Spotify Partners with Bookshop to Promote Book Sales

Spotify

It’s been a few years since Spotify launched their audiobooks selection and they are now teaming up with Bookshop to sell copies of those books.

Page Match is a new tool where readers can scan a page of a printed or e-book using their phone and then continue listing to that book where they left off. It also works in reverse where you can go to the page of the book after listening to resume reading.

Spotify is partnering Bookshop to promote the purchase of books on its app. Bookshop is a website that’s a network of independent bookstores. Spotify will then get part of the sales as an affiliate fee.

In transparency, we use Bookshop’s affiliate program and anyone can just sign up and take part. Bookshop has expanded its offerings from just physical copies to digital copies as well.

While all of that sounds great, Bookshop does sell comics and graphic novels and potential for more sales is a good thing, Spotify has come under scrutiny lately for running ads for ICE recruitment. That lead to boycotts of the platform and pressure to pull the ads. The recruitment ads had run since April 2025 and were on Amazon, YouTube, Hulu, Max, and other streaming services. The ads ended in late 2025 after the campaign ended and they ran their intended time period.

Spotify refused to take down the ads stating they didn’t violate the platform’s advertising policies.

The ads ran and ended before the recent executions of American citizens by ICE but they were regularly abusing individuals and violating Constitutionally protected rights and housing detained individuals in inhuman conditions while they were running.

Numerous musicians withdrew their music from the platform in protest.

Batman Comes to Podcasts with Batman Unburied from David S. Goyer

Batman Unburied

Spotify, Warner Bros., and DC have announced that acclaimed film and television writer/producer/director David S. Goyer will return to Gotham City with the new audio drama Batman Unburied. Goyer originated the story for the series and will shepherd the project as executive producer. The series is the first project from the companies’ multi-year agreement to produce and distribute an original slate of narrative scripted podcasts. Spotify will be the exclusive platform for Batman Unburied, which will be developed and produced by Goyer’s Phantom Four production company in association with Warner Bros.’ Blue Ribbon Content. Phantom Four’s Keith Levine will also serve as an executive producer alongside Goyer.

Specific details are being kept under wraps, but the series will explore the darker aspects of Bruce Wayne’s psychology.

The series is expected to debut on Spotify in 2021. Fans interested in being the first to experience DC on Spotify should click here and follow.

Batman Unburied continues Goyer’s long and highly successful association with DC television series and feature films. He is currently executive producing the upcoming Netflix/Warner Bros. Television drama series based on Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman. He previously was a writer on The Dark Knight trilogy, co-wrote Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and wrote Man of Steel, all from Warner Bros. Pictures. He also developed and executive produced Warner Horizon Scripted Television’s Krypton for SYFY and Warner Bros. Television’s Constantine for NBC, and executive produced Blue Ribbon Content/Warner Bros. Animation’s Constantine: City of Demons for CW Seed.

Archie and Spotify Team for Podcasts as Spotify Bets its Future on Original Content

Archie Spotify

Archie Comics and Spotify have signed an exclusive first-look deal to adapt the publisher’s critically acclaimed and bestselling characters and stories into multiple podcasts on the streaming platform. The anticipated slate of series will span the entire Archieverse of characters, including mainstays Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Sabrina, Josie & The Pussycats and many more and is the next part of Archie’s continued effort to expand to new audiences and story-telling mediums with its wide array of world-famous characters.

The creative team at Archie Comics will collaborate with Spotify Studios on the development of multiple series, with potential for all-ages content as well as content aimed at older audiences.

This is the latest move for Spotify who has become aggressive in acquiring new content for its digital service. The company announced that it’s partnering with Warner Bros. and DC for new podcasts. The company also cut an exclusive deal with popular podcaster Joe Rogan.

The focus on podcasts is a shift for Spotify away from music which takes the current majority of revenue the service generates. The hope is to become more like Netflix with “high-value” exclusive content.

Spotify has two tiers. A free tier allows people to listen to music with ads while a paid subscription removes those ads. Podcasts however have advertisements for both free and paid, so there’s no incentive for podcast fans to pay for a service. It’s “giving away” the high value content for the cost of listening to some ads. This has lead many to question Spotify’s focus on the segment and whether it is worth the current perceived value as a company. The company has stated that those who listen to podcasts are more likely to upgrade to premium subscriptions “over time.”

Since the Rogan announcement the company has gained $20 billion in value. Podcasts may be entertaining, but are they $20 billion worth of entertainment value? Spotify is betting its future on exactly that.

Spotify, Warner Bros., and DC Partner for New Podcasts

In a collaborative and innovative effort, Spotify, Warner Bros., and DC have announced a new multi-year deal to produce and distribute an original slate of narrative scripted podcasts, marking the first pact of its kind between the companies. Spotify is committed to an annual slate of new dramatic and comedic podcasts that Warner Bros. will develop and produce.

Under terms of the deal, Spotify will have a first look at original scripted narrative DC podcasts, including new shows based on the vast universe of premier, iconic DC characters. The initial slate of projects under the partnership will also tap into Warner Bros.’ broader collection of timeless titles for additional series. In addition to producing narratives based on existing characters and established franchises from across Warner Bros. and DC, the companies will also collaborate to create new programming from original intellectual property.

On the Warner Bros. side, the partnership will be managed through a cross-divisional effort led by Peter Girardi and Robert Steele, who will co-develop and produce the programming in collaboration with Spotify, which will be responsible for the marketing, advertising, and distribution of the shows exclusively on its platform. Girardi — Executive Vice President of Blue Ribbon Content and of Alternative Programming at Warner Bros. Animation — will serve as the creative lead, and Steele — Senior Vice President, Business Strategy and Operations, Warner Bros. Digital Networks — will spearhead strategic business aspects of the partnership for the Studio.
