Scarlett has fought her way to the Arashikage’s final test—a death-defying mission that could change the Clan’s fortunes. But where do Jinx’s loyalties truly lie?

Scarlett #2 delivers some solid action and turns Scarlett into even more of a badass

Scarlett #2

In order to find her missing friend Jinx, Scarlett goes undercover, deep into the belly of Clan Arashikage, to discover the truth. Scarlett #2 sees Scarlett captured and tested in solid second issue.

In the first issue of the series, Scarlett is recruited to infiltrate Clan Arashikage to figure out what’s going on with her missing friend and fellow soldier Jinx. The issue had her fighting her way in by the end surrendering in an attempt to be a part of the group.

Writer Kelly Thompson continues the interesting direction in Scarlett #2 as Scarlett is now captured. While Clan Arashikage accept her and what’s going on with Jinx? It’s an interesting story as Thompson lets things play out slowly. There’s more fights, some interesting details, but overall it makes Scarlett come off like more of a badass.

For those that read the issue, you’ll know what I’m talking about but how Scarlett frees herself is a scene of cringe, holy shit, and showing she’s tough as nails.

All of it is helped by the art of Marco Ferrari. With color by Lee Loughridge and lettering by Rus Wooton, the art is solid and interesting. There’s a sort of glee in how Scarlett is depicted. She has a fight ahead of her but she’s also enjoying it. It’s the expert combatant who’s enjoying the fight in front of them while they still kick ass. It’s very solid and entertaining delivering some badass moments that visually don’t feel like anything seen in G.I. JOE previously (though it’s not like I’ve read every issue).

Scarlett #2 is another solid issue that sets things up further for the mission and delivers action and moments that are memorable. It’s another great expansion of Skybound’s G.I. JOE universe while keeping things tight and focused.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

unOrdinary Vol. 2

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Absolute Power #1 (DC Comics) – The summer event officially kicks off as Amanda Waller goes all out against the world’s superheroes turning public opinion against them and sending her force to retrieve them.

Cartoonists Against Racism: The Secret Jewish War on Bigotry (Dark Horse) – Learn some comic history! We’re excited to dive in and discover something we didn’t know.

Conan the Barbarian #12 (Titan Comics) – The series has been fantastic sword and sorcery with lots of adventure and some fantastic art. It’s been a great blend of old and new.

Free Agents #1 (Image Comics) – The team of Kurt Busiek, Fabian Nicieza, Triona Farrell, and Stephen Mooney is enough to get us interested in this new series about survivors of a intergalactic war who are stranded on Earth and trying to live better lives.

Scarlett #2 (Skybound) – The first issue was a solid launch of the series which has Scarlett infiltrating Clan Arashikage find her friend Jinx.

Space Ghost #3 (Dynamite Entertainment) – The series has been a great mix of nostalgia while carving its own path. The series has done an amazing job of building off of what has come before delivering lots of action, some heart, and a dose of classic Space Ghost.

ThunderCats: Cheetara #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Cheetara gets the first spotlight of the newly launched series!

unOrdinary Vol. 2 (Harper Alley) – The first volume caught us surprise about a school where a seemingly normal kid unrolls but everyone has powers and abilities. This is a world where superheroes are a foreign concept and power is used for one’s gain.

Scarlett #1 kicks off with solid action and intrigue

Scarlett #1

Shana “Scarlett” O’Hara is about to take on the most dangerous black ops mission of her career: infiltrating the mysterious rising power in Japan known as Clan Arashikage. Her one lead is her former partner—Jinx—turned Arashikage enforcer. Now, Scarlett must use her very particular set of skills to survive undercover…and discover a shocking weapon that could change the balance of power on Earth. Scarlett #1 kicks off the next chapter in the lead up to the formation of G.I. JOE.

Skybound has been slowly building its Energon Universe that brings together Transformers, G.I. JOE, and more. They’ve brought a logic to each piece of the puzzle and how they fit together, making it all logical and organic. In this new take, G.I. JOE doesn’t yet exist, but a proto-version is there in the background. G.I. JOE’s part of the story primarily started in Duke, and now shifts to Scarlett, moving the spotlight to the beloved character.

Written by Kelly Thompson, Scarlett #1 gives us an interesting insight into the character as she’s sent on a mission and then completely ignores her orders and the mission parameters. We not only get to see her insubordination but also the logic behind it, giving us a character who’s in the right and will do what she thinks is right. But, Thompson takes it further, mixing in Jinx, and intertwining the two’s history and giving us a friendship. The comic creates a very interesting base concept as Scarlett is sent on a mission to bring Jinx. It gives us action, excitement, and shows us how much of a badass Scarlett is.

The art by Marco Ferrari is solid. With color by Lee Loughridge and lettering by Rus Wooton, the visuals of the comic pops. There’s solid action and small details that creates tension throughout the comic. It feels like something is going to snap at any moment. It captures the energy of the comic much like Duke‘s art matched that series’ paranoia.

Scarlett #1 is another great addition to the G.I. JOE side of the Energon Universe, giving us more insight into the world and the key characters. It also gives us a Scarlett that feels both familiar and new. She’s a badass we want to see kick ass and it’ll be great to see this version interact with a team once it all comes together.

Beyond the Pale #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day!

Bear Pirate Viking Queen #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue’s narrative didn’t go in the direction we expected and definitely kept us on our toes. That mixed absolutely stunning art has us excited to check out the second issue of the series.

Beyond the Pale #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – War correspondent Hetta Sawyer is looking into the disproportional loss of black soldiers in the Vietnam War. Leads say losses are especially high at Firebase Tartarus, with most of them simply gone missing, their fate unknown. Something sinister is happening at Tartarus, and Hetta intends to uncover the truth.

The Boy Wonder #2 (DC Comics/DC Black Label) – The first issue was fantastic with Damian Wayne contemplating what makes each Robin special. Add in some great art and it’s a fantastic read.

Falling in Love on the Path to Hell #1 (Image Comics) – Western gunslingers and samurais in one comic? Yeah, we’re intrigued.

Get Fury #2 (Marvel) – The first issue had us sucked in as we’re taken to Vietnam where Fury has been captured and Frank Castle is sent to assassinate him before the enemy gets information out of him.

Kaiju No. 8 Vol. 10 (VIZ Media) – The series has been fantastic at mixing action with some heart as it takes the kaiju concept in new and interesting directions.

Mammoth #1 (Mad Cave Studios) – Something is wrong in the deep forests of Broke Tree Valley. Something deadly. Something mammoth. We want to find out what!

My Adventures of Superman #1 (DC Comics) – Spinning out of the animated series. The comic takes place after the first season.

Profane #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Solving murders in Los Angeles is the daily bread of private detective Will Profane, but something is strange about his latest case. We’re suckers for detective stories.

Scarlett #1 (Skybound) – The first issue is fantastic and continues to build towards the eventual G.I. JOE.

Space Ghost #2 (Dynamite Entertainment) – The first issue was fantastic breathing new life into the classic franchise and getting us excited for what comes next.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Alpha #1 (IDW Publishing) – What’s the world like without the TMNT? Since their time-spanning victory over Armaggon, the Turtles have started to pursue other interests, leaving a void in New York among humans and mutants alike. Plus, see what’s coming with the new series!

Ultimates #1 (Marvel) – Marvel’s Ultimate line has been great so far. This first team takes on the greater conspiracy of the world as it picks up after the shocking events that launched the new universe.

X-Men #35 (Marvel) – Celebrate 700 issues of Uncanny X-Men as an era ends!
