What final threat? The wrath of Conan and Red Sonja of course. Recognizing that the scourge of blood root has risen again, the Cimmerian and the red haired hellion go after Kal’Ang with a vengeance. But what of the Seer and his secret motivations?

Review: Red Sonja/Conan #2

RSConan02-Cov-A-BenesRed Sonja awakens after her first battle against Kal’ang and his army, trying to piece together what has just happened. The bigger question though is, why is any of this happening?

The story opens with Red Sonja waking from her unconscious state, only to find three men scavenging a pile of corpses decaying on the battle field nearby. From there, she tries to remember what has occurred through the questioning of one of the men who saw the battle from afar. The problem with the story is that, it feels like a wonderful climax to a larger tale but, not enough work has gone into character development to make the battle compelling. Kal’ang’s motivation for fighting centers on his desire to conquer the world but, we do not have enough time with the character to truly understand why. Similarly, Red Sonja and Conan have almost no interaction. Conan barely has any part to play aside from a few lines of dialogue and some brief scenes during the battle flashbacks. Sonja and Conan’s relationship grows little and there is minimal development on why they are fighting together either. With more time for characters to grow, this could have been a fantastic climax to a violent war. Instead, it feels rushed, with the battle ending only in flashbacks and the final confrontation seemingly already on the horizon.

The art works very well to accentuate all of the action and violence. The set pieces are well laid out and the battles feel chaotic. There is a sense of tension many times in these sequences where the fighting is fast and impactful. Kal’ang’s beasts look especially impressive in combat. Although, the art does have moments when it falters. There is a lack of consistency in how characters muscles are accentuated. Some are done in only in light gray shading, while others are inked in dark black. There are other issues of consistency as well. On one page, the monsters created by Kal’ang are larger than the humans they are fighting but not by much then, on the very next page, Sonja and her horse are barely as big as the foot of the very same creature.

Overall, this issue feels like it could have been a great final chapter to a larger narrative but, the build up to it was too rushed and none of the action feels like a rewarding payoff of what the series has done so far.

Red Sonja and Conan Cross Blades Once More in an All-New Crossover!

Dynamite Entertainment and Dark Horse Comics announced that Red Sonja, the fearless She-Devil with a Sword, and the legendary adventurer Conan the Barbarian will team up once again in an all-new comic book miniseries, Red Sonja / Conan. Following upon the success of the Conan / Red Sonja crossover released in January 2015, the new launch welcomes celebrated author Victor Gischler as the series writer. Red Sonja / Conan will debut this summer with a #1 issue featuring cover artwork by Alex Ross, Ed Benes, and Roberto Castro.

In Red Sonja / Conan, the crimson-tressed warrior and Hyborian berserker are reunited during an impromptu tournament of arms, a festive occasion that unexpectedly gives way to supernatural menace. The famous fantasy pair — known for their camraderie in battle, the fiery tension of an unspoken passion, and the occasional rivalry towards each other as respected peers — must unite to face a horde of demons set loose upon the land.  While the events of Red Sonja / Conan take place one year after the continuity established in the Conan / Red Sonja series of early 2015, the script has been carefully constructed to appeal to returning fans and newcomers alike.

The new Red Sonja / Conan miniseries is slated for release beginning in Summer 2015.

NYCC 2013: Red Sonja and Conan Reunite

Dynamite Entertainment and Dark Horse Comics are proud to announce the 2014 crossover of swords-and-sorcery icons Red Sonja, She-Devil with a Sword and Conan the Barbarian, a reunion that fans have asked for since their last team-up over fifteen years ago.  Two series will be published, Red Sonja/Conan and Conan/Red Sonja, by Dynamite and Dark Horse, respectively.  Acclaimed writers Gail Simone and Brian Wood are confirmed as the writers for the epic crossovers, both firmly established as valuable contributors to the Robert E. Howard fantasy mythos.

Gail Simone, current Red Sonja series writer, in a statement said:

It’s only the crossover that readers have been begging to have for over a decade: the two greatest barbarian adventurers ever created in an epic tale of blood, lust, and vengeance.  This is the kind of stuff that made me a reader in the first place, and working with Brian Wood and his amazing version of Conan?  It’s just a sword-and-sorcery dream come true.  It’s sword vs. sword, Cimmerian vs. Hyrkanian, loincloth vs. bikini, and it’ll probably be the most fun you’ll have reading a comic all year.

Brian Wood, current Conan series writer added:

Conan and Red Sonja together are a genre dream team, and I’m looking forward to not only working with Gail on the story, but creating a crossover story that is epic and huge as these things should be… and something that matters, that’s relevant, and adds something to each character’s rich history.

More information will be available in coming weeks regarding the long-awaited Red Sonja and Conan reunion event.
