DSTLRY Launches its Digital Comics Reader Beta

DSTLRY has launched its beta v0.1 desktop reader at dstlry.co with the digital release of The Devil’s Cut. The digital debut of The Devil’s Cut is the first step towards a full mobile experience and marketplace, scheduled to debut in 2024.

The digital price of The Devil’s Cut will be $6.66. DSTLRY is recommending customers use the desktop reading experience; mobile reading is available but not fully stable in this beta v0.1 release.

For a rundown on beta v0.1 and current & upcoming features, check out the intro video from DSTLRY co-founder and CEO David Steinberger.

DSTLRY’s digital store and reader beta fuses the excitement of New Comic Book Day with digital reading, while establishing a new revenue stream for creators. Mirroring the limited-run nature of print comics, DSTLRY’s digital releases will be available directly from the publisher on dstlry.co for one week—Wednesday through Tuesday—upon release. Mass market digital releases will follow when collections arrive in print.

DSTLRY’s first digital release is The Devil’s Cut, the company’s premier issue. Featuring 11 knockout short-stories from the publisher’s all-star lineup of Founding Creators and friends, the digital version of the 88-page mature-readers collection will be available for purchase directly from DSTLRY through December 12th. Gone #1 by Jock will debut digitally on December 13th alongside the first ownership benefit, and Somna #1 by Tula Lotay and Becky Cloonan will debut digitally alongside more digital benefits on December 20th.

The v0.1 beta of DSTLRY’s digital reader will allow fans to enjoy their comics library in full page view, fit to width, with basic +/- zooming controls on their desktops. While also available via mobile web browsers, the best experience for v0.1 is on desktop.

NYCC 2023: DSTLRY announces its creator signings, exclusive covers, and Gone/Somna preview Ashcan!

DSTLRY has announced its plans for New York Comic Con. From today through Sunday, October 15, the publisher will be supporting a plethora of creator signings featuring its all-star lineup of writers and artists, alongside offering convention-exclusive variants of debut release The Devil’s Cut which come with a free flip ashcan previewing upcoming series Gone and Somna upon purchase.

In collaboration with ComicSketchArtCadence Comic Art, and Scott’s Collectables, DSTLRY will offer the convention-exclusive variant covers for its debut release, The Devil’s Cut, the 88-page short-story collection which released to rave reviews from press and fans on August 30 and quickly sold out at the distributor level, never to be reprinted again.

With every purchase of a convention-exclusive The Devil’s Cut variant, NYCC attendees will also receive a free black-and-white flip ashcan previewing upcoming DSTLRY series Gone, written and drawn by Jock, and Somna, written and drawn by both Becky Cloonan and Tula Lotay. Fans who pick up the ashcan can check out two of the most hotly anticipated comics of the fall, with sci-fi adventure Gone (rated Teen+) hitting shelves at local comic shops on October 25 and erotic, folk-horror thriller Somna (rated Mature) following on November 22.

Readers who can’t make it to NYCC this year need not fear, as DSTLRY has also unveiled the first five, full color pages of Jock’s spacefaring epic Gone. With the first 48-page, premium format issue lifting off in just under two weeks, comic and sci-fi fans of all kinds are in for a jaw-dropping spectacle from one of the industry’s brightest stars.

DSTLRY Founding Creators Mirka Andolfo, Lee Garbett, Jock, Tula Lotay, Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, and Ram V will all be on-site at NYCC to sign copies of The Devil’s Cut and the Gone/Somna ashcan across ComicSketchArt, Cadence Comic Art, and Scott’s Collectables signing areas.

DSTLRY’s The Devil’s Cut has sold out at the distributor level

DSTLRY has announced that its debut comic, The Devil’s Cut, has completely sold out at the distributor level. The 88-page, premium format one-shot, which will never be reprinted in this format again, released last week in comic book shops following rave early reviews and months of anticipation from fans.

While DSTLRY distribution partners Diamond Comic Distributors and Lunar Distribution have sold out of the more than 50,000 copies ordered, local comic shops may still have copies of the mature-readers release, which features 11 breathtaking short stories about love, fear, dreams, sex, and death from DSTLRY’s world-class Founding Creators and Friends.

Fans of the The Devil’s Cut can look forward to much more from DSTLRY, as eight of the stories featured in the one-shot will see their characters, worlds, and concepts expanded on in upcoming series throughout 2023 and 2024. Jock will kick things off on October 25 with Gone #1, a sci-fi adventure spinning out of his The Devil’s Cut entry “The Stowaway.” Becky Cloonan and Tula Lotay follow in November with their newly announced, erotic folk-horror nightmare Somna, with each of the fan-favorite creators contributing both writing and art as they did in their The Devil’s Cut offering, “What Blighted Flame Burns in Thee?”

Edited by the legendary Will Dennis, The Devil’s Cut features a flight of high-proof work and unfiltered stories crafted by the most innovative pioneers in comics, including DSTLRY’s Founding Creators Mirka Andolfo, Brian Azzarello, Marc Bernardin, Elsa Charretier, Becky Cloonan, Lee Garbett, Jock, Joëlle Jones, Tula Lotay, Jamie McKelvie, Junko Mizuno, Stephanie Phillips, Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, and Ram V, as well as friends Francesco Francavilla, Ariela Kristantina, Eduardo Risso, and Christian Ward.

DSTLRY’s The Devil’s Cut Sells 50,000+ Units to retailers

The Devil's Cut

DSTLRY has revealed that its debut publication, the 88-page $9.99 short story collection The Devil’s Cut, netted orders exceeding 50,000 from comic book stores. These orders secured The Devil’s Cut as one of the most successful independent comics, let alone oversized anthologies, published in the past decade.

Contributing to the success is the fact that The Devil’s Cut is fully returnable, never to be reprinted in this format again, and 8 of the 11 stories will continue as a series in the fall of 2023 and throughout 2024. That means retailers were more than likely to increase orders, especially to take advantage of variant covers that required certain ordering thresholds. The issue is also a “key’ in that it’ll debut at least 8 new series. All of that increased sales by decreasing risk and increasing the collectability.

According to direct market sales data available via Comichron.com, The Devil’s Cut would have been the 13th highest-grossing independent comics of 2021 and 4th top-grossing independent comic of 2019. If categorized as a graphic novel, DSTLRY’s debut would be 5th top-grossing independent graphic novel of 2021, and the number 1 top-grossing independent graphic novel of 2019. Indexing of sales data stopped in mid 2020 and 2022, so there are no available rankings for these years.

DSTLRY’s The Devil’s Cut features a flight of high-proof work and unfiltered stories from the most fearless creators. Edited by the legendary Will DennisThe Devil’s Cut is a one-shot offering with 11 stories crafted by the most innovative pioneers in comics, including the Founding Creators of DSTLRY Mirka Andolfo, Brian Azzarello, Marc Bernardin, Elsa Charretier, Becky Cloonan, Lee Garbett, Jock, Joëlle Jones, Tula Lotay, Jamie McKelvie, Junko Mizuno, Stephanie Phillips, Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, and Ram V alongside friends Francesco Francavilla, Ariela Kristantina, Eduardo Risso, and Christian Ward
