Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #5

What’s truly at the end of the rainbow? We can’t be certain, but we’re pretty sure it ain’t a pot of gold!

Up to now it’s been a peculiar, polychromatic pilgrimage for Superman: he’s lost track of time under the influence of Purple Kryptonite, grown to skyscraper size via Cobalt K, revisited his adolescence by way of Speckled K, and traveled to the fifth dimension using a “key” carved of Rainbow Rock.

Now, in this final issue, the chickens have come home to roost — and so, too, has Kal-El. Back in Metropolis, the Man of Tomorrow must stand face-to-face with the Man of Today… and decide for himself, finally, whether Lex is right: Does home hurt too much?

DC goes back to press on Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1

The first printing of Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1 is flying off shelves, and DC is headed back to press for a second printing of this hit comic book to arrive in stores on October 8. Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1 Second Printing will arrive with a recolored version of Martín Morazzo ‘s main cover for issue #1. You can read our review of the debut issue here.

Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum is by writer W. Maxwell Prince and artist Martín Morazzo, with colors by Chris O’Halloran. Prince, Morazzo and O’Halloran lend their signature blend of existential superhero fantasy/horror to the world of Superman in this new comic book series that brings the Man of Tomorrow into contact with every flavor of Kryptonite under the yellow sun. In the limited DC Black Label comic book series, four new Kryptonites have been discovered in deep space, and Superman needs to know just what, exactly, they do to him—lest the colorful rocks of his home planet fall into evil hands! With Batman at his side, this five-issue event explores the consequences of each never-before-seen variety of Kryptonite—all in the formal, and boundary-pushing fashion, that Prince, Morazzo, and O’Halloran are celebrated for.

Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #2 will publish on Wednesday, September 10. The second printing of Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1 is on Final Order Cutoff on Monday, September 15, with an on-sale date of October 8. Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1 Has Vibes of All-Star Superman

Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1

Four new Kryptonites have been discovered in deep space, and Superman needs to know just what, exactly, they do to him–lest the colorful rocks of his home planet fall into evil hands! With Batman at Superman’s side, this DC Black Label Superman event explores the consequences of each never-before-seen variety of Kryptonite. Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1 delivers a somewhat fun start evoking All-Star Superman as well as classic Superman stories that embraced the fantastical and sometimes silly.

Written by W. Maxwell Prince, Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1 introduces four new types of Kryptonite. For those who might know, there already exists different types of Kryptonite in Superman’s world with some weaking him, others making him angry, and others taking away his powers. But, what do these four types do? Superman recruits Batman to figure that out with an idea it’s best to know so they can prepare and the reality that Superman’s enemies might want get ahold of the new type of Kryptonite and use it against Superman. There’s a weird logic to Superman’s idea and reluctantly Batman goes along with the concept.

Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1 has a look and vibe of the sillier stories in Superman’s history, with the first Kryptonite messing with Superman’s perception of time. In what could be a vertigo inducing story, it’s dealt with in teases and hints as to what’s to come while also dipping into a little bit of humor.

The story and concept, so far, have a fun whimsical feel to it, not taking itself too seriously and having more fun wit the characters and concept of a story. Though the comic is DC Black Label, it so far doesn’t have the adult and more mature feel that one would expect from that imprint. Which, makes the reader ponder what might be coming that requires such a label.

Martin Morazzo handles the art with Chris O’Halloran on color and lettering by Good Old Neon. The art style reminds me again of All-Star Superman but with a bit of Howard Chaykin thrown in. The art style fits well for the story itself and in particular, Superman’s struggles are shown in his body language and facial expressions. As the initial issue he faces is difficult to really nail down, the art does a great job of showing off his issues.

Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1 is a fun start to the series. There’s something about it that clicks and feels like a fun classic feel while at the same time delivering a somewhat ominous tone for what’s to come. It’s a debut that you can sit back and enjoy and look forward to what wacky impact Kryptonite will have on Superman next.

DC announces Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum, by W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, and Chris O’Halloran

DC has announced a new five-issue DC Black Label series, Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum, by W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, and Chris O’Halloran. It comes to comic shops on August 13, 2025.

W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo and Chris O’Halloran are the team behind the award nominated series Ice Cream Man from Image Comics. The series brings the Man of Tomorrow into contact with every flavor of Kryptonite under the yellow sun. The creative team will launch an all-new limited series that reimagines Superman through a daring, genre-defying lens.

Across the five issues, Superman must look inward to find strength in his most famous weakness. Each issue explores different facets of Superman’s character, mythos, and moral core, while bending narrative form in ways only Prince, Morazzo and O’Halloran can. While Ice Cream Man became a cult favorite for its surreal, often harrowing dive into horror and existential dread, this new Superman title marks a departure—eschewing horror in favor of introspective, fun, genre-fluid storytelling.

In the upcoming comic book series, four new Kryptonites have been discovered in deep space, and Superman needs to know just what, exactly, they do to him—lest the colorful rocks of his home planet fall into evil hands! With Batman at his side, this DC Black Label Superman five-issue event explores the consequences of each never-before-seen variety of Kryptonite—all in the formal, and boundary-pushing fashion the creative team are celebrated for.

Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1 is lettered by Good Old Neon and features variant covers by Tula Lotay and Juan Ferreyra, a foil variant cover by Wes Craig, and a 1:25 variant cover by Alex Eckman-Lawn, arrives wherever comic books are sold on August 13, 2025. All covers will retail for $5.99 US.
