Wicked slipped to second place with $80 million to lift its domestic gross to $262.4 million. Over the week, the film also gross $46.6 million internationally where it has now grossed $96.8 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $359.3 million.

Wicked shows it’s popular and conjures up a weekend box office win and beating Gladiator II in the arena

Wicked

In a weekend with two anticipated films, one was the clear winner, by a lot. Wicked took the top of the weekend box office with an estimated $114 million. The film also grossed $50.2 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $164.2 million. There’s a good chance the film will have another solid weekend with Thanksgiving coming up as it’s a film families can enjoy. But, it’s also possible the hardcore fans showed up the first weekend boosting the debut but possibly resulting in a crash. Still, those same hardcore fans will likely see the film multiple times, so there’s a good chance the movie experiences a solid second weekend.

In second place was Gladiator II. It grossed $55.5 million domestically and $165.5 million internationally, for a worldwide debut of $221 million. The original Gladiator debuted with $34.8 million in 2000 which would be about $63.8 million in today’s dollars. So, it’s better and also worse in a way.

Red One slipped to third place with a 58.6% drop after debuting in first last week. That film grossed $13.3 million to lift its domestic total to $52.9 million. Internationally, it dropped hard grossing just $14.2 million over the week after a $50 million debut. There it has now grossed $64.2 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $117.1 million after two weeks.

Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin. debuted in fourth place with $5.1 million.

Venom: The Last Dance rounded out the top five adding $4 million to its domestic total which is now $133.8 million. Internationally, it grossed $14.1 million to bring that to $322.6 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $456.4 million.

In comic film news…

Transformers One brought in around $50,000 domestically over the week. Domestically, the film has grossed $59.1 million. It remained at $69.8 million internationally. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $128.9 million. With a budget between $75-147 million, the film’s success will be debated and will rely heavily on toy sales to truly determine.

Deadpool & Wolverine grossed a little over the week but the domestic total remains at $636.7 million. Internationally, the movie gained a bit and is now at $701.2 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $1.338 billion.

My Hero Academia: You’re Next is still just over $5 million domestically. The film gained a little over the week and is now at $26.7 million internationally. Worldwide the total is $31.7 million.

Joker: Folie à Deux‘s domestic gross remained $58.3 million. Internationally the film remained at $148.1 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed just over $206.4 million.

Bocchi the Rock! Re: remained at $167,948 domestically and has grossed $3.4 million internationally for a worldwide total of $3.5 million.

The Crow‘s domestic total remained unchanged with being just under $9.3 million. Internationally, the movie gained a little and is now just over $14.7 million. The worldwide total is now just under $24 million.

Blue Lock: Episode Nagi remained at about $1.9 million domestically and remained unchanged internationally to for that total to remain steady at $12.4 million for a worldwide total of $14.3 million.

Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle remained just under $7.1 million domestically and 1nternationally it remained at $93.2 million for a worldwide gross of $100.3 million.

The week’s overall box office success…

Numbers have 44 films earning $202,361,619 from 26,805 theaters. That’s a massive increase from the previous weekend’s $69,872.305 from 32,147 theaters and 58 films. The average earning was $7,549.40 which is a big bump from the previous weekend’s $2,173.53.

Red One takes first place at the weekend box office as the holiday season films continue

Red One

Red One won the weekend box office with an estimated $34.1 million domestically and it also grossed $50 million internationally for a worldwide gross of $84.1 million. With Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans starring, it’s hard to really say if that was an opening success or not. There’s a chance the film has legs but with Wicked opening soon, expect the holiday season movie magic to quickly be sucked up and shift to that.

Venom: The Last Dance slipped to second place with an estimated $7.4 million domestically to bring that to $127.6 million after four weeks. Internationally, it added $29.1 million over the week to bring that to $308.5 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $436.1 million. It’s likely the film will end right around where 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage wound up. With a much lower opening weekend, that’s unexpected and impressive.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever held on to third place with $5.4 million domestically to bring its total to just under $20 million after two weeks.

Heretic dropped to fourth place after being in second place last week with $5.2 million. It has grossed $20.4 million domestically so far. It also grossed $2.4 million internationally over the week to bring that to a little over $5 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $25.4 million after two weeks.

The Wild Robot wrapped up the top five with $4.3 million to lift its domestic total to $137.8 million. It also grossed about $9 million over the week internationally which is now $170.7 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $308.5 million.

In comic film news…

Transformers One brought in $69,000 domestically. Domestically, the film has grossed $59 million. It remained at $69.8 million internationally. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $128.9 million. With a budget between $75-147 million, the film’s success will be debated and will rely heavily on toy sales to truly determine.

Deadpool & Wolverine grossed a little over the week to lift its total to a little over $636.7 million. Internationally, the movie remained at $701.1 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $1.338 billion.

My Hero Academia: You’re Next is still just over $5 million domestically. The film remained at $26.6 million internationally. Worldwide the total is $31.7 million.

Joker: Folie à Deux‘s domestica gross remained $58.3 million. Over the week, it grossed $1.6 million internationally where it’s doing better and has grossed $148.1 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed just under $206.4 million.

Numbers have 58 films earning $69,872.305 from 32,147 theaters. That’s a slight increase from the previous weekend’s $68,796,644 from 35,435 theaters and 62 films. The average earning was $2,173.53 which is a slight bump from the previous weekend’s $1,941.49.

Review: Red One #2

redone002This comic is noteworthy, not for the story itself, but surprisingly for the discussion in the letter column.  The story itself is interesting enough, carrying on the story of the previously introduced Soviet super-soldier masquerading as an all-American girl, but the description in the letter column is even more interesting.  After this second issue, the creative team aims to leave the series for a year, in the European style of comic producing as they say, and to collect each sequence of yearly two issues together into one trade paperback.  It is an interesting approach, though not one that would seem to be as successful in the saturated comic book market in the United States.  In terms of storytelling it also leaves some unresolved questions.

The series as before focuses on Red One as she is after the Carpenter, a megalomaniacal religious nut who is waging war on those in California who he deems to be impure due to their lifestyle choices (he mostly leads attacks against homosexuals in this issue.)  While this is an incendiary enough point for American life, both for this setting in the 1970s as well as for modern life, it also tends to not ever really make a point in relation to this villian, other than to highlight that such behavious is bad.  Equally, the series teeters on making some kind of commentary about the porn industry, either pro- or anti-, but this too mostly comes off as shooting the center without making its mind where it stands on the issue.  The overall effect is one of stereotypical caricatures.

Despite these drawbacks, the issue still manages to succeed to a degree, and in large part thanks to its main character.  While the creative team vaccillates a little in its overall message, the main character is written in a way to look past those defects, as she is an approachable character even despite her talents.  The series lacks a fcous, both in its message and (according to the letter col) in its delivery, but at the very least the creative team has managed in two issues to introduce a character that has a lot of potential for other stories to be told.

Review: Red One #1

redone-carThe medium of comics have found some fertile ground in the golden age of Hollywood.  These stories are told in a crime noir format, but also take a chance to look at Hollywood as a microcosm of society (including modern society) for a time and place that were different but not very different.  Thus series such as The Fade Out and Satellite Same have become critical successes.  While there is something nostalgic about this period, it also begs the question why other periods might not have received any attention.  With Red One, this change of focus finally takes place, across a significant change in this setting, away from crime noir and into the realm of superheroes.

The action instead focuses on the 1970s and the golden age of cinema has been replaced by the age of pornography in the era of Linda Lovelace.  The porn stars act as the destroyers of society, and the opposition to them is just as strong as it is in other sources.  While this acts as an interesting concept for a comic, this series goes a long way further.  Someone is murdering the porn stars, and furthermore this vigilante is being hailed as a hero, or even a superhero.  In a bit of an illogical non sequitur plot a Soviet super assassin, who also happens to be female, is to be sent to the USA to battle the menace that is killing the porn stars in the name of protecting American society.

If it sounds to be a bizarre premise it’s because it is, and while it seems like it wouldn’t work, it strangely works pretty fluidly.  It is the super soldier program that birthed the Black Widow combined with Boogie Night wrapped in a costume that looks like a female Evil Knievel.  The issue takes most of its content to set up the complex story, but once it gets there it starts to run smoothly, specifically in its meta-take on the superhero genre, referencing Batman and Superman in their role in the American psyche.  The concept is maybe far fetched, but the story doesn’t attempt to cover this up but rather revels in it.  Those that look a little deeper while simultaneously removing their logic cap will probably find a worthy read here.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

RedOne01_CoverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Brett

Invisible Republic #1 (Image Comics) – This new series is not what I expected at all. It follows a journalist who’s researching how an empire rose and fell. The story perspective is what really stood out to me, and out of everything I’ve read so far this week, this one beyond exceeded my expectation.

Chrononauts #1 (Image Comics) – Mark Millar and Sean Gordon Murphy do the time travel thing in this latest Millarworld release. The first issue is entertaining, but how it’ll differ from Black Science (an Image comic with a similar premise) will be key.

Frankenstein Underground #1 (Dark Horse) – The latest entry into the Mignolaverse is a fantastic read and welcome addition to one of the strongest comic universes out there.

Giant Robot Warrior Maintenance Crew (Cosmic Times) – When we get stories about giant robots and the folks who control them, it’s always an individual, or a couple of people that get all the glory. Did you know there’s a whole team within the robot that keeps it running? This hilarious series focuses on the individuals who don’t get enough credit.

Transformers #39 (IDW Publishing) – The Combiner Wars have begun, and holy crap is this first issue amazing.

Edward

Top Pick: Red One #1 (Image Comics) – This new series seems to have a lot of potential, combining a talented creative team with an interesting concept.  It seems like Evil Knievel mixed with Black Widow, all of which leads to a double cross.

Batgirl #40 (DC Comics) – The new direction of Batgirl has almost become meta- and aware of itself, but maybe rightfully so after its success.  It will be interesting to see where the creative team can take the character after their success so far.

Princess Leia #2 (Marvel) –  Some were expecting more out of this series after the success of the other new Star Wars series, but one of the Star Wars universe’s more complex but also overlooked characters deserves another look to see what happened before Hoth.

Satellite Sam #12 (Image Comics) – This series never fails to disappoint, with its intricate story and deep characters.  Revelations upon revelations show that the golden age of Hollywood was not what we thought it to be.

Silk #2 (Marvel) – Spider-Gwen gets all the fanfare, but is Silk what it should have really been?  The series is a step above its spider-rival and worth a second look.

Elana

Top Pick: Storm #9 (Marvel) – This Important X-Men Book is entering a new arc and I’m eager to see what it is. This book asks important questions about who we are in the world and how those of us with and without superpowers can empower oppressed people worldwide. It’s a topic I’d like more comics to consider since the premise of superheroes really begs that question.

Black Widow #16 (Marvel) – I have a feeling this issue is going to involve a lot of asskicking, espionage and top notch art. Because it always does. Noto puts the rest to shame. His painterly panels are very approachable for new readers who may be put off by cartoonish-ness elsewhere. The story reads like an action/suspense film right now.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #3 (Marvel) – It’s really funny. And even if I wasn’t hooked I’d still have to buy it for my husband. I love the narrative device of Doreen owning a set of Deadpool Trading cards that give background on any enemy she faces. North’s secret text below the panels joke is carried over from Adventure Time but this book has a strong sense of character all its own. I love Squirrel Girl’s attitude and I bet it would be great for kids.

Lazarus Vol. 3 Conclave TP (Image Comics) This book rocks in trades. It is the smartest dystopian sci-fi around. A comic that is doing our medium proud and a heroine who looks like she can actually kick your ass.

Loki Agent of Asgard #12 (Marvel)On our podcast we talked about Al Ewing’s writing here and how the book’s tone and Loki’s voice reminds us of his writing on Doctor Who: the 11th Doctor. You should give this comic to our friends who love Matt Smith’s Doctor Who or Hiddleston as Loki. It really is a good gateway drug! I mean comic, sorry, gateway comic (though start from issue 1).

Johnny Dellarocca (Comixstravaganza Live)

Top Pick: Silk #2 (Marvel) – we really enjoyed issue one and the pace and tone of the premiere did a great job of establishing the connection to Peter Parker, but at the same time setting it apart completely.

Avengers – Busiek and Perez Omnibus (Marvel) – FINALLY! The smaller collections have been difficult to find, so this omnibus is a welcome addition to your hardcover library. If you are a fan of “old school” super team adventures than you know Busiek and Perez’s run was legendary. They successfully resurrected this franchise from the brutal death brought in by Leifeld (and Lee’s) “Heroes Reborn” debacle. Also this is in the days when a story arc was 2-3 issues instead of the epic 12 – 24+ issue arcs of Bendis and Hickman. Busiek’s Avengers actually DID something instead of wandering around reacting.

This is the pick of the year

Frankenstein Underground #1 (Dark Horse) – It’s Mignola. It’s Frankenstein on the lamb. Do need anything else?

Princess Leia #2 (Marvel) – I’m really hoping that this continues to be strong. Vader #2 suffered a little bit, but the creative team on this is really strong! What’s great about these canon series is that we potentially see greater depth in the characters and that should enhance our appreciation of the films. So far Marvel has done s great job!

Rocketeer Complete Dave Stevens TPB (IDW Publishing) – IDW is doing a great job of breathing new, authentic life into this character and this month they are reprinting the complete Dave Steven’s series in one collection in paperback. The hardcover collection from Dark Horse us hard to find, so a TPB is welcome!
