Deadpool: Badder Blood #1 is a fun debut that shows off Liefeld’s talent

Deadpool: Badder Blood #1

How many true friends does one have in a lifetime?. As friends do come and go, but there are ones with you until the end of the line. These are friends you can count on , at the drop of a hat. As they are your road dogs through thick and thin.

I have friends like that from high school. I have friends like that  through the military. I also have friends like that through past jobs.  In the debut issue of Deadpool: Badder Blood, Wade just happens to have such friends in Wolverine and Cable as he gets caught in Madripoor with Thumper, who is on rampage.

We are taken to Alaska, where Thumper has tracked down one of the scientists responsible for his creation, but thankfully Wolverine and Cable come to the rescue.  The two rescue the scientist and teleport to one of Cable’s safe houses where they meet up with Deadpool where Logan lets him know why Thumper was looking for him, and it is for far more nefarious reasons than the trio ever expected.  Deadpool heads to Madripoor where Thumper is building an army, which is why he goes to meets the island’s pirate queen, Tyger Tiger. By issue’s end,  Deadpool gets into a firefight with Thumper and runs into somewhat of a new frenemy.

Overall, Deadpool: Badder Blood #1 is a fun story that shows why Liefeld is considered one of the best in comics and has such a following. The story by Liefeld and Bowers is side splittingly funny. The art by the creative team is gorgeous. Altogether, a story that die hard Deadpool fans will enjoy.

Springing from a lost 1987 storyline by TMNT co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, The Last Ronin tells the story of a sole, shrouded Turtle in a dark possible future, undertaking a seemingly hopeless mission to obtain justice for his fallen family and friends. The kinetic layouts from Eastman, atmospheric illustrations from Esau & Isaac Escorza and Ben Bishop, thrilling script from longtime TMNT scribe Tom Waltz, and bold hues from colorist Luis Antonio Delgado instantly resonated with fans and critics alike.

Debuting in October 2020 as a quarterly periodical in a prestigious oversize format, The Last Ronin took the comic world by storm, eventually leading to over 840,000 units of the individual comic books in print, coveted New York Times best seller status with over 125,000 collections sold, and adaptations to action figures and statues. The story of The Last Ronin expands in 2023 with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin—Lost Years, a miniseries straddling Michelangelo’s past as a lone wanderer and the future where four new turtles will grow up in his shadow.

Rob Liefeld’s Ultra-Rare ‘Merc with a Mouth’ Concept Art comes to Heritage Auctions

Deadpool – also known as “The Merc with a Mouth” – was first introduced in the pages of 1990’s New Mutants No. 98 by renowned comic-book creator, writer and artist Rob Liefeld. His appearance was nothing short of a lightning strike that ignited fans’ attention and adulation like few characters ever before. Marvel Comics once said the mail they received about Deadpool was the largest response to a character in years.

Deadpool’s impact was so profound Liefeld was asked to include him in X-Force No. 1 as a trading card and full-page interior fact file, which is why the 1991 issue sold more than 5 million copies upon publication – and occasionally still sells for $100 despite the proliferation of polybagged copies. Deadpool’s popularity was so overwhelming that his scheduled return appearance was accelerated to X-Force No. 2, which sold 1.2 million copies. Liefeld focused the entire issue on his Deadpool as well as featuring him on the cover. The rest is the stuff of legend: Deadpool arrived a few months later as an action figure in the X-Force toy series, and has remained for the last three decades one of the top-selling licensed characters of all time. And that was before the movies.

If the million-selling comics are still coveted and beloved, imagine the desire for early Deadpool original art, which is ultra-rare and highly coveted.

Look no further than Heritage Auctions’ Nov. 17-18 Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction, which counts among its centerpieces two pages featuring The Birth Of Deadpool from New Mutants No. 98. Both of these extraordinary scarcities – Pages 14 and 15 from that issue – come from Liefeld’s personal art collection.

These depictions of Deadpool and Cable are the first drawings of Deadpool ever created. The only illustrations prior to this are the character sheets Liefeld created before determining his final look and getting Marvel’s approval. These pages have been stowed away in his vast collection of mini-comics and are coming to auction for the first time.

They show the process Liefeld used to conceive and flesh out Deadpool and how his creative process has always begun, from his early work on Hawk and Dove until today. Liefeld creates a mini-version of the comic book before expanding it to 11 inches by 17 inches, where he inks the final versions. He works out the storytelling, the gestures, details and rendering that are finalized on the finished boards.

Liefeld’s work on New Mutants and X-Force, done while he was still in his 20s, established him as a wunderkind in the comic-book industry. And his Deadpool has been a media powerhouse for 30 years, featured in more than a dozen best-selling Marvel video games. His appearances in cartoons are fan favorites; and his comics, especially those penned by Liefeld, are comics chart-toppers. In 2016 the long-awaited Deadpool movie starring Ryan Reynolds launched to critical acclaim and fan adoration, breaking box office records in its debut.

The sequel, Deadpool 2, followed in 2018, adding popular Liefeld creations Cable, as portrayed by Josh Brolin, and Domino, played by Zazie Beetz. The films have become a global franchise with both films grossing a combined $1.6 billion. Deadpool 3 has been announced and set for release in 2024. The film will reunite Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine with his best frienemy Reynolds’ Deadpool.

Kurt Johnstad tapped to write Rob Liefeld and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Prophet

Prophet #1

Sam Hargrave is tapped to direct and Jake Gyllenhaal is set to star in Prophet, a film based on the comic book series created by Rob Liefeld. It has now been announced that Kurt Johnstad will be writing the film.

Kurt Johnstad has adapted a few comic properties for film before. He wrote the screenplays for 300 (and 300: Rise of an Empire) and Atomic Blonde. Marc Guggenheim wrote the original script for the film. It’s unknown if Johnstad’s take is a rewrite or a tweak of that.

John Prophet first debuted in July 1992 in the pages of Youngblood #2, written and drawn by Rob Liefeld. The character became an instant hit with audiences and created a demand that he star in his own showcase series featuring art by Dan Panosian from stories and layouts by Liefeld.

The general story of Prophet revolves around a man conscripted by the Germans towards the end of World War II. He’s experimented on and given superhuman strength. He’s then buried alive after a bombing trapping him. He eventually escapes to a world that has moved on.

Prophet has had an on again off again publishing history with his first running eleven issues and a second in 1995 lasting eight issues. A one-shot was released in 2000 by Awesome Comics. In 2012 a new series launched with issue #21 and ran until 2014 with Prophet #45. In January 2016 Prophet: Earth War launched and ended after six issues in November 2016. Recently, Prophet #1 Remastered was released.

The Prophet film was originally announced in October 2021.
