Some more political comic book related news yesterday as the Minnesota GOP decided to put Neil Gaiman square in their sites. We’ll have more about it later today. While you either checked to make sure your credit card wasn’t being used by thieves (after yet another Playstation break-in) or participating in the Gaiman dust-up, here’s the news you might have missed.

Ryder on the Storm #2Ryder On the Storm #2 is an interesting comic.  It’s definitely not what I expected and instead of a noir/detective story, we get a horror series full of demons and orders bent on destroying them.  This bait and switch has been brought to us by writer David Hine and artist Wayne Nichols.

Ryder learns the truth about his heritage and Charles Monk’s mysterious Order of the Sacred Blood – and what he must do to stop the Dantons from rising to power. After discovering that a Daemon hive queen still lives beneath their city, Monk and Ryder enter the catacombs to exterminate the queen and her brood – but when Ryder takes the fight to Rebecca Danton, he learns of a terrible secret that will shed new light on the mystery of his murdered brother.

I liked the comic, I really did, but at the same time, I can’t feel deflated because of what I thought it would be.  I expected a detective series dealing with the occult, instead it’s turned into a story of secret histories, demons orders bent on protecting humanity.  It’s original with some interesting visuals, but at the same time, I can’t help but feel a bit let down.

It’s an entertaining story though, that definitely fits it’s mature readers tag.  If you like the idea of demons and people trying to stop them then definitely worth checking out, but overall, if you’ve read either the teaser or the first issue, it goes in a direction I wasn’t expecting.

Ryder on the Storm #1 Mattina CoverIn July we gave praise to the tease we received of Radical Publishing‘s Ryder on the Storm #1.  The three issue comic book written by David Hine with art by Wayne Nichols is the latest series to hop into the noir genre and it’s a welcome addition.

From the team that brought you FVZA, a new adventure brimming with elements of H.P. Lovecraft, mixed into a noir mystery.

Ryder on the Storm follows Ryder, a private eye hired by the beautiful femme fatale Katrina Petruska to investigate the horrifically bizarre suicide of her lover, Michael Hudson. Ryder’s journey to solve the case and finish Hudson’s work leads him to discover a truth more sinister and terrifying than he could ever have imagined – daemons walk among us. Now, he must team up with the last daemon hunter, Charles Monk, to take down the cabal of ancient evil controlling the city while struggling to reconcile the dark side of his own nature.

We get a more fully fleshed story than what we were shown in that tease a few months ago and it was a buy then, and it’s a definite buy now.  The characters top notch and pacing near perfect.  This first issue is fantastic in every way and not only works as a comic, but I’d love to see it on the small screen.

The world is reminicent of so much, but at the same time feels original and one I want to learn more about.  It’s very familiar, but different at the same time.  This is a world of demons and darkness, wrapped up in a detective story.

Definitely something I can get behind and looking forward to more of.

Noir is in and Ryder on the Storm written by David Hine and art by Wayne Nichols is the latest series to hop into the genre and it’s a welcome addition.  The series follows a detective who’s hired to investigate the suicide of a woman’s lover.

From the team that brought you FVZA, a special $1.00 preview comic for the upcoming 3-issue, bi-monthly, miniseries, brimming with elements of H.P. Lovecraft, mixed into a noir mystery.

Even if this issue was a few bucks it’d be a buy, but for $1 it’s a MUST buy.  The set up for the mystery and hints of supernatural ties into the story are great.  The characters top notch and pacing near perfect.  This first issue is fantastic in every way and not only works as a comic, but I’d love to see it on the small screen.

For $1 dollar, you have no excuse not to get this comic, especially since it’s such high quality.
