A Brief History of a Long War is an interesting but disjointed look at history

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine began long before the 2014 war that led to the Russia’s invasion in 2022. The Ukrainian people have been subjected to systematic persecution and mass atrocities by Russian and Soviet authorities across centuries—from the linguicide of the Ukrainian language and censorship of literature in the 1860s to the Holomodor famine of the 1930s, and more.

In  A Brief History of a Long War, distinguished Ukrainian scholar, activist, and journalist Mariam Naiem presents a panoramic overview of the major moments in this longstanding conflict. Alongside gripping accounts of the historical foundation of the modern Ukrainian state as we know it today, Naiem seamlessly incorporates current narratives about the harrowing realities of war and the lengths citizens must go to survive.

MrBallen Presents Where Nightmares Live has great art but doesn’t take advantage of it being a comic

In MrBallen Presents: Where Nightmares Live, John Allen, known popularly as “MrBallen,” is back with another heart-stopping collection of strange and mysterious stories exploring terrors that lie just beyond our comprehension. From skin-melting encounters in Brazil to a ghost that stalks the English countryside to a bell ringing deep in the Arizona wilderness, MrBallen’s spine-chilling tales—four of which are exclusive to this graphic novel—span multiple centuries and expose bizarre, terrifying, and utterly unforgettable experiences of the unnatural world.

The Comic Book History of the Cocktail is educational but feels like it’s missing some history

There’s no better writer to tell the colorful history of cocktails than David Wondrich, widely considered to be one of the world’s foremost authorities on cocktails and a driving force behind the early-twenty-first-century revival in the classic American art of mixing drinks.

In The Comic Book Story of the Cocktail, Wondrich teams up with comics artist Dean Kotz to trace the evolution of the cocktail. Beginning with the ancient days of wassail and hypocras (mixed drinks based on wine and beer), they narrate a tumultuous and vibrant history that stretches through the Age of Exploration, the boozier parts of the Enlightenment and America’s hurly-burly nineteenth century, to the Disco years, the Cosmo years, and the modern Cocktail Revolution.

Suitor Armor Vol. 3 is solid fantasy with some depth underneath the drama

After paying a visit to an illegal market on the outskirts of the kingdom, per direction from her imprisoned faerie ally Quinn, Lucia learns that she has been living in complete ignorance: Fairies are being tortured, mutilated, and killed as a consequence of the war. And the elves that she has seen humans taking as servants and laborers are just faeries who have had their wings forcibly removed. Lucia is ridden with immense guilt and emotional turmoil that she has survived for so long in secrecy as one the last of the monarch faeries with her wings still intact.

Bearing the weight of her newfound knowledge, amidst the arrival of King Reimund’s terrifyingly suspicious uncle Lord Ricon, Lucia fears she is no longer safe both within and beyond the castle. Modeus continues to serve as a pillar of comfort and safety for her, but he begins to develop his own complicated emotions while wrestling his true violent inclinations. Lucia’s relationship with Kirsi is strained as the future queen begins to assert herself and the power of her status, leaving Lucia feeling utterly alone.

Complete with original behind-the-scenes content and a bonus storyline exclusive to the book, this thrilling and suspenseful third volume includes episodes 39-51 of the greatly successful Webtoon webcomic.

Nothing Special Vol. 3 Pride and Pompousness wraps up the current story while setting up what’s next

Laurel Poppyfield, matriarch of the fairy Poppyfield family, is dying. She holds the majority of the Poppyfields’ magic, and has no heir to give it to. Or so she thought until Callie, Declan, Lasser, and Radish walked into the family estate trying to find someone to heal Declan’s wing. It turns out Declan is Laurel’s grandson and practically fairy royalty, and the timing of his arrival could not be more perfect.

Not everyone is happy about Declan’s sudden appearance, though. Leir, one of Lasser’s older brothers, has worked for years to become a trusted presence in the Poppyfield home. He was Laurel’s top choice to inherit the family’s magic before Declan showed up, and he’s not about to let his plans get ruined. It’s up to Callie, Declan, Lasser, and Radish to thwart his nefarious schemes before the Poppyfield magic falls into the wrong hands.

Nothing Special Vol. 2 Concerning Wings puts the spotlight on Declan and his Fairy Heritage

After defeating her neurotic wood nymph mother, all Callie wants to do is help her dad with his magical antique shop, tease Lasser about his newfound romance novel addiction, and—most important—spend time with her boyfriend, Declan. But when Declan’s injured fairy wing starts shooting sparks and causes him to collapse in pain, Callie decides to take matters into her own hands and find a way to heal him.

She knows where to start, at least—with her dad’s boring friend, Professor Larkspur, who in addition to serving the grossest cup of tea in history, is a fairy himself and incredibly knowledgeable about his kind. Armed with new information, Callie, Declan, Lasser, and Radish set out to find a fairy healer. But what starts as a simple four-day journey to visit a particular enclave of fairies ends up becoming a much more profound exploration of not only what Declan is, but exactly who he is to the fairies….

Nothing Special Vol.1 Through the Elder Woods kicks off a fun fantasy world

In the grand scheme of the worlds at large, Callie thinks she’s nothing special. Sure, she’s friends with the ghost of a radish and her dad owns a magical antique shop—but she’s spent her life in the human world. Her dad won’t let her join him on his collection trips in the magical realm “for her own protection,” so she’s only caught glimpses of that world through the gates of the town where her father’s store is.

On her seventeenth birthday, Callie goes home with her friend Declan to find her home in disarray and her dad missing. Signs of a struggle point to the portal to the magical realm and when there are signs, you follow them. Now it’s up to Callie, Declan, and Radish to band together and bring him home. As they face creatures good and bad, and all sorts of adventure, Callie and Declan may just find out that they are both special in their own ways after all.
