as a whole, many who suffer like the city dubbed “The Mistake By the Lake.”  There’s a few more projects still to come from Pekar, but as a whole, this is up there as one of my favorite works by any comic creator.

  • Harvey Pekar’s Cleveland – see above
  • Secret History of D.B. Cooper #2 – I’m sure many of you skipped the first issue of this awesome series.  It’s so bizarre and entertaining.  I don’t even know how to describe it other than awesome.
  • Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye #4 – I’m loving IDW’s Transformers relaunch with two stories focusing on two very different things, it’s never been a better time to be a Transformers fan.
  • 3 Story: Secret Files of the Giant Man – Matt Kindt’s new 3 Story one shot is amazing. I’ve read it, it’s an absolute must buy.
  • The Shadow #1 – Garth Ennis doing the Shadow?  Yes Please!

“DANG! Killer! This comic is CRAZY COOL, beautiful to look at and a blast to read!”

-Michael Allred (Madman, iZOMBIE)

“Few people can pull off the strangeness and monster boogie the way Brian Churilla does with THE SECRET HISTORY OF D. B. COOPER. He takes history and conspiracy and samurai swords and one-eared teddy bears, tosses them in a blender with lots of slime-dripping beasties, and mixes up a story of mental warfare that goes down nice and smooth. Here’s a secret that deserves to see the light of day.”

-Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun, Wolverine)

“This is the book Brian Churilla was born to create. Eerie, compelling, energetic, fun … packed with monsters, mystery, mind-tripping and mayhem. I can’t wait to delve deeper into the secrets…”

“A dazzling work of sheer lunacy. Everything you want from a conspiracy comic, plus, Monsters!”

-Joshua Hale Fialkov (I; Vampire, Echoes)

“The only mystery more confounding than the ultimate fate of D.B. Cooper is why Brian Churilla isn’t already the biggest thing in comics. After readers get a look at THE SECRET HISTORY OF D.B. COOPER that will change in a hurry.”

-Phillip Hester (Wonder Woman, The Darkness)

“Brian Churilla has taken one of the greatest mysteries of the 20th century and transformed it into one of the most innovative comics of the 21st. THE SECRET HISTORY OF DB COOPER is absolutely required reading.”

Oni Press will celebrate the launch of this exciting new title with the special variant. “J.H. His striking compositions are often like puzzles in that the more you look at them, the more you will find hidden, mysterious depths. This makes him the perfect artist to lend his hand to Brian’s unraveling of the D.B. Cooper folklore.”

“This story has intrigued me even since I was a little kid,” Churilla said. “To get to play around with the mythos in comic book form is a dream come true, and that dream has only gotten better after seeing how J.H. has chosen to interpret the material. THE SECRET HISTORY OF D.B. COOPER #1

Written and illustrated by Brian Churilla
Monthly starting in March 2012

It’s our contention that the FBI’s recent inclusion of amateur sleuths in the forty-year search for infamous hijacker D.B. Cooper is part of an elaborate ruse being perpetrated on the public.  Furthermore, this is likely part of an attempt by the government to discredit the forthcoming Oni Press series, THE SECRET HISTORY OF D.B. COOPER, which finally reveals the truth regarding the case. In our continuing effort to subvert the government’s unending campaign of misinformation, we have decided to release a preview of the first issue.

From creator Brian Churilla, the book chronicles the life of the mythic folk hero, revealing that “The DB Cooper Incident” was not a hijacking and extortion plot as widely reported. In fact, this cover story is quite pedestrian, as what really happened nearly changed the course of human history.
