The Penguin #7 shows how deep Oswald’s machinations go

The Penguin #7

In the shocking second chapter of the story of Batman and the Penguin’s first meeting, a dramatic change in their relationship has emerged…is Cobblepot ready to go toe-to-toe with the Dark Knight? Or is he already two moves ahead? The Penguin #7 is an interesting look at the character’s rise to power and how much that was enabled by Batman.

Written by Tom King, the comic continues to shift the focus of the series a bit. The original arc had the Penguin in the now, tasked with rebuilding his empire in Gotham. This arc takes us back to the beginning to show how a bartender turned into one of the top dogs in Gotham’s criminal empire.

The story by King has been interesting so far, with The Penguin #7 really standing out, especially with recent storylines in the main Batman series. We already knew that Batman was getting info from The Penguin, but it becomes clear here that there’s a deal that The Penguin is given some runway to do what he needs to do. What we find out is that Oswald really manipulated the situation with “false flag” attacks getting Batman to take on Penguin’s rivals.

To me, what’s interesting is that Batman gives The Penguin space to do what he needs to, while knowing the Penguin is lying and causing harm. Take that and contrast it with the recent “Gotham War” that showed a Batman that believed in no tolerance for crime. The Batman of today is in opposition to his past. Whether that’ll be explored more would be interesting but it’s something that stands out.

King also gives us a reason for “The Penguin.” Why does Oswald take on the personality he has hated? King delivers an interesting reason that once again how much Batman and Oswald colluded in the early days, a symbiotic relationship that can be debated as to its effectiveness.

Stevan Subic‘s art is interesting. With color by Marcelo Maiolo and lettering by Clayton Cowles, the comic’s look has a dirty and gritty look that is quite different than what we see in other Bat-titles. Subic’s style, enhanced by Maiolo’s colors makes Penguin look much more like a monster. While I’m not the biggest fan of the look, I appreciate how it reflects Penguin’s role and how he sees himself. There’s something interesting about the art style, the arc’s themes, and how it compares to other art in other Bat-titles and the comic’s previous arc.

The Penguin #7 is another solid issue showing us the first rise of one of Gotham’s leaders. It answers some questions and delivers an interesting take on the classic character. Like the series as a whole, the arc shows why this is a character to fear and truly giving him his due.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Duke #3

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

A Simple Truth (Amaze Ink/Slave Labor Graphics) – Based on Kevin Sacco’s own experience with international adoption.

Charred Remains #3 (Mad Cave) – We want to know what’s up with this one! The flaming man has been an interesting mystery so far. Think Backdraft mixed with horror.

Conan the Barbarian #8 (Titan Comics) – High quality Conan tales, the series has been excellent so far with solid storytelling and art.

Duke #3 (Skybound) – The Energon Universe has been great and this new take on Duke has been fantastic. Full of paranoia and action, it’s a great introduction to the world before G.I. Joe exists!

I May Be a Guild Receptionist, But I’ll Solo Any Boss to Clock Out on Time Vol. 2 (Yen Press) – This series has been great so far with a fun concept and great art. The volume twists things up in interesting ways we didn’t expect until much later.

Jill and the Killers #2 (Oni Press) – We got sucked into the first issue in this (possible murder) mystery series.

The Penguin #7 (DC Comics) – The series has been amazing so far as the Penguin attempts to rebuild his empire.

Punisher #4 (Marvel) – We want to know what/who Jigsaw is! Is it the classic villain back? Something/someone else? We’re loving the new Punisher.

Savage Sword of Conan #1 (Titan Comics) – The main Conan series has been excellent so far, so we’re intrigued to see if this series can equal that quality.

The Penguin #5

With the dust settling in the aftermath of the Gotham War, Penguin’s gathering the final member of his team before his return to Gotham…but who is this mysterious villain and what’s his connection to the Dark Knight? The Penguin #5 adds one more piece to the puzzle as The Penguin fleshes out his new team.

Written by Tom King, The Penguin #5 continues what is one of the best new series of the year. The Penguin has been tasked to head back to Gotham and again take control. To do so, he’s been slowly building a new crew. He has his muscle, his consiglieri and now one more member before returning to Gotham to begin his takeover.

King has done an amazing job with every issue to add so much depth and interesting bits to each character as they’re introduced. These are people to fear and despise but they’re also characters to feel a little sad for. They’re tragic each in their own way and the latest recruit is another prime example.

The Penguin #5 focuses on addiction. Whether it’s to drugs, smoking, murder, or action, every character in the series so far is addicted to something in some way. The Penguin has his traditional cigarette but he’s also addicted to control and power and in some ways revenge. But under the focus of addiction, King hints at the hypocrisy of it all. The villains, the heroes, what drives them is contradictory in many ways. While the Penguin’s new recruit waxes poetically about his own history, and how he focuses on addicts and those that fuel them, he himself smokes a cigarette while ignoring his addiction to his mission.

The art by Rafael De Latorre continues to be amazing. With color by Marcelo Maiolo and lettering by Clayton Cowles, the comic takes King’s tick of writing and makes it interesting. In-between the action sequences, the comic features King’s often used nine panels of talking. Each panel adds small details to the story and characters as they go back and forth to discuss the current state of things. With it all, we get a good sense of the Penguin’s new warrior and entertained by the action and ass-kicking.

The Penguin #5 is another amazing issue that cements the series as one of the best of the year. It has taken characters and made them both frightening and sympathetic while taking us into the mind of each. Here’s hoping the next year can bring more of the same as the Penguin begins to really make his moves.

FIST OF THE NORTH STAR HC VOL 11

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Alan Scott: The Green Lantern #3 (DC Comics) – The series has been a great mix of real history, DC comic history, and an expansion of Alan’s origin. Solid so far.

Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #4 (DC Comics) – So much fun and perfect for the holiday season as Santa teams with DC’s heroes to stop the Krampus.

Duke #1 (Skybound) – The launch of the G.I. Joe portion of the Energon Universe. We’ve read it, it’s really good.

Fist of the North Star Vol. 11 (VIZ Media) – The next chapter kicks off with a new storyline. We’re hoping for more of the same action with a new focus.

Holy Roller #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was a surprise as we were introduced to a new “hero” taking on the bigotry in his town.

Local Man #8 (Image Comics) – Every issue has been fantastic as it balances an original story, being an homage, and teasing connections to classic Image superhero comics.

The Penguin #5 (DC Comics) – One of the best series on the shelves right now. It makes you feel bad for the Penguin while fearing him as well.

Timeless #1 (Marvel) – Marvel teases next year’s comics with this end of year release.

Universal Monsters: Dracula #3 (Skybound) – An amazing adaptation of the classic novel.
