Deluge #4 is a great issue as the body count increases and things get more tense

The rain continues to fall, and the corridors continue to flood, bringing more monsters into the prison. The surviving guards and inmates are starting to realize, however, that the deadliest threat they are facing is themselves. If the infighting doesn’t get them, then the sins of their past will. When faced with the spectral embodiments of their crimes, some of the women would rather perish in the jaws of the evil creatures that are hunting them. Can Maggie lead one last push to find an escape before it’s too late?

Deluge #3 is straight up solid monster horror that’ll keep you guessing who’s next

The death count is rising with the water, making escape seem less and less likely. Prisoners and guards alike are trapped within Sieverville Correctional Prison for Women, and it’s becoming increasingly obvious that the rain is not the only thing coming in from outside. No one is safe from the creatures lurking in the flood, and it’s soon to be every woman for herself. Mama Bear, in particular, isn’t waiting to be rescued. She’s going to take matters into her own hands and does not care who gets in her way.

Meanwhile, Shandra has a theory as to what the monsters are and what they want, but Maggie isn’t sure what to believe as the ghosts of her guilt become more insistent.

Deluge #2 continues the tension, chaos, and guessing as the inmates deal with the unknown

The rain isn’t stopping, and the women incarcerated in the Sieverville Correctional Facility are starting to realize that no one is going to let them out, and no one is coming to rescue them either. The guards are useless to defend them against the incoming flood, and even more so when it comes to the monsters lurking in the depths.

Groups of prisoners are starting to break off on their own looking for a way out, but they can’t be sure what they will find hiding around each corner. If it’s not the deadly creatures the storm has stirred up from the muck, then it’s the muck they face every day, the ghosts they carry with them, which themselves now seem to be made real.

Deluge #1 delivers solid horror in an interesting location with a unique concept

A hard rain is falling on Sieverville Correctional Prison for Women. As the river rises and its banks overflow, the same walls that are keeping the prisoners inside the fortress-like structure are failing to keep the water out.

With that water comes something else. Something deadly.

What was once outside is now inside, and the prisoners and guards will have to find a way free, because if the water doesn’t get them, the monsters will.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 Brings a Little Tango & Cash to the franchise

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have all left New York to pursue their own interests, but there are forces gathering that will pull them back together-whether the bad guys like it or not. First up: Raphael! But why is everyone’s favorite brawler in prison?! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 kicks off a new era for the classic franchise with a start that’s very… Tango & Cash.

Written by Jason Aaron, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 is a solid start to the series that delivers something that feels different. I’m not a Turtles expert and haven’t read everything of theirs, but Aaron delivers a first issue that gives us something new and interesting. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 focuses in on Raphael who’s behind bars for reasons unknown. That mystery is teased a bit, though not fully explained, as the story plays out and the danger becomes clearer.

Good guys behind bars isn’t anything new, and a warden “in on it,” isn’t anything new either. The issue reminds me of the Stallone and Russell film Tango & Cash which had their cop characters framed and put behind bars where they went up against prisoners that wanted to kill them, crooked guards, and dispensed justice within the walls. While theres’ absolutely differences between the stories, the DNA feels like it’s shared enough that it’s hard to not see a passing resemblance between the two. Still, Aaron delivers a debut that’s entertaining and fun and most importantly wants you to come back for more.

The mystery is solid slowly being teased out as we get Raph’s thoughts about being behind bars. Other than one minor abrupt cut, the story is smooth and intriguing, sucking in the reader into a mystery that also feels familiar.

The art by Joëlle Jones elevates the issue. With color by Ronda Pattison and lettering by Shawn Lee the comic’s visuals are dynamic and striking, standing out. While I have questions about Raph’s prison uniform, the comic looks great with confining panels and visuals emphasizing Raphael’s situation and limited freedom. There’s a muted sense of colors that creates a drab look that fits perfectly for the prison setting. The visuals are near flawless with page layouts that pop and will have you linger exploring the visual storytelling and flow.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 is a hell of a debut. While I enjoy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, this first issue has me excited to read the second and see where this all goes. The team has nailed a certain sense of style and voice that feels fresh and new and most importantly has us excited to see what’s next.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 40th Anniversary Celebration is a testament of love to this epic franchise

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 40th Anniversary Celebration

One of the best IP franchises in the world is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I have never enjoyed a show as much as the initial one. My cousins and I got swept up in that world that went beyond the animation on the screen to toys and eventually film. When we heard that they were coming to the big screen, we were in the theatres for the 1st three. It’s been 40 years since their debut and IDW Publishing is celebrating with the comic one-shot, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 40th Anniversary Celebration.

It has been a few decades since I was a rabid fan. The live action movies have felt more like cash grabs than actual stalwarts in the canon. The latest animated movie gave all the old and new fans hope that they will get our heroes right. There’s been recent lows and highs but overall, the fandom endures. In this one shot guided by co-creator Kevin Eastman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 40th Anniversary Celebration features a slew of creators who pay tribute to the heroes in a half shell.

In “Mirage 1 Story,” we look at Raphael’s life as the Last Ronin through the words of Edgar Allen Poe. In “Monsters,” one boy is left traumatized by an encounter with a thug and one of the boys. In “Gang Wars,” one reporter reflects on the different news stories she has heard in 20 years about the Turtles, their friends and their enemies. In “Downtime,” the boys patrol the sewers and reflect on how much they have changed. In “Man Behind The Mask,” Raphael and April meet Casey Jones for the first time. In “What about Tomorrow,” the boys question their future. In “Splinter Forever,” Splinter reflects on his life while trapped by Shredder, only to free him and reaffirming his life choices. In “Kraang Among Us,” the boys have a dance off with a local dance crew who turns out to be Kraang Primordius. In “Farewell,” we are taken 20 years into the future, where the boys try to finagle with time travel. ”Father’s Day” sees Michaelangelo with is son visiting Splinter at his grave. In the final story ”Teen Spirit,” the boys are taken to a place between worlds called the Thin Place, where reality and dreams become entangled and the boys’ mettle get tested.

Overall, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 40th Anniversary Celebration is a testament of love to this epic franchise. The stories by the different creators are exciting and vary in both the plot, tone and style, showing who much you can do with a 40 year old franchise and celebrating the different eras. The art by the different creators are alluring and exciting, showing off the kinetic energy that TMNT brings to the page. Altogether, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 40th Anniversary Celebration is a must buy for every die hard TMNT fan.
