A New Symbiote Suit Emerges on Battleworld

In Amazing Spider-Man #252 by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz, Spider-Man returned from Secret Wars with a new black costume that was later revealed to be the alien symbiote VENOM! Now, over 40 years later, a new comic book legend begins with the debut of a symbiote costume in Battleworld #3 this November that will return the following month in Venom #252.

Battleworld, a new limited series by Christos Gage and Marcus To, kicks off in September. The series follows the tradition of both the groundbreaking original Secret Wars and the 2015 Secret Wars event by bringing various heroes from the multiverse together on a patchwork planet for an epic conflict! Last week at San Diego Comic-Con, retailers learned that In Battleworld #3, one of those chosen heroes is revealed to be an all-new alternate Venom donning a Red and Blue Spidey suit! Created by writer Jordan Morris, who made his Marvel Comics debut earlier this year in Web of Spider-Verse: New Blood #1, and artist and designer Luciano Vecchio, this mysterious new character will headline his own backup story by Morris and Jesús Saíz in Venom #252, part of Al Ewing and Paco Medina’s current run. Venom #252 will also reunite DeFalco and Frenz for a story that ties back to their classic Amazing Spider-Man issue.

In addition to Luciano Vecchio’s design sheet for the new costume, check out the main cover for Battleworld #3 by Leinil Francis Yu and a Venom Variant Cover by Phillip Tan. Plus, see new variant covers for Venom #252 by R.B. Silva and Cory Smith that homage the original covers of Secret Wars #7 and Amazing Spider-Man #252. Don’t miss the most shocking costume reveal in 40 years by preordering both issues at your local comic shop today!

Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars and Spidey’s Black Costume with new Facsimile Editions

It’s the series that defined what a comic book crossover epic could be—Jim Shooter, Mike Zeck, and Bob Layton’s Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars! Next year, Marvel marks the 40th anniversary of the pioneer crossover event by boldly re-presenting all 12 issues in their original form, ads and all! Hitting stands each month starting in January, these special facsimile editions will also be available with new variant covers and special foil variant covers!

Plus, since it’s the anniversary of Secret Wars, that means it’s also the anniversary of Spider-Man’s iconic black costume that would one day become Venom! In the same month as Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #1, Spidey donned the black costume for the first time in Roger Stern, Tom Defalco, and Ron Frenz’s Amazing Spider-Man #252. The issue took place after his return from Secret Wars and the mystery behind Spidey’s new look rattled fans for months before it was ultimately revealed later that same year in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #7. This all-time great comic issue as well as the Amazing Spider-Man issues that followed it will also get new Facsimile Editions starting in January. They’ll hit stands each month coinciding with the issues of Secret Wars just like they did back in 1984! Stay tuned in the months ahead to learn more ways Marvel Comics will honor this landmark Spider-Man moment.

The Beyonder has assembled all of the players on Battleworld – now it’s time to fight! Spider-Man and the various members of the Avengers, Fantastic Four and the X-Men have barely gotten settled in their new surroundings when an army of villains attacks – and the Beyonder’s new planet learns the true meaning of battle! But while this battalion of bad guys looks to secure an early victory, two of the Marvel Universe’s heavyweight schemers make plans of their own. What does Doctor Doom want with Galactus? Why has Magneto gone solo in a fortress of his own? And as the dust settles on the first round of the Beyonder’s secret war, who will be left standing?

Review: Mixed Race Superheroes

Mixed Race Superheroes

Ever since Barack Obama entered the court of public opinion, everything about him has been under public scrutiny. Things like where he grew up and just how intelligent he is have been regularly discussed or investigated. Even his time at Harvard and his work as a community organizer, nothing has seemed off limits, especially from his detractors. The most glaring thing that exposes most racists is his being mixed race.

Him being both Black and white, drums all those old ghosts that has made conservatives stoke Americans’ worst fears, but really is their internalized racism. For comic fans, the topic isn’t new. Readers know that this is a topic that has been explored as long as comics have exited. In the new essay collection from Rutgers University Press, Sika A. Dagbovie-Mullins and Eric L Berlatsky explore this dichotomy in Mixed Race Superheroes.

In the “Introduction”, the editors,  start off with W. Kamau Bell’s article for Wired where he talked about the hope she had for his mixed race children, citing  recent examples in Ant Man and The Wasp and Aquaman, where mixed race actors played characters of similar racial makeup. In “ Guess Who’s Coming Home”, Dagbovie Mullins explores how race has been seen throughout Spiderman’s canon in film and in comics. In “ The Ride Of Valkyrie against White Supremacy”, Mitchell talks about Tessa Thompson’s portrayal of Valkyrie onscreen, not only going against type but challenging racism within the geek community. In “Which World would you Rather Live In”, Gavaler talks about Gary Jackson’s poetry and how it formed some of the first comic book criticism whilst talking about race. In “Flash Of Two races”, Berlatsky talks about how both the comics and the TV show handled Wally West and the franchise’s larger narrative on race, incest and miscegenation. In “Let Yourself Just be whoever you are”, Collins dissects the issues of decolonial hybridity and LGBTQ possibilities in the Steven Universe franchise. In “ the Hulk and Venom”, Carter shows the parallels between the prevailing societal notion of superiority based on bloodlines, and how it is harmful , through its most extreme examples in Hulk and Venom. In “Monsters, Mutants and Mongrels”, Koenig-Woodyard, discusses the importance of character building in Monstress, and how its creators has made probably one of the best protagonist in comics in the past decade. In “Examining Otherness and the Marginal Man in DC’s Superman through Mixed-Race Studies”, Tembo discusses how using Superman to talk about mixed race can both be the perfect example and a complete fallacy. In “Talented Tensions and Revisions”, Santos delves into Miles Morales and how his double consciousness makes an even more interesting character than Peter Parker. In “They’re Two People in One Body”, Miller talk about the brave choices made, especially in reference to how mixed race was portrayed, in the television adaptation of Legion. In “Into the Spider-Verse and the Commodified (Re) Imagining of Afro-Rican Visibility”, Molina-Guzman talks about how the movie brought something refreshing to the canon. In the last essay, “Truth, Justice, and the (Ancient) Egyptian Way”, Resha talks about how the character of Doctor Fate has been portrayed and how a new wave of writers has made the hero relevant to geopolitical narrative.

Overall, Mixed Race Superheroes is an excellent book that is both entertaining and educating. The essays by the different authors are imperative, powerful and through provoking. The editing by  Dagbovie –Mullins and Berlatsky is well done. The art by the different artists is beautiful. Altogether, a book that speaks to our times and where the world is going.
