Shadowman #8 – Andy Diggle and Renato Guedes Dig Up ”Rag and Bone,” on Sale This October!

Valiant has released a first look at Shadowman (2018) #8, the start of an ALL-NEW STORY ARC and NEW JUMPING-ON POINT by master comic writer Andy Diggle and incendiary artist Renato Guedes!

On October 24th, Diggle and Guedes join forces once again after a prehistoric two-parter of epic proportions in Shadowman #6 and Shadowman #7, this time bringing Jack Boniface back to the present for a new threat that bears a familiar face…

As Shadowman returns to New Orleans with a revelatory new understanding of the immense abilities within himself, he won’t have long to adjust…because a war for control of the ultimate magical artifact – the bones of Master Darque, his old arch-nemesis – is about to erupt out of the underground and into the harsh view of day!

On one side: The Brethren, a society of wealthy and powerful occultists obsessed with Darque’s resurrection and ushering in a millennia-long reign of darkness. On the other: Shadowman’s old allies from The Abettors…and Darque’s own sister, Sandria, who would like nothing more than to grind her brother’s bones to dust…

Featuring covers by Tonci ZonjicKeron Grant, Ryan Bodenheim, and Ryan Lee!

Review: X-O Manowar #17

XO2017_017_COVER-A_LAROSAShackled against his will and brought forward into the homeland of his enemies, Aric of Dacia – the war-hardened Visigoth who will one day become the unstoppable X-O Manowar – is about to encounter a staggering sight: the city of Rome! Soon, Aric will discover that the capital of history’s most ruthless empire can be far more dangerous than any battlefield… And even if he survives the hidden horrors of the emperor’s dungeon, can he withstand the all-out brutality of the Coliseum?

The second of Valiant’s books this week set in Rome, X-O Manowar takes a step into the past as Matt Kindt avoids conflict with Harbinger Wars II #3 where Aric plays a rather significant role by telling a story prior to his acquisition of the armour.

Although the comic follows Aric as he fumbles his way through Rome in an almost hap hazard manner, the bulk of the issue is actually focused on the newly introduced Sabbas as we learn more about him and his story. Kindt uses Sabbas to inject some slight humour into an otherwise dour tale as ultimately the highlight of the comic for me in terms of the story is Shanhara’s narration, and the oh-so-timely reminder that history can predict the future.

Whilst I can’t say this arc is my favorite I’ve read featuring X-O Manowar, I absolutely love that Matt Kindt has written a story that implores readers to learn from the past. Given that Aric is reliving a memory in order to do just that, we can see that sometimes looking backward is a window into what will come in our future if we don’t alter our course. Obviously, we can all take our own interpretations what Kindt’s specific meaning is, whether that’s a personal or more political in nature, but the old adage remains as true for Aric of Dacia as it does you and I – “those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

Can Bloodshot rewrite “THE BOOK OF THE DEAD” to save his daughter from the darkness?

In the realm of the dead, three travelers now seek salvation. Bloodshot – a man remade as a weapon. Bloodhound – an innocent creature imbued with formidable power. And Baby Jessie – Bloodshot’s infant daughter, newly transformed in his own terrible image. Together, these three have all been damned by fate – an injustice they now seek to undo by striking a demonic pact to save Jessie’s life. But in the underworld known as the Deadside, there are few fair deals and even fewer promises fulfilled… With his weapons laid down, can Bloodshot tip the scales of life and death to save the one precious light his existence has ever offered?

Master storyteller Jeff Lemire (Black Hammer) presents a haunting and powerful turning point in the life of Valiant’s machine-made soldier for the final chapter of the “THE BOOK OF THE DEAD” – featuring fully painted artwork by Renato Guedes (X-O MANOWAR)!

Review: X-O Manowar #13

XO2017_013_COVER-A_LAROSA“This means war!

The alien-armored warrior called X-O Manowar once commanded the most formidable army the alien world of Gorin had ever known. Now, his comrades have been forsaken, his crown has been commandeered, and his power has been rejected by the very subjects he once ruled. But he still has his sword…and a never-ending furnace of fury drawn from deep within…”

If you have been reading the solicitations, then you’ll know where Aric will be heading by the end of this issue. If you haven’t, then I’m not going to tell you here. This is only relevant because X-O Manowar caps off the series first year; a year in which we have seen some phenomenal story telling in the sequential arts. It hasn’t always been consistent, some have been merely really good as opposed to great, but without a doubt I have never felt as though I wasted my money in buying these issues (yes, I did read a review copy, but I still buy the individual comics in print).

The last issue saw Aric fully embracing the sacred armour of Shanhara as his world comes crashing down around him, There is, somewhat predictably, a series of fantastic action sequences with Aric and the armour working together in a  harmony we haven’t seen this series. Ryan Bodenheim has a style that enables you to easily follow the more action heavy scenes with the speed that they’re happening within the story. You don’t need to do this, and upon absorbing the art after reading the story there will be visual queues that may have been missed the first time through. Bodenheim’s art is given a unique flavour by the colouring work of Andrew Dalhouse, and you’re often reminded that this isn’t Earth.

With X-O Manowar #13Matt Kindt finally explains why Aric left Earth in some subtle yet powerful flashbacks. I won’t reveal the details of said flashbacks because the reason is a doozy and you need to experience it without it being spoiled online. Suffice to say that a lot of the loose end and questions are answered without anything being forced or unnaturally handed to you. As the series brings a close to the current multi-part story arc, Kindt leaves us with a very complete story that stands above the vast majority of other superhero comics being published today.

X-O Manowar is a space epic with a deeply personal story about a man finding himself, and, thankfully, the final issue is a nigh on perfect cap on a great first year. We’ve had thirteen issues, four story arcs and one amazing story. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
