Kaluta Art Book CVR (not f copyFELDSTEIN: The Mad Life and Fantastic Art of Al Feldstein!

Grant Geissman (w) •  Al Feldstein (a & c)

FELDSTEIN: The MAD Life and Fantastic Art of Al Feldstein! takes a long-overdue look at the entire remarkable career of this legendary artist, writer, and editor. Both a full biography and a coffee-table art book, we begin with the earliest surviving Feldstein artwork from the High School of Music and Art, present his very earliest comic-book work, and follow his development from the 1940s Victor Fox shop (including the titillating “headlight” comics Junior, Sunny, and Meet Corliss Archer). And we examine his highly visceral work for the classic E.C. comic book line. Along with rare and previously unpublished photographs, the book pictures every E.C. Feldstein comic book cover (many placed alongside the original artwork), presents several complete E.C. stories, plus nearly every splash page and house ad Feldstein did for E.C. We trace his thirty-year career as the editor of MAD, and present his post-retirement work as a “fine” artist, including his prize-winning Western canvases and his many commissioned paintings “revisiting” his classic cover images from the 1950s. We examine every aspect of Feldstein’s long career and fascinating personal life, not all of it sweetness and light.

V-Wars

Jonathan Maberry, Nancy Holder, Yvonne Navarro, James A. Moore, Gregory Frost, John Everson,  Keith R.A. DeCandido, and Scott Nicholson (w)

A sweeping threaded narrative of the global phenomenon known as the Vampire Wars.

Mankind has been silently infected by millennia-old bacteria unknowingly exhumed by a scientific expedition in Antarctica. Now, in some rare cases, a person’s so-called “junk DNA” becomes activated, and depending on their racial and ethnic heritage they begin to manifest one of the many diverse forms of the “others” that are the true basis for the legends of supernatural creatures. These aren’t your usual vampires and werewolves—it goes much deeper than that.

Conceived by Jonathan Maberry, V WARS features stories from various “frontlines” as reported by such contributors as Nancy Holder, Yvonne Navarro, James A. Moore, Gregory Frost, John Everson, Keith R.A. DeCandido, and Scott Nicholson (as well as Maberry himself, of course).

The result is a compelling series of tales that create a unique chronicle of mankind’s response to this sudden, hidden threat to humanity.

Cartoon Monarch: Otto Soglow and the Little King

Otto Soglow (w & a & c)

A BIG BOOK FOR A LITTLE KING! A long-overdue examination of the unique pantomime cartoons of Otto Soglow, who entertained millions for more than fifty years and whose influence remains current in the works of Chris Ware, Daniel Clowes, Ivan Brunetti, and others. This compendium features hundreds of pages of Soglow’s most famous creation, The Little King–plus copious examples of his other work and a fascinating account by Jared Gardner of Soglow’s long career that ranged from the socialist magazines of the 1920s to his long association with The New Yorker, which continues to use Soglow’s art thirty-five years after his death.

Soglow began experimenting with eliminating lines that weren’t necessary while at The New Yorker, where he created The Little King in 1931. Lured by William Randolph Hearst, Soglow moved to the Sunday comic’s section with The Ambassador until his contract with The New Yorker ended in 1934. The Ambassador led the way–in more ways than one–for the King, who remained a Sunday funnies mainstay until Soglow’s death in 1975.

Much of the humor in The Little King is aimed at puncturing pomposity, and Soglow accomplishes it with drawings that are, as Brunetti points out, tightly composed, exquisitely timed, carefully structured pieces of machinery.

Otto Soglow’s process of streamlining is at the root of why his cartoons have a timeless sophistication and elegance, and continue to entice new readers and cartoonists. It’s high time for such a fitting tribute to this cartoon monarch.

IDW Reviews – Star Trek/Legion of Super-Heroes #1, HP Lovecraft: The Dunwich Horror #1, 30 Days of Night #1, Cold War #1

Star Trek/Legion of Super-Heroes #1

Star Trek/Legion of Super-Heroes #1I went into this first issue a bit skeptical.  The whole idea of a mash-up/crossover featuring the cast of Star Trek and Legion of Super-Heroes seemed silly.  I dig the Trek, but haven’t been much of a Legion fan.  So, I went into this expecting the worst.  By the time I was done, I wanted to read the second issue.

Written by Chris Roberson, the comic’s first issue sees two stories that then merge into one.  It’s not as straightforward as the Legion winds up in the Trek universe or vice-versa.  There’s much more to it and it’s laid out in a better way.  And for that well thought out plotting, the story really works.

The art is pretty decent, and I really dug the first few pages which I don’t want to spoil.  The story itself also has a throwback feel to it.  It’s not quite modern and gritty, this is a comic I might have picked up in the 70s or 80s (it’s not a bad thing).

The first issue is really all lead up.  The two groups haven’t really met each other, and instead the focus is on the circumstances where they would.  It very well could fall apart from here, but the first issue got me interested, and I went into this with a bad attitude.  So for that achievement, I have to give the series some props.

Story: 7.75 Art: 7.75 Overall: 7.75  Recommendation: Buy

HP Lovecraft: The Dunwich Horror #1

There’s two items here, a longer comic and then an illustrated story.  There’s a lot out there based on the world of H.P. Lovecraft.  The man is a godfather of modern horror.  The stories also vary greatly in quality.  This one follows an amateur group of ghost hunters who get together when one of theirs passes away.

The good is, I really dug the characters.  Their interaction is very good.  The bad is, the story itself is pretty forgettable.  It blended into one of the numerous Lovecraft based stories I’ve read or even a general horror story.  Nothing makes it stand out.  It’s not bad in any way, it’s just not memorable.  There’s a good chance this’ll read better as a trade or graphic novel once it’s completed.

The art for the comic as well as the “prose” part of it is very good.  The second part especially, which I’d expect from menton3.

Overall, there’s nothing bad about this, just nothing where I can say it’s a must buy.

Story: Joe R. Lansdale and Robert Weinberg Art: Peter Bergting and menton3 Publisher: IDW Publishing

Story: 7 Art: 8.25 Overall: 7  Recommendation: Read

30 Days of Night #1

30 Days of Night #1I’ve never read this series.  I caught a bit of the movie, but really I know nada.  That’s good, because going into this, I have no preconceived notions.  There’s two parts to the story here, a battle that’s brewing between some vampire clans and also a woman who has a website that’s investigating whether vampires exist.  The two stories together have an X-Files mashed up with Underworld feel about them.  That’s a good thing because I really enjoy both of those pieces of pop culture.

Sam Kieth’s art just adds to it.  I’ve loved his art work, it’s so unique that’s often imitated but rarely matched in it’s style and look.  Here, it just fits.  The art and story work so well together, I’m hoping this is a combo that’s here for quite a while.

Writer Steve Niles has done his job here, creating an entertaining first issue that’s good for both long time fans (there’s small items here and there I can tell they’d enjoy) and for new readers (like myself).

Story: Steve Niles Art: Sam Kieth Publisher: IDW Publishing

Story: 8.25 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.25  Recommendation: Buy

Cold War #1

Cold War #1I like politics. I like noir. I like spy stories.  Legend John Byrne has mashed all of those together in this new series that takes place during the Cold War featuring a British spy that’s part Bond and Bourne.  The comic has that spy action movie cool about it, with the first ten pages being silent relying totally on the art to tell us what’s going on.  And through those ten pages we get to learn a hell of a lot about the main character Michael Swann.

The story then focuses on a scientist that wants to defect.  Swann is thrown undercover to figure out what’s going on.  There’s a great mix of sex and action with an honest 50s/60s vibe that’s exuded by the classic Bond films.  You can just here Sean Connery reading off Swann’s dialogue.

It’s just the first issue, but there’s a throwback feel to the series that reflects the time it’s set in.  So cool and smooth, like it’s main character Michael Swann.

Official Press Release

First-Ever Star Trek® and the Legion of Super-Heroes Crossover Begins

The 23rd century and the 30th century collide in all-new series from IDW and DC Entertainment

Debut issue in stores now

Star Trek/Legion of Super-Heroes #1 cover ASan Diego, CA (October 21, 2011) – IDW Publishing and DC Entertainment proudly announced the launch of STAR TREK/LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #1, kicking off a six-issue monthly crossover adventure with the original Starship Enterprise and DC Comics’ Super Heroes. The Starship Enterprise has traveled across time and space on its five-year mission, but it is entering the DC Comics universe for the first time starting this week. STAR TREK/LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES is also the first collaboration between IDW and DC Comics’ Super Heroes.

STAR TREK/LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES tells the tale of the original crew of the Starship Enterprise, who beam down to a planet only to discover that the planet isn’t their intended destination, or even in the right universe. At the same time, a group of “Great Darkness Saga” Legionnaires inside a time sphere find themselves cast into the 23rd century, but it’s not the 23rd century as they know it, either. STAR TREK/LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES is a galaxy-spanning adventure that draws both teams together to face a menace that includes Khunds, Klingons, Borg, and other threats that aren’t quite as they should be. The egalitarian United Planets in one universe and a United Federation of Planets in another is now the Imperial Planets of Terra, a dark empire focused on war and conquest, and that’s just the beginning for this special series.

“Nothing like kicking off our first foray into DC Comics’ Super Heroes with a story that spans dimensions and centuries,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief and the lead editor on this crossover. “As a huge fan of both of these teams and the eras we’re playing with here, as well as an admirer of the talents involved with this tale, I couldn’t be happier.”

Weaving these disparate universes and characters into a dark, foreboding and mysterious saga is Eisner-nominated writer Chris Roberson (iZombie, Superman), with art byStar Trek/Legion of Super-Heroes #1 cover RIA Jeffrey and Philip Moy, both of whom have tackled the Legion and Star Trek in other forms. Phil Jimenez, will provide covers for the entire series, while each issue will also feature variant covers from classic Legion of Super-Heroes artists such as Keith Giffen, Steve Lightle, and Mike Grell, as well as IDW mainstay and Best Artist Eisner-nominee Gabriel Rodriguez (LOCKE & KEY) and others.

“It’s great to be working with IDW on this ground-breaking new comic series that combines two beloved franchises, especially considering the history Star Trek comic books have both with DC Comics and my previous imprint, WildStorm,” stated Jim Lee, co-publisher of DC Entertainment.

The STAR TREK/LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES series also offers a note of nostalgia for DC Comics and Star Trek, as that publisher produced the popular sci-fi comics under both the DC Comics banner in the ’80s and the WildStorm banner in the ’90s. Now, under IDW’s auspices, both the 23rd and the 30th centuries might never be the same after this new series is complete.

“Chris Roberson, who’s incredibly knowledgeable about both series, managed to not only weave both teams together into a clever story, but he also found a way to tie both universes together through a shared villain that fans will never expect to see,” added Ryall. “And the Moys bring a sense of dynamism and energy to not only the characters we know but also in the designs for some special merged-universe characters, too. Add to that the chance to work with guys I greatly admire on the series’ covers and you’ve really got the makings of something special here. I’m really happy that DC has been such a welcoming partner on the exciting things we’re going to do here.”
