Convention season has begun and up next is Seattle’s Emerald City Comicon, Dark Horse has announced not one, not two, not even three, but four variant covers for this year’s show!

The first few months of 2014 will see some of Dark Horse’s biggest launches of the year, and we have chosen to celebrate with Emerald City variants for Serenity #1, Buffy #1, Veil #1, and a very special variant of Witcher #1.

First up is Veil, the much-talked-about new, original series by Greg Rucka and Toni Fejzula. For this year’s show, Dark Horse has tapped J. H. Williams III to create the variant cover. Limited to 500 copies, Veil #1 is sure to go quickly, especially with writer Greg Rucka in attendance!

Next, we have the hotly anticipated Season 10 premiere of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with a variant coverby Season 9cover artist Phil Noto, limited to 1,000 copies. Look for interior artist Rebekah Isaacs at this year’s show!

Another one for Joss Whedon fans: Dark Horse brings Jenny Frison on for a special cover of Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #1, featuring none other than the lovely Inara! A few lucky fans may even get actress Morena Baccarin herself to sign their copies!

Last, and certainly not least, legendary artist Stan Sakai has done a special cover of the upcoming tie-in series The Witcher,a canonical entry in the world of the Witcher video games, which have collectively won over 250 awards and sold more than 5.5 million copies worldwide! All proceeds from the sale of this limited edition variant will benefit Stan and Sharon Sakai. Stan will be attending the show, in celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of his landmark series, Usagi Yojimbo!

Each variant-cover issue will cost five dollars and will be limited to ten copies per person, per day! A set quantity will be available at the show opening each day.

Review: Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #1

serenity leaves on the wind 1 coverMalcolm Reynolds’s crew shook the ’verse to its core when they laid bare the crimes against humanity undertaken by their sinister government—the Alliance. Always outlaws, Mal, a very pregnant Zoe, new pilot River Tam, and the other surviving crew members are in greater danger than ever. Meanwhile, everyone is asking the same question . . .

I was a late comer to the whole Firefly/Serenity world, having watched the television show and movie for the first time in 2013. I could see why folks rave about it, but also didn’t completely fall for it like so many. Flash forward to this series and the show and movie had got me interested enough to check this out, and I walked away fairly impressed.

The series written by Zack Whedon, with art by Georges Jeanty and executive produced by series creator Joss Whedon continues the adventures of what’s left of Mal Reynold’s crew. Broken, on the run, and figuring out their next steps, the comic transfers the tone of what’s come before pretty well. The first issue very much focuses on the question, where is Mal and his crew? We get to see what they have wrought through their revelations and are pursued by those who want Mal and his team to lead as well as those that would see them dead. There’s a solid tone throughout the first issue recognizing the solemn nature and what type of mental state the team would be under.

My only issue with the comic is the art. While it’s pretty decent, the likeness of some of the characters is off. Maybe they couldn’t be exact for legal reasons, but it’s just enough distracting that I noticed it. The art itself is good, it’s just the characters don’t look like what we’ve known. So if you nitpick, that’ll probably bother you.

Overall, the first issue is a solid start throwing us right back into the world of Firefly/Serenity. For long time fans of the series, I think you’ll be happy.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

FURIO-#1-PINUP-PerezIt’s a new week of comics and there’s a massive list of fantastic releases coming out, in monthly floppies, trade paperbacks and graphic novels! Check out below for your best bets this week!

Top Pick: Furious #1 (Dark Horse) – I’ve been looking forward to this series since I caught a glimpse of it at last years Baltimore Comic Con. The comic looks at superheroes through the lens of celebrity. Expect a review up today, and I’ll give you a hint… I liked it a lot!

Black Science #3 (Image Comics) – Image Comics’ series mixes mad science with mad humor. The writing, world, story, art, all mix together for one of the strongest debuts of a series lately.

East of West #9 (Image Comics) – An apocalyptic western, the comic takes place in an alternate United States where the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse run free. It’s everything I want in a western infused with sci-fi elements.

The Final Plague #4 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – Every issue gives me the creeps. This horror series is that good.

Miracleman #2 (Marvel) – A chance to read one of the most heralded comic series. Reprinted for a new generation to enjoy.

Revival #17 (Image Comics) – I think this zombie series might be better than that other one that gets all the notice. Focusing on the people in a quarantined town, each issue is a slowly revealed mystery.

Saga #18 (Image Comics) – Universally loved. It topped “best of” lists in 2013 and 2012. Find out why before you get too far behind.

Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #1 (Dark Horse) – The popular cult tv series returns to comics!

Superior Spider-Man #26 (Marvel) – Dan Slott starts his end game for story lines he’s been manipulating for years. One of the best superhero comics on the market.

Thief of Thieves #19 (Image Comics) – Catch this one before it hits the tv screen. An entertaining series about the world’s greatest thief.

Top Graphic Novel/Tradepaperback: Snowpiercer Vol. 1 (Titan Comics) – This graphic novel will have a movie based on it out soon. Mankind survives on a train that never stops, protecting them from bitter cold. It’s a fascinating study on class and country.
