Celebrating Shakespeare Day, Joe Quesada and Amazing Comics Announce Undiscover’d, A New Line of Comic Books Based on the Plays of the Bard

Timed to Shakespeare Day, legendary comic book writer, artist, and former Editor-in-Chief and Chief Creative Officer at Marvel Entertainment Joe Quesada has announced Undiscover’d, a new line of comic books co-created by Quesada and Charles Dorfman from Amazing Comics based on the timeless works of the Bard. Each title reimagines a specific Shakespeare play through a new genre and setting—while preserving the original character names and core themes. All stories will unfold in a version of our world—familiar, yet reimagined through the lens of genre, time, and imagination.

Disciple

Undiscover’d’s’ inaugural title, Disciple, will be a dramatic reimagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, co-written by Quesada and Charles Dorfman, the writer and director of Barbarians and producer of the Oscar-nominated The Lost Daughter. Dorfman will be making his comics debut with the series illustrated by Quesada and inker Wade von Grawbadger, with colorist Richard Isanove and letterer Joe CaramagnaThe comic was originally announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024.

Amazing Comics is a collaboration between Quesada, Mad Cave Studios, and European publishing house Dupuis. The three companies will work in tandem to publish and distribute titles on both sides of the Atlantic. 

Amazing Comics will feature comic books written by some of the biggest names in the entertainment and comic book industries, including: 

  • Derek Kolstad, the writer and creator of John Wick and Nobody;
  • J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of Babylon 5, co-writer of the TV series Sence8, screenwriter of Clint Eastwood’s Changeling and the MCU Thor film; 
  • Steven Paul Judd, the writer on Dark Winds and Echo television shows; 
  • Christopher Priest, legendary writer of Black Panther and Deadpool for Marvel Comics;
  • Garth Ennis, writer and co-creator of The Boys and Preacher comic books;
  • Ethan Sacks, writer of Star Wars for Marvel Comics and co-writer of the acclaimed Image Comics series A Haunted Girl; 
  • Charles Dorfman, writer and director of Barbarians, and producer of the Oscar-nominated The Lost Daughter.

Upcoming Amazing Comics will be illustrated by all-star artists, including Quesada himself, as well as:

  • Esad Ribic, artist on Marvel’s Secret Wars, Silver Surfer: Requiem, X-Men and Thor for Marvel Comics;
  • Ryan Stegman, artist on Venom, The King in Black, X-Men, Vanish, and Missionary
  • Ronan Toulhoat, artist of the immensely popular European albums Daemon and Dog Head

In 1998, the Marvel Knights line reignited the comic book industry and redefined Marvel storytelling for the 21st century. Now, over 25 years later, two of the imprint’s key creators—influential writer, artist and former Marvel Comics Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada and acclaimed writer Christopher Priest—present a new evolution of the Marvel Universe under the groundbreaking Marvel Knights banner this June in Marvel Knights: The World to Come!

Developed and almost already completed in its entirety, Marvel Knights: The World to Come is a six-issue series where Quesada and Priest combine their decades of experience crafting masterful comic book sagas to produce an entire new vision of the Marvel Universe. The story begins in Wakanda with startling developments centered around T’Challa, Storm, Shuri and more that will reverberate across the globe, changing the Marvel mythos as you know it and boldly reinventing its most legendary heroes.

Gemstone Publishing moves into publishing graphic novels starting with Kill Shakespeare

For the first time in its history Gemstone Publishing, the publisher of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, will publish graphic novels, beginning with Pulitzer Prize-Winning writer Anthony Del Col’s acclaimed series Kill ShakespeareThe publishing program begins on Free Comic Book Day, May 4, 2024 with the release of the first act of Romeo Vs. Juliet: A Kill Shakespeare Adventure. Del Col returns to the world of the Bard in this all-new story featuring the beloved star-crossed lovers which provides the ultimate twist. Kid Venom’s future in the Marvel Universe revealed in Kid Venom: Origins #1!

Readers have witnessed the epic finale of Cullen Bunn and Gerardo Sandoval’s Death of the Venomverse limited series as well as the final chapter of acclaimed manga creator Taigami’s Kid Venom story. Told across backup stories throughout the series, Kid Venom’s introductory saga was a hit with fans and it’s far from over! The new symbiote superstar will headline his very comic book this January–Kid Venom: Origins #1. The one-shot will collect all four chapters of Kid Venom’s story from Death of the Venomverse along with behind-the-scenes content including the original work that led to Taigami’s exciting journey with Marvel Comics. In addition, Kid Venom: Origins #1 will reveal Taigami’s future plans for the character as both Kintaro and his symbiote Clinter prepare to make the leap to bigger things later next year!

A Haunted Girl is grounded in a real life struggle with depression

Coming this fall from Image Comics’ imprint, Syzygy Publishing, is a gripping new four-issue horror series, A Haunted Girl. Co-written by the father-daughter team of Ethan Sacks and Naomi Sacks, with art by Marco Lorenzana, this paranormal thriller channels terrors both otherworldly as well as the real-life terror that comes with struggles of anxiety and depression. 

Cleo, a 16-year-old adopted Japanese-American whose anxiety and depression drives her to suicidal thoughts, is fresh out of the hospital and trying unsuccessfully to reintegrate back into her old life. What she doesn’t know is that her struggles are just beginning as she finds herself encountering an increasingly terrifying succession of ghosts. Is she losing her grip on reality… or is the explanation much, much worse?

The story was developed four years ago while Ethan’s daughter was hospitalized. He is now able to write the series with Naomi who describes it as “very personal” and sees Cleo as going through “a lot of the same struggles” she did.
